AIBU to want to do my own make up on wedding day?

Not a budget led decision , more like a last minute dot com issue. just not into having make up done by other people, probably because of past experiences. Decided that I don’t want a make up artist and have little over 70 days until D day.
AIBU? Should I completely reconsider this and think again ? Will I completely regret if I do it myself?
Opinions please ... thanks.

I did my own because I didn't want someone to decide I needed scouse brows and clown cheeks.

Lotsofplanetshaveanorth · 07/06/2018 19:24

I did my own - but would recommend having one of your friends able to top you up and reapply through the day

SayNoToCarrots · 07/06/2018 19:25

I looked great.

Magaggie · 07/06/2018 19:26

I did my own. I had a trial with a make-up 'artist' that left me looking like Barbara Cartland. I then went to the Bobbi Brown counter for advice but I wasn't sure. I then went to the Estée Lauder counter and they were brilliant, showed me what to do. Go for it!

Echobelly · 07/06/2018 19:26

If you're confident, DIY away - some make up artists trowel it on and make you look like someone else!

My sister did my wedding makeup - we went to Mac a few weeks before and she watched the girl there do it, then she bought the stuff for me as a present and copied it on the day, it was spot on.

Doilooklikeatourist · 07/06/2018 19:27

I did my own
And my own hair
Too much stress letting someone else decided what I look like

Gincision · 07/06/2018 19:27

I did my own. I would have preferred to wear none than be some over made up dolly bird who didn't look like me.

I did go and have makeovers at a chanel and benefit makeup counter - both cost about 15 quid redeemable against any products you buy. This was because I wanted to get some tips and make sure I looked as good as I could.

I was really happy on the day so totally go for it

Purplestorm83 · 07/06/2018 19:29

I didn’t wear makeup on my wedding day Shock so you can definitely do your own

AnneLovesGilbert · 07/06/2018 19:29

I did my own. No one know my face better than I do and I wanted to look myself, not someone else’s idea of a bride.

ItsAHardKn0ckLife1 · 07/06/2018 19:29

I decided to do my own after having a trial that made me look like an extra from the walking dead. I shit you not. She gave me wrinkles I never even had. Awful. Charged me 70 whole pounds for the privilege Shock

I went to an Estée Lauder counter instead and the lovely assistant colour matched my foundation and gave me application tips.

Good luck and congrats Flowers

I did my own. Wanted to choose how I looked and from experience make up artists usually put too much on etc! I went to Bare Minerals and booked a make up session (free) there. They showed me how to apply it etc, and I bought some of it. It was expensive but I still have some now a few years on. Practised a couple of times before wedding day and was really pleased with how it looked on the day!

QueenOfTheAndals · 07/06/2018 19:31

Apparently Kate Middleton did her own wedding makeup, so if it's good enough for the Duchess of Cambridge...

As PPs say, you can always go to a makeup counter for some tips beforehand. Perhaps somewhere like Bobbi Brown or Laura Mercier if you want a more natural look.

One thing I will say is beware of undereye concealers that claim to be "light-diffusing" as they can give you reverse panda eyes in photos!

Jammycustard · 07/06/2018 19:31

Did my own: eye liner, mascara and lipstick. Looked fine.

SgtFredColon · 07/06/2018 19:32

How is it last minute if you have over 2 months til your wedding??

I would say fine to do it yourself but i liked not having to reapply all day. You can probably do that yourself too though if you know how to do make up (I don’t).

TurnipCake · 07/06/2018 19:33

I did my own. I really enjoyed myself, I put my make up on whilst my friends and maid-of-honour/best woman got ready, it was nice to have some relaxing time to myself, and the photographer used the time to get some snaps of the dress and my friends

ScreenQueen · 07/06/2018 19:33

I did my own. I also did three other friends' wedding day make up so it can't have been too bad. Make sure you know which sun screens and powders to avoid for photography flash-back though. Mac counter gives good advice on photographic make up (studio fix foundation is excellent for this). Good luck.

mcqueencar · 07/06/2018 19:34

Did my own. Booked in a session at a Laura Mercier counter, spent about £400 on products from there & some other counters. Make up looked great, lasted & most of all I felt comfortable.

MrsExpo · 07/06/2018 19:35

I did my own. I booked a make up artist to do it but went for a trial run a couple of weeks before. He now I got home DP (now DH) said “yo7 look nice but you don’t look like you ......” so I cancelled and did my own thing. It looked fine.

kirta · 07/06/2018 19:37

I used the money I would have spent on a MUA and bought some lovely new makeup and did it myself. I just felt more myself. Plus, got to keep all my new purchases for honeymoon and beyond!

Merryoldgoat · 07/06/2018 19:40

My aunt did mine but only because she was there at the time - was planning to do my own.

However, I was just a bridesmaid and the bride paid for the bridal party to have their hair and makeup done. She was excellent. We just showed a pic of what we wanted and she did it. If I were getting married now I’d definitely have one like her.

TillyTheTiger · 07/06/2018 19:42

I did my own after seeing a few friends not looking like themselves on their wedding days with way too much dark eye makeup. I did go to a YSL counter a few weeks beforehand and got their advice on some lovely new makeup. I was so so pleased with the way it looked in the photos and don't regret doing my own at all

Babbaganoush · 07/06/2018 20:08

I didn't do my own but wish I had! It looked fine and I felt good at the time but a few months later I was a bridesmaid for my best friend and I did my own then. I really took my time over it and felt I looked better on her wedding day than my own! So if you are confident in your skills then I'd say go for it.

But just be aware that some products don't photograph well so maybe do a bit of research. And it goes without saying that a good primer is essential!

ChristinaMarlowe · 07/06/2018 21:18

I did my own. I think it's really common actually, certainly seems that way from the responses so far. It's your day, do what makes you happiest. MAC are really good (colleague had them do hers last weekend and looked gorgeous) and of course you do a run-through if you're nervous.

Petitepamplemousse · 07/06/2018 21:20

I think it is more common to do your own than the other way around. You know your face, and the make up that suits you. Go for it.

Clionba · 07/06/2018 21:23

I did my own as well. Mascara, bit of eyeliner, some light lipstick. Did my own hair and nails. Love carrotscomment above re Scouse brows!!
