AIBU to want to do my own make up on wedding day?

Not a budget led decision , more like a last minute dot com issue. just not into having make up done by other people, probably because of past experiences. Decided that I don’t want a make up artist and have little over 70 days until D day.
AIBU? Should I completely reconsider this and think again ? Will I completely regret if I do it myself?
Opinions please ... thanks.

Lord no! I think people should look like themselves on their wedding day. Buy some lovely items, have a practice and go for it. And get some setting spray so you don’t need to reapply.

Chinnyreckoning · 07/06/2018 21:25

Get someone to do it...i went to a brilliant makeup artist who listened to me. The trial was great. I looked like me only a whole lot better! I found it relaxing to go and get done... gave me something to do in the morning. I don't normally wear make up but she just gave me a very natural look.

Clionba · 07/06/2018 21:25

mcqueencar £400 on make up?? Confused I'm guessing that's a typo?

FlyingDandelionSeed · 07/06/2018 21:25

I wish I had done my own, but my mum panicked me into getting someone in to do it for me last minute and I ended up orange (ok, I exaggerate, but I looked a bit fake tan, and I didn't look like 'me' iyswim.

AllTheDressesInAllTheSizes · 07/06/2018 21:26

I had a trial with a make-up 'artist' that left me looking like Barbara Cartland

I did my own. I didn't want to look like it had been trowled on and risk looking like a clown. A friend who was a guest and staying in the hotel did my hair, she's a hairdresser.

Pixie2015 · 07/06/2018 21:29

I did my own as wanted to be incontrol and spend the time getting it exactly how I wanted it - do what you feel comfortable with x

troodiedoo · 07/06/2018 21:30

I did my own for the reasons many have said.

Melaniesunflower · 07/06/2018 21:31

I went to a makeup counter in Debenhams, got makeup done with the wedding in mind, bought said makeup, and did it myself, with a bridesmaid doing eyes

LOliver123 · 07/06/2018 21:34

I would prefer to have it done for me. With the right make up artist - looks great, lasts all day and photographs well . Plus makes for a relaxing time getting ready!

Fluffyears · 07/06/2018 21:36

Book a lesson with MAC it cost £50 and that money is redeemable against make up. The foundation andnpowderbthey use doesn’t ‘flash back’ and make you look ghost like. I got mine done as it was more relaxing any two girls camemoyt, one did my hair as i’m Utter crap at doing my hair and she did a great job and my make up was menbut just a bit better. DH loved how I looked.

happymummy12345 · 07/06/2018 21:36

If you're confident then go for it. Why not.
I never wear makeup and didn't on my wedding day, so I can't offer any advice further than that really.

MrsHathaway · 07/06/2018 21:36

I did my own and I'm confident it looked fine on the day ... but it looks like nothing at all in the photos in bright sunlight. I sort of wish I'd known that so I could have done Me But More.

PlumsInTheIcebox · 07/06/2018 21:39

Of course £400 isn’t a typo. A full kit of high-end makeup could easily cost that, and then some.

YANBU, OP. I did my own too, but did have a few sessions at MAC counters to find what worked. Make sure that there is no SPF in your moisturiser or foundation and go verrrry easy on any Touche Éclat style highlighters, or you will look very weird in any flash photos.

dementedma · 07/06/2018 21:44

when I got married (30 years ago) i dont think it was even a thing to have someone do your make up. I just did my normal makeup. Look ok in the photos I think..

Clionba · 07/06/2018 21:48

PlumsInTheIceBox I genuinely did not know that as I don't wear make up other than mascara and lippy. Not judgemental at all, I really had no idea.

DesignedForLife · 07/06/2018 21:57

I did my own after I had a trial that left me looking like a drag queen.

AllTheDressesInAllTheSizes · 07/06/2018 21:58

I remember reading a Jackie Magazine article in the 1970s as a kid, 'Your 50p Face' - eye shadow, mascara, lipstick. It always stuck with me.

These days it's 50p a square millimetre on primer.

Oh Waw... lovely... so many amazing ladies here... I was called (out of order by a “friend” ) ... This has really opened my eyes... I’m comfortable doing my make up, I hardly ever wear any on a daily basis ... (probably need to) but I grew out of the excitement of looking camera ready at 8am specially with 2 kids. My photographer wasn’t one of the people who were like “oh no honey , if your make up isn’t right your pics will look awful”
Thanks a lot ladies ... this has given me a whole new perspective 💕💕🙏

out of order? either slap her or ask her if the groom should also be made up.

dont get this at all. if you wear makeup you must know what to do with it. dont frighten the groom with a professional job.

JessyJames · 07/06/2018 22:04

I did my own. I did splash out on a new lipstick!

BigPinkBall · 07/06/2018 22:05

I did my own, I always go for a very natural look anyway. I went to the MAC counter and the makeup artist there had recently been in a wedding magazine as a model, he gave me some tips and I got some new makeup as I didn’t want to be using clumpy old mascara on the big day. I practiced beforehand and took photos of myself in different kinds of light to make sure I’d look ok in the photos.

EffRam · 07/06/2018 22:06

I did my own. I spent the money I would have spent on new products that I'm still enjoying seven months later. I really enjoyed getting ready with my sister (also doing her own!) I wanted to look like me.

MuvaWifey77 · 07/06/2018 22:11

That’s exactly what I’m panning on doing... spending some money (not £400, although yes , I know make up and brushes can cost a lot more than that) but since I’m not too big on make up it will be a waste to spend so much... so will get some nice brushes , already have a primer (porefessional from benefit :) and have foundation , my favourite lipstick (the only one I ever use lol ) ...
People seem to be into highlighting and setting powder (this I know nothing about) so probably best to book a makeup appointment at Harvey Nichols and enjoy my day...
The more I think about it , the more I believe doing “me” , being myself it’s the best approach ... and yes, if it’s good enough for Kate Middleton it’s good enough for me ! :)
