To think she's wrong, not me

Bought a pair of jeans from Ebay, advertised as a size 24. They arrived today and they're a 24 inch waist which is no use to me. The ad never once says they're anything but a size 24. Seller is refusing to refund.

I think the item is as described though? It's a tricky one because it could be deceiving, but the listing says size 24 as does the label :/

ScreamingValenta · 08/06/2018 09:13

If you look at other listings for 7 for all Mankind jeans, they seem to say 'W24' or 'Waist 24' rather than 'size 24'.

FriendlyOcelot · 08/06/2018 09:15

Branded jeans are nearly always sold in waist size. I have sold jeans on eBay as size 26 or 27 and never had any issues. I would never have assumed a pair of 24 7FAMs as an actual dress size 24, always the waist size! Sorry op but I think you’re in the wrong here.

FriendlyOcelot · 08/06/2018 09:20

If you go on NAP or any other online retailer that sells branded jeans it would be the same sizing. This eBay seller is doing nothing different.

Yes but if you put waist 24 you could be seen as claiming that the measurement around the waistband, if you were to get a tape measure out and measure them, is actually 24” when often it isn’t that at all (especially if they are a below waist fit). That would open up another potential issue. It’s far safer just to put them as size ‘whatever it says on the label’ and let the buyer work it out. Risks of buying online I’m afraid!

QuestionableMouse · 08/06/2018 09:20

They came up when I searched size 24 jeans, say size 24 more than once yet clearly aren't. Imo in the UK the expectation is that clothes are sold by the dress size unless otherwise stated.

I don’t think you’re going to have much luck with returns, the seller hasn’t tried to deceive you the information she has on the listing is correct plus accurate photos, but you bought something from a brand you don’t know and you didn’t check their sizing, you should have done your research. Jeans from more expensive brands tend to give waist size rather than size 8/10/12 or whatever, and 7 for all mankind doesn’t go up to a size 24. Even Topshop sell women’s jeans in a waist size and leg length now so W25L32 or whatever. I think it was a silly mistake on your part OP, but they will be easy enough to sell on again.

19lottie82 · 08/06/2018 09:24

I can understand why you might think trouser size = size 24, but I think that’s the way ebay actually words it as 24 = 24” waist, when you set up the listing.

The seller has also hasn’t worded it very well in her description.

Is the seller originally from the U.K.? The way she has described the sizing sounds very European.

I don’t think YABU to request a return.
There’s no point in communicating with the seller further, just open an official request with eBay. They will approve it no problem.

However, looking at those photos, surely it’s clear that those trousers aren’t an actual size 24?!

19lottie82 · 08/06/2018 09:25

i don’t think you’re going to have much luck with returns

I disagree. Just open a returns request and it will be approved.

ShinyShooney · 08/06/2018 09:26

You must be a bit dim to mistake size 8 jeans for size 24. Did you not even look at the pictures?

Also 7 for all mankind definitely don't do plus size. Odd to buy 2nd hand jeans online from a brand you've never heard of!

whifflesqueak · 08/06/2018 09:30

It’s not “dim” or “odd” Shiny. How rude.

RedPony1 · 08/06/2018 09:33

surely anyone knows that 7 for all Mankind don't go up to that kind of size?

I've never heard of that brand name until this post so i wouldn't have had a clue!

You'll get a refund, the description itself reads as a Size 24 which is misleading.

It's certainly not odd to buy second hand jeans of a brand she hasn't heard of either Shiny that's just rude! I don't shop by brand, i shop by what i like the look of. I have zero brand loyalty to any company.

amusedbush · 08/06/2018 09:36

I wear Topshop jeans and they go by waist size but if you're not used to shopping for certain brands and something comes up as "size 24" I can see why you would assume it meant dress size.

MarthasGinYard · 08/06/2018 09:40

'They came up when I searched size 24 jeans,'

Because they are

I think out of goodwill you may get a refund but I don't think it's sellers fault.

I'm selling a pair of Jeans on EBay at the moment by waist size. Never occurred to me that someone might think they are a dress size 30

Clandestino · 08/06/2018 09:40

I'd assume they're size 24 too. I'm 24 or 25 inch waist and I would never assume these would be jeans for me. 24/25 inch would be the equivalent of size 6/32 (depends on the cut as e.g. Diesel 25 inch waist tends to be on the smaller size).

FizzyGreenWater · 08/06/2018 09:47

It doesn't matter how 'likely' the misinterpretation is.

The point is - it's possible to misinterpret, and you did. It's a genuine reason to ask for a refund and that will be that as far as ebay is concerned tbh. You don't have to have some cast-iron stand up in court proof of likelihood. You don't even have to contact her again, just open the case and you'll be refunded.

SuburbanRhonda · 08/06/2018 09:48

There are some really snidey comments on here about people who wear plus-size clothes.

A good seller would have included waist and inside leg measurements in their listing description so there would absolutely no confusion.

Failingat40 · 08/06/2018 09:48

Umm jeans are often sold by waist inches, young girls will look for 'size 24/26' jeans (inch waist)

When you type that size into eBay loads come up.

Size uk 24 is not 'mainstream' and most people who are into fashion wouldn't even be aware this size can exist.

The photo she's listed is clearly not a pair of oversized jeans, I would have thought you'd have realised by picture 4 you'd misinterpreted the advert.

I managed to find one pair of uk size 24 jeans amongst all the teeny 24" jeans and the difference is rather obvious op Grin

I think you should return them for a refund and split the difference on postage, fault on both sides I think.

To think she's wrong, not me
Sweatymoose · 08/06/2018 09:52

Definitely listed as size 24 - 24 waist should be 24W. Buyer always wins with ebay anyway

GabsAlot · 08/06/2018 09:52

it wasnt clear simple as that you'll get a refund but do send them back

Branleuse · 08/06/2018 10:02

id think it was ambiguous, but on that advert, since the photos look like a small pair of jeans, id have had to double check with the seller, but I do think its a massive issue on ebay with things being sized wrongly or ambiguously. Ive bought so much stuff thats been not as described or sized wrongly, or sized for the asian market without mentioning this - just bought a bikini in a Large as a UK 10-12 according to their own size chart, and it looks like it would fit my 10 year old.
Only got a partial refund too, so im going to do a negative review

19lottie82 · 08/06/2018 10:05

on both sides I think.

Ebay doesn’t really work like that.

You have to open an official return request to avoid being messed about by the buyer / keep everything by the book, and they will then change the seller for a pre paid returns label.

19lottie82 · 08/06/2018 10:07

From China I expect?

Only got a partial refund too

Why? As long as you opened a returns request within 30 days of the latest delivery estimate date, eBay won’t force a partial refund (you have to agree to accept one), only a full one.

ScreamingValenta · 08/06/2018 10:10

'Small, medium and large' is hopeless unless you know the brand or seller has provided measurements.

Jaxhog · 08/06/2018 10:20

I would have assumed size 24 as well. Not 24" waist. Although I do usually ask for the waist size when buying stuff.

I would expect ebay to get you a refund.

RedPony1 · 08/06/2018 10:25

Umm jeans are often sold by waist inches

This may be the case, but i have never ever bought a pair of jeans or trousers by waist inches! Never bought from any shops that do that clearly.
