To think shes going to have to continue the lie her entire life now?

So a friend of mine pretended to be a french on a night out for laughs (i wasnt there), shes actually fluent in french because she spent a few years there as a kid, but shes not french at all.

So she actually ended up getting into this guy and them swapping numbers. She really likes him but apparently there was never really a right time to stop it and be like "ok look, heres my normal voice, and im from croydon and my name isnt celine". So she ends up on a second date, still doing to accent!

Obviously now its ridiculous and the worst part is she genuinely really likes the guy - he seems to really likr her too HOWEVER he also seems to really like the french aspect so...

She's gonna have to come clean. She may get away with it if she makes light about her lie and says to him "I thought you'd sussed me out and was just playing along."
But no one's going to be too impressed by this lie and she sounds a bit of a loon.

italiancortado · 10/06/2018 10:12

For goodness sake is she 12 Hmm

Aprilshouldhavebeenmyname · 10/06/2018 10:13

What if he proposes and expects he to sing at the wedding??
His heart won't go on anymore then!

ScreamingValenta · 10/06/2018 10:13

Grin How bizarre!

She could do two things - first option take a 'boiling the frog' (no pun intended) approach. First downgrade French into being naturally bilingual/cross heritage, and then downgrade that to having lived in France for a while. The whole thing could gradually be passed off as a misunderstanding.

The second approach would be to tell him upfront.

Personally, I think if the relationship is to have any longevity, she needs to be honest with him as soon as possible. If it can't survive her not being French, it clearly isn't going anywhere.

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2018 10:14

How immature.

SandyY2K · 10/06/2018 10:14

Very immature of her. She'll have to come clean and be prepared to have him walk away.

GummyGoddess · 10/06/2018 10:15

Continue the lie and never have him meet friends or family if she thinks he would finish it. Clearly that isn't possible so she will have to tell him sooner rather than later and hope he likes her enough to look past it.

Tringley · 10/06/2018 10:16

This was a plot on Beverley Hills 90210. Back when Dylan and Kelly were dry humping on the sly, Brendan was in Paris convincing Superman that she was a real Parisian.

justanotheruser18 · 10/06/2018 10:16

Could a relationship that began on a lie really have a chance to survive? Maybe the guy will understand it was bants and she didn't intend to actually fall for him. After two dates though? I don't think I'd be able to trust the other person if they maintained a facade that long.

Slartybartfast · 10/06/2018 10:17

This plot was on something else

WetPaint4 · 10/06/2018 10:18

What's she gonna do if she bumps into someone she knows while she's out with him, slightly awkward...

Tringley · 10/06/2018 10:19

That should be Brenda being the pretend French woman. I don't remember exactly what Brandon was up to at that point but the odds are whatever it was, he was being sanctimonious.

flumpybear · 10/06/2018 10:19

This was a 'confession' on Simon Mayo before jo whiley ruined the show

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 10/06/2018 10:20

Well, I think it's funny. Grin

No advice though.

Sparklingbrook · 10/06/2018 10:20

How would she feel if he was the one pretending?

ToEarlyForDecorations · 10/06/2018 10:21

I seem to remember this story.

italiancortado · 10/06/2018 10:22

This was a 'confession' on Simon Mayo

Ah, my original reply must be incorrect. I thought it was the 'friend' who was 12, turns out its most likely the OP Wink

Slartybartfast · 10/06/2018 10:22

Confessions!
that's it!
Grin

rumbled op

LustfulInMiltonKeynes · 10/06/2018 10:22

I mean ive done this before just for laughs but not carried it on past an hour or so!

I think she was messing around and they exchanged numbers but then by text he came in so strong on the french aspect she didnt know how to backtrack.
Personally i think hes a bit of the weird one for putting so much stock in nationality

Have a listen to the podcast op, see the advice there!

LustfulInMiltonKeynes · 10/06/2018 10:25

No this isnt confessions this is real!

Its probably quite common to do this for a laugh.

I remember once in my first year at uni pretending to be australian, unfortunately thr guys mate was australian too. He was like "so where are you from?" and I was like "the bush". Grin rumbled!

That daughter of Michelle Fowler's, who was born and brought up in America, turned up on EastEnders with an American accent. A few months later, her accent was entirely British.

Mind, that was fictional...

diddl · 10/06/2018 10:28

If he only likes her for her pretend accent, what's the point?

Or do you think he knows & is wondering how long she'll carry on for?

JustHereForThePooStories · 10/06/2018 10:29

On a night out, my friend and I met two guys (who were friends), pretended to be twins, and apprentice mechanics.

All fine until she hit it off with one of the guys and had to buy a pair of overalls.

On our defense, we were 17 at the time.
