to wonder what it is about George and Amal that irritates me so much (lighthearted - a bit)

Is it their wealth? Their good looks? Their success in their high profile careers? Their lavish homes in Berkshire, Italy and somewhere in America?

Or are they smug, sanctimonious, hypocritical and annoying?

I was just pleased when watching the royal wedding with my 3 year old daughter when she asked who the beautiful lady in the yellow dress was, I didn’t have to say princess so-and-so, but “she’s a barrister!” Like me —but a lot more rock n roll—

Ohsuchaperfectday · 08/06/2018 18:09

Jesus good female role models are seriously thin on the ground.
It's wondeful to say... Look at her glamorous and takes on tough cases etc... Very bright.. Bit better thank trying to explaine why Kim karashidin is famous Confused

However its gone step too far... I don't find George attractive really I don't understand why anyone thinks he is gay or needs to marry or she does!!

He's a Hollywood film star she is stunning stylish top barrister what the hell is not to like

nogrip · 08/06/2018 19:24

I went to school with Amal

IcedPurple · 08/06/2018 19:48

They're just insufferably smug.

Before she met Clooney, she wasjust a moderately successful junior barrister, like any number of others in London. But the way she has been marketed by Clooney's PR team, you'd swear she was a female Nelson Mandela.

As for the Cloonster himself, he hasn't had a hit in years. His looks - always his main selling point - are gone and his film career is pretty much over. He's a glorified liquor salesman at this point. And he and the missus have about as much chemistry as Ken and Barbie.

So as you may already have guessed, I'm not a fan.

IcedPurple · 08/06/2018 19:55

She's a renowned human rights lawyer.

No she isn't. She has never led or won a case. She was a junior barrister of no particular acclaim until she became Clooney's beard wife. Now she seems to be very little lawyering of any sort.

TumbleTussocks · 08/06/2018 19:57

ooh what was she like? Has she had a nose job and hair extensions?

She seems like she has fallen for the celebrity life big time. They also seem to be out and about all the time at glam events in the evening as well as having day jobs, so I doubt either of them spend much time with the kids. I imagine there are 24/7 nannies.

bluetrampolines · 08/06/2018 20:05

IcedPurple

Are you really sure? She is surely a successful legal person in some sort of shape or form?

HopeClearwater · 08/06/2018 20:07

FindoGask Grin

I’m not bothered about them but I don’t like what they’ve done to that beautiful house on Sonning Eye. They’ve over-moderned it 🙁

IcedPurple · 08/06/2018 20:08

Yes, she was a reasonably successful young barrister but London is full of reasonably successful young barristers. Nothing special or remarkable about that whatsoever. Clooney's PR team has created this image of some sort of crusading 'human rights lawyer' but her career was little different from that of hundreds of others. If it was so great, would she really have pretty much abandoned it for fancy dresses?

Sortofcool · 08/06/2018 20:09

I’m with icedpurple

ifeelsoextraordinary · 08/06/2018 20:11

I like them! Although whenever I hear her described as a ‘top human rights lawyer’ it reminds me of Mark Darcy in Bridget Jones and I have images of them wearing reindeer jumpers at turkey curry buffets. I’ll bet that’s how they spend their Christmas hols.

SilverySurfer · 08/06/2018 20:12

I actually don't care about them one way or the other but am thrilled, after reading countless posts on the Royal wedding threads about how fabulous Amal looked, to find MrsJayy agrees with me that it was a horrid dress and I doubt anyone would look good in that hideous colour.

ilovegin112 · 08/06/2018 20:32

I don’t really care about them, but even I can see they are being primed to be the next jfk and Jackie bouvier (sp), the Americans love that kind of thing the glamorous couple

Viago · 08/06/2018 20:35

Post Trump I don't think they have a chance tbh.

Ediemccreedy · 08/06/2018 20:40

Come back no grip!

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/06/2018 20:44

She has never led or won a case. She was a junior barrister of no particular acclaim

Wrong. She was/is ranked in Chambers and the Legal 500.

Clooney's PR team has created this image of some sort of crusading 'human rights lawyer'

Wrong again. She IS a human rights lawyer. Glance at her profile at Doughty Street Chambers if you're unclear about her career and achievements.

IcedPurple · 08/06/2018 20:54

Wrong. She was/is ranked in Chambers and the Legal 500.

So what? That doesn't make her some sort of legal superstar.

Glance at her profile at Doughty Street Chambers if you're unclear about her career and achievements.

The same law firm which issued a press release about her engagement? Who issues press releases about an employee's private life? She's essentially a PR person for the firm, not a working barrister. She could not possibly be the latter with her social whirl. Lawyering is an extremely labour intensive job.

But maybe you can tell me about all those high-profile cases she personally led, and won?

LuMarie · 08/06/2018 20:56

I find it all very sanctimonious and disingenuous. The reputation is all PR. She was not a "human rights" specialist, her work was average (writing is poor and her speech was actually quite insulting and demeaning, about herself and other women) and no humanitarian throws around that much money on luxury.

There was a party giving him an award for being amazing according to them. Humility?

The classes she "taught" at Columbia were a bad fashion show, she's not a college professor either!

I don't think she is highlighting women's abilities, I think she has gone to far and has undermined the concept of the intelligent successful spouse by turning herself into a fashion focal point, not having the class to avoid overplaying her partner's influence. Dr Jill Biden is a college professor and continued being one whilst her husband was vice president. Michelle Obama spoke openly about being a professional woman whose career had been affected by her spouse's position and she did not mean it positively, she meant she wasn't and didn't need to be someone's wife to be successful!

wheezing · 08/06/2018 21:15

I like that she had a “proper” job and continues to have it and work on it, albeit on more high profile cases on a sort of part time basis now. It’s very sad that this fact alone has her as an outlier amongst other celebrity wives.
The “top human rights lawyer” is spin but whatever, she still had a good job and worked hard and is intelligent. All things we’d want our daughters to aim for.
I don’t like their gushing for each other. It feels a bit Tom Cruise.

LuMarie · 08/06/2018 21:17

Icedpurple is absolutely correct.

The Legal 500 is like a phone book for anyone practicing. It's also a bit like the Oscars, group self congratulations. I've read gushing descriptions about completely inept people.

Her profile pre-Clooney was very different. Human Rights is not her specialty and she was not working in the field.

She has never led and won a case. Showing up for a photo opportunity with a token shell shocked young person who has suffered terribly and exposing the person to trauma of the scrutiny is questionable.

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/06/2018 21:50

The same law firm

It's not a law firm.

The Legal 500 is like a phone book for anyone practicing

No it's not.

Amal Clooney's considerable career to date and notable cases are there for anyone to digest.

If you think that Doughty Street Chambers have false or misleading information on their website about one of their barristers, I suggest that you report them?

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 08/06/2018 22:03

She is a great wife for him if he moves into politics

I admire her intelligence and she is very attractive and elegant

Him I find disingenuous. Not Weinstein like far from it but something too nice too smooth to contrived

Never found him attractive he reminds me of action man

ChristmasTablecloth · 08/06/2018 22:11

They are the absolute embodiment of smug and sanctimonious. And there is a massive bordering on creepy age gap between them.

I couldn't believe my eyes that they were sitting up there right at the bloody front at Harry's wedding! They were closer to Harry and Meghan than Meghan's mother. Who even ARE they?

longtallwalker · 08/06/2018 22:32

Gorgeous George annoys me, advertising those plastic coffee pod
things
