To think a lot of left wing people are actually close minded?

DeepFatFriar · 07/06/2018 18:10

Close minded as in not receptive to other peoples views.

Disclaimer: i consider myself left wing.

But at the same time, I'm quite happy to have a talk with someone down the pub who might be anti immigration or anti abortion. As long as they've thought their point out properly, im open to debate and i dont feell offended by their views.
But it feels like a lot of the left wing people i come across just go into "racist twat! Fucking tory!" mode- like theyre incapable of seeing that situations are often a bit more complex than just this is right/thats wrong.

For example with Brexit, i voted remain and was gutted by the result - at the same time, i felt a bit irritated by fellow remainers "theyre all little englander tory twats" attitude to brexiters. Yeah, some of them are. Others just have a different POV, you know?

I was discussing this with my mum and she said back in her day (im assuming this means the 70s!) "conversation felt more nuanced".

It sometimes feels like a lot of left wing people just want to live in an echo chamber. I think you need to try and keep an open mind to different points of view. You clearly dont have to agree. But you can at least accept that people have different mindsets because they've had different experiences - it doesnt make them a worse person though.

So because of them, you think Labour voters are rude, racist homophobes. Right.

Because of Anne Widdecombe I think that all Tory voters think women in prison should give birth shackled hand and foot to a bed. Because of my step fil I think all Tory voters think burglars should have their right hand chopped off, the birch should be reintroduced to secondary schools and that Grenfell Tower was caused by illegal immigrants and good riddance.

But what really pisses me off are those lefties who have never seen poverty, never had to make a difficult choice about food/heat/electricity who claim to be on the side of the working class/those on benefits, but then come out with patronising statements. Often insinuating that these folk don’t know what’s best for them and we should ignore their views i.e. Brexit.

Captain having been in the whole difficult choice camp I do understand what a shit place it is to be. I wouldn't have trusted a Eton educated person of immense privilege to have my best interests at heart though, call me cynical Grin

qwertyuiopy · 10/06/2018 08:35

BertrandRussell Not biting. I don’t with my ILs either.

frumpety · 10/06/2018 08:36

Hah ! just realised that the final part of that statement applies to both Johnson and Cameron Smile

frumpety · 10/06/2018 08:55

qwerty surely you don't believe that every single person who has voted Labour at any point, holds the same views as your delightful IL's ?

qwertyuiopy · 10/06/2018 08:56

frumpety I haven’t met every single Labour voter.

frumpety · 10/06/2018 08:57

What about all those people who voted for Labour back in 1997 qwerty

frumpety · 10/06/2018 08:59

Depending on where you live you might struggle to find one , my village only has a handful Wink

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 09:02

frumpety I wasn’t in the U.K. in 1997. Was that a general election?

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 09:04

Googled it, yes it was. Why would people have met those Labour voters?

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 09:09

"Googled it, yes it was. Why would people have met those Labour voters?"
Well, there were quite a lot of them. It would have been hard not to have met a few......

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 09:11

Right. Well not everyone was living in the U.K. then that is living here now!

Why did people turn against them?

BertrandRussell · 10/06/2018 09:14

There are still a lot of labour voters, you know! The current government is only there by the skin of it's teeth....

Ohsuchaperfectday · 10/06/2018 09:14

And chuka umuna is the voice of the totally shafted working class voter.... Right Confused.

It little matters how rich and privaliged you are. What matters is humanity, understanding.. Empathy... Grasping issues.

I have no idea for instance if Frank field has a working class background or is from a the wealthiest and most privaliged family on earth.
What I do care about is that he grasps and understands and reports facts from what's happened in his ward of Birkenhead.
What he hasn't done is lie and pretend something is not happening because it doesn't fit with his beliefs.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 10/06/2018 09:16

^^ having said that.. Obviously variety is always best and its not healthy to draw on one source ie eton for all our leaders.

Ohsuchaperfectday · 10/06/2018 09:18

I voted for Labour back in 1997, I will not be voting Labour again for a long time I had my fingers burned and a huge political awakening.... So that's one labour voters story..

sacredgeometry · 10/06/2018 09:21

Ive seen this from both sides, the right labelling left wingers "libtards" etc Its very tribalistic. I do have to say the most venomous attacks I've seen come from the left, particularly on my MPs social media page ! He swung a 19000 left wing majority to a 6000 conservative majority in Scotland (no mean feat) at the last election and it seems he cannot do right !

I like a good debate and fall on different sides depending on the issue at hand. Bit i see the left as more firmly rooted in ideology.

I will give you an example I am right of centre and both myself and some of my more "right wing" friends would not seek to abolish the right to abortion or the rights of gay people to be married. My left wing friends (to most of them i cannot come out as a Tory as they would disown me !) are far less nuanced in their political outlook.

Many many people think FF lies:

I do wonder who benefits if the country is divided ? Or is it really , perhaps it isn't , perhaps it appears to be more divided because as a previous poster pointed out , social media and what people say online doesn't translate to who they are or how they behave in real life ?

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 09:46

In what way frumpety?

ohgohome · 10/06/2018 09:49

Do you mean people are saying one thing on social media and another in real life? Pretending to be something they’re not? Why would people do that? What are their real views and why are they hiding them?

I know two teachers who say they are labour supporters but send their children to private school. One of them works in that school. They admit the hypocrisy but say it’s different when it is their own children! But every child is someone’s own child!

YANBU.

frumpety · 10/06/2018 10:35

Sorry home , I meant people might be a bit more lairy online than in real life.

lindalee3 · 10/06/2018 10:38

@mrsmurphy86

YANBU when it comes to the 'far left.'

They are some of the most closed-minded, bigoted, judgemental people I know. They think only they are correct about everything, only they are intelligent and knowledgeable, and that anyone right of centre or right wing (or who voted for Brexit!) is a thick racist bigot.

They scream at you if you use terminology that doesn't suit them (to describe a person of colour for example,) and the female ones I know are all staunch feminists and get incredibly angry if other females don't measure up to their idea of what a feminist should be. (Eg, why have you taken your husband's name, why doesn't HE stay home with the kids? Why are you losing weight for HIM? Never mind that the woman in question is happy to do what she is doing; it's a disgrace that she would do anything to please a MAN! Hmm

I never ever see right wing, or people right-of-centre attacking left wing and calling them names, and mocking them. Yet the 'far left wing' are hugely vitriolic and very vicious. The far left really are the worst kind of people. I actually cannot stand them and actively avoid and ignore them.
