My gran used to make loverly gooseberry jam!

lostinsunshine · 10/06/2018 20:38

Growing them - red ones and green ones. I may get 3 this year Grin. But next year.... yum

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 10/06/2018 20:42

My cousin tied herself in knots trying to make gooseberry jam for her husband. She couldn't get it to go pink like the one her late MIL had made. She resorted to using food colouring. It was very good jam though.
She didn't take it well when I told her that her MIL had probably used red gooseberries!

LapsedHumanist · 10/06/2018 20:45

YANBU.

I am scared of the dimpled end of a banana, so I can sympathise Wink

concretesieve · 10/06/2018 20:45

I remember gooseberries from the greengrocer when I was a kid a million years ago and they were hard sour green bullets. Dessert gooseberries are very different.

Igneococcus · 10/06/2018 20:47

I love them so much that I grow my own.

nocoolnamesleft · 10/06/2018 20:48

I love gooseberries.

Fucking bastard evil gooseberry sawfly, die scum, die!

useyourimagination · 10/06/2018 20:48

My grandfather grew gooseberries and my grandmother turned them into a dessert we called 'grutzer' (they were German). It was like a gooseberry fool. For that reason alone I will always look fondly upon gooseberries.

OnTopOfSpaghetti · 10/06/2018 20:50

@mikado1 I say more of a 'gzberry' Hmm

QueenOfThorns · 10/06/2018 20:51

Please don’t worry OP, they’re very much wanted here. I have to fight DH for them because he just wants to eat them straight off the bushes (weirdo), whereas I would prefer to make them into a more sophisticated dessert of some sort.

Technically they belong to him, but I managed to wrest enough from him last year to make a fool Smile

This year, I was wondering whether I could pilfer enough to make jam, but I don’t have a recipe. Anyone got a good one?

Monkee4 · 10/06/2018 20:52

All we need is someone like jamie Oliver or someone to bring out a gooseberry pasta (?) recipe or something and you won't be able to buy one for love nor money.... delia did it with cranberries for those old enough to remember!

Owlish · 10/06/2018 20:53

Love goosegogs. But to taste them at their best, you have to grow them yourself and wait until they're really, really soft and almost squishy, when they're sweet and delicious. Unripe goosies are very sad indeed, so if if you've only ever come across those, then you have every right to worry about them and you are therefore NBU.

Igneococcus · 10/06/2018 20:55

Oooh Stachelbeergruetze useyourimagination lecker

Hassled · 10/06/2018 20:56

Monkee - I do indeed remember the Great Delia-Induced Cranberry Shortage. Those were dark times.

Flucker · 10/06/2018 20:57

I ate gooseberry crumble for my dinner tonight! You are most definitely, without any shadow of a doubt, being unreasonable!

I picked the fruits yesterday 😀

Mrsmadevans · 10/06/2018 20:57

I feel the same about rhubarb op , so unloved and misunderstood

Pluckedpencil · 10/06/2018 20:57

Sparklingbrook, I love gooseberry jam, but your picture did remind me somewhat of a testicle without the scrotum. Now I like testes, but not in jam. Never in jam.

mummabeargrr · 10/06/2018 21:00

I am very fond of gooseberries.... my DM always told me I was actually found under a gooseberry bush Grin.

useyourimagination · 10/06/2018 21:01

@Igneococcus - YES! That was it. thank you so much, I can now go and make it for myself :)

Monkee4 · 10/06/2018 21:04

Dark because there was bugger all else to do then except watch Delia!

The3 · 10/06/2018 21:05

If gooseberries die out then all babies will have to be conceived by stork, rather than by gooseberry bush, which could be problematic if avian flu took hold.

My gooseberry patches are thriving. Both red and green.

Lots of recipes online useyourimagination. There is also rote Gruetze which is like the filling of an English summer pudding.

vampirethriller · 10/06/2018 21:14

I love them. They're always welcome in my house.
