To think people are just not aware of how much of their lives are visible on the internet

...unless you do something about it! Long story short my DH and I have been harrsssed by someone recently who we met through a club, ie always in our face, getting aggressive if we ignored him etc. He seemed a bit obsessed with us tbh. Anyway I decided to do some digging on him! All I knew was his first and second names and the county he lived in. In one hour I was able to find his address, the name and addresses of his parents, what they did for jobs, the name of his dead brother, what he had died of, how long from diagnosis to death, name and address of sister in law and he kids, where they go to school, who their friends are, make an educated guess he’s NC with his family and when this happened as well as the dads relationship with his dead son. Obviously I’m not going to do anything with this (unless I finally persuade DH to go to the police if weirdo bloke oversteps the mark). I just wanted a bit more background on who we were dealing with. I google myself every so often to see what info is publically available and get anything I don’t want removed! Am I just paranoid? Or are people being unreasonably lax about their internet foot print?

Totally agree, but not all of it may be on the part of the individual. If you do an address search on 118 118 ( or similar) it will come up with addresses for that name all over the country. This information comes from the electoral roll. Births, deaths and marriage indexes are also fully searchable.

I did have similar recently with an eBay seller. I logged into PayPal to check if she’d refunded me. She hadn’t, but PayPal obligingly gave me her name. I put that into Facebook and I know now what she looks like, what her kids look like and where she works. I could easily have found out her address.

I could have contacted her employer to ask if they knew that their employee who works in their finance office was taking money from buyers and not sending items....

But I’m not like that, and I calmly waited the additional week for eBay to refund me.

SCary though.
