to wonder what it is about George and Amal that irritates me so much (lighthearted - a bit)

Is it their wealth? Their good looks? Their success in their high profile careers? Their lavish homes in Berkshire, Italy and somewhere in America?

Or are they smug, sanctimonious, hypocritical and annoying?

I quite like Amal. Her career is just stellar. I think she looks amazing too, the only thing that gets me about her though is that she seems to want plaudits and approval for how she looks and I don’t see why she’s bothered.

I do wonder sometimes if she was the speccy academic uncool kid at school or was maybe bullied which is why she seems to have a need for public approval.

Still like her though.

He is dull.

JustGettingStarted · 08/06/2018 11:19

But if you're not gleefully and obviously in love, then the tabloids will speculate that divorce is imminent.

pigmcpigface · 08/06/2018 11:20

I think it's lovely to see someone who is intelligent and successful in her own right in the public eye as a role model for girls. It's so much more encouraging than the standard issue playmate partner.

However, I worry that her career and professional profile have taken a big hit from this marriage, and that she's now far more restricted in terms of what she can do, case-wise, including losing out on some big roles because of the potential PR impact.

Nuffaluff · 08/06/2018 11:20

Well I was going to come on here and say YABU because you’re possibly jealous, but having read the article it’s a YANBU from me.
All that gushing in public. Good god.
Get it over with on your wedding day, but after that just get on with it. Yes you love each other, he’s the most amazing man who ever lived, blah de blah.
Now I sound mean. They’re all right, but seriously who cares about their great love? Shut up about it.
Wow, I am mean.

senioritabonita · 08/06/2018 11:20

He's not gay - he had a fling with a friend of a friend and I've seen photos of them in bed together (not rude ones!) including one of his very tanned bottom Grin

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 08/06/2018 11:20

I've read before on MN that Daily Mail readers have an irrational hatred of Amal Clooney.

She's intelligent, successful and high-acheiving. I've seen her speak and found her thoughtful and impressive.

Serial123 · 08/06/2018 11:22

I think a lot of people expected her to above the celebrity thing, but she's really wholeheartedly gone for it.

Serial123 · 08/06/2018 11:22

reddressblueshoes · 08/06/2018 11:23

He was married years before he was famous, I can understand he might be bi-sexual nonetheless but I've always thought the argument he was gay seemed strange - especially as he's always laughed about it, compared to Tom Cruise and John Travolta who threaten to sue people who suggest it.

There was a period in the nineties where all his female co-stars had bets on he would be married with a kid by 50, he obviously delayed it a few years but ultimately that's what he did. Rich, famous actor who had painful divorce in his twenties spends 40s dating succession of beautiful models before settling down with smart but beautiful woman - its hardly an unusual path.

I think her career seems v over-hyped by the media (all the 'top international human rights barrister' stuff which makes it sound like she's doing things that people at her stage just don't do) but ultimately, he's always been interested in international rights and dating attractive women who he mostly seemed to date based on the fact they were attractive, the fact when he hit the age he did decide to settle down he married an attractive , intelligent woman with the same interests doesn't seem so surprising.

TumbleTussocks · 08/06/2018 11:24

i think they genuinely do love each other the Daily Mail says so but they just make just a show of it that it comes across as insincere.

And George was always so adamant that his private life was not up for discussion and then him and Amal have the showiest fuck off wedding possible - ensuring thousands of photo opportunities. and ... and they sold their wedding pics to Vogue!

It’s a perfect arrangement. If he does run for president, which I think he will, she’s given him that step up from being a Hollywood star to a powerful couple with integrity and class.

Meanwhile, the high profile he’s provided her with has seen her gain some of the most highly sought after human rights cases and she now has the freedom to take on plenty of pro bono (and of course high profile) work.

Somewhere, the beard organiser is looking very pleased with themselves after arranging this match.

WittyJack · 08/06/2018 11:25

The story on that link contained a link and photo about the 90 year old woman who was beaten up in her own bed last night.

Couldn't read the george/Amal story after that, I'm too sickened and consumed with rage about the fucking thieving disgusting subhuman waste of skin who could do such a thing AngrySadAngrySadAngry

WittyJack · 08/06/2018 11:26

(Sorry to derail!)

PoxiePoe · 08/06/2018 11:28

I think because its so much about "image". Sometimes they do look a bit like mannequins. If they could be a bit more natural it would be better.

Clooney is a Hollywood actor, I guess you can understand it a little. But his best years as a hearthrob are over.

She's just a lawyer, albeit high profile human rights cases, but that makes the self-promotion seem even a little more weird. The constant changing into a whole bunch of awful outfits at the wedding seemed very odd. Maybe they sold the photos to charity, who knows. Agree with 48b it was treated like the second coming. Maybe 'cos finally some woman finally "got him down the aisle" when he was very happy single for many years.

p.s. I bet he's drop dead gorgeous in real life.

TumbleTussocks · 08/06/2018 11:30

I think she sees it as rather her career taking a hit from the PR, she can use it to draw attention to the issues she cares about in a way she couldn’t pre-George.

She did a lot of fantastic work with Yazidi victims of IS, campaigning for the UN to investigate IS’s war crimes (ultimately successfully).

MarshaBradyo · 08/06/2018 11:32

That kiss looks so bad
Cringey but then the press could have clocked on to what everyone is saying so they pick the worst fake images on purpose

It does all look staged though, especially him, like a politician’s smile

But what’s in it for her if fake? He gets more out of it

Butterymuffin · 08/06/2018 11:34

Those human rights lawyers, eh? Total smug bastards!

I like them. Their reasons for getting married are up to them. They seem like they'd make good parents and I am happy with the idea of George in politics - look at what we've got now and President Clooney is just fine by me.

pigmcpigface · 08/06/2018 11:34

danci - she has also had to turn down some dream roles because of it. So very much swings and roundabouts.

TumbleTussocks · 08/06/2018 11:36

Human rights lawyers often represent the bad guys because, y'know, even scumbags have human rights.

OP posts:
cornishstripes · 08/06/2018 11:41

i'm not sure she's a great role model for girls - she's way too thin and peddling that myth that you can win on every single aspect of your life at all times that Americans love. Top lawyer, top husband, top mum of twins, back in her hot pants a month after popping out the twins, top glamour, always looks perfect. Most people would curl up in a ball if trying to compete at all times on all of those bases.

I don't believe that's real life, it's not one I'd want for my kids where they felt they had to be the best on every basis. She looks like a total perfectionist to me and they very rarely are very happy people.

George Clooney doesn't do owt for me, he looks like a Grandad.

eniledam · 08/06/2018 11:42

Jesus, why do you people care?! You don't know them. Let them live their lives.

Lottapianos · 08/06/2018 11:42

'I've read before on MN that Daily Mail readers have an irrational hatred of Amal Clooney. '

The DM have an irrational hatred of all women, but if you're gorgeous, talented and high achieving, you're toast (see also Meghan Markle, Victoria Beckham for example)

cornishstripes · 08/06/2018 11:43

doesn't the daily mail just hate women? I can't think of a type or category they haven't gone after.

TumbleTussocks · 08/06/2018 11:43

But what’s in it for her if fake? He gets more out of it

have you seen her haute couture wardrobe?
And the Berkshire mansion?
And she adores the attention, being on the cover of Vogue and co-hosting the Met Gala.

None of that would have happened if she'd stayed plain old Amal Alamuddin at Doughty Street Chambers.

Says TumbleTussocks who's eating a banana butty whilst waiting for the Tesco Ocado delivery to turn up.
