Am I being unreasonable to go to my gp with this?

Sorry, posting mainly for traffic. I’m in agony with cystitis, literally crying with the pain! I know it’s cystitus as I’ve had it before and often use the over the counter remedies but this time they aren’t working. Is there any point in seeing my gp or is there nothing they can do? It’s been 2 days now. I’m drinking loads of water and dh is going to get me some cranberry juice.

Go! It might be a water infection

halfwitpicker · 07/06/2018 13:08

Go to the docs.

YANBU.

rachelgrassby · 07/06/2018 13:09

YANBU. I've had the same and was put on antibiotics. Mine didn't clear up but that's beside the point. Hope they work for you!

Eggoispreggo · 07/06/2018 13:09

Definitely go, if over the counter stuff isn't helping they should give you antibiotics to get rid of it.
I've been a couple of time to the GP for this exact reason when cranberry juice didn't cut it. Once I had it so badly I had to see an out of hours dr, so you're definitely not being silly to want to see someone.
Hope you can get an appointment soon and they sort you out :)

Heismyopendoor · 07/06/2018 13:10

Of course YANBU

At the risk of coming across rude, you are not a gp (I assume!) so you don’t know it’s cystitis. Go and get checked out

Canwejustrelaxnow · 07/06/2018 13:12

You need antibiotics. Only available on prescription. It won't get better by itself if it's gone this far.

Canwejustrelaxnow · 07/06/2018 13:12

I'd go to walk in centre.

Canwejustrelaxnow · 07/06/2018 13:13

Unless your gp will allow you to collect a prescription without seeing you. Mine does.

DragonsAndCakes · 07/06/2018 13:14

I think latest advice is that cranberry prevents rather than treats. I’d try a teaspoon of bicarbonate in some water, down it and have a drink of something else ready to drink. It makes your urine less acidic.

Canwejustrelaxnow · 07/06/2018 13:17

The sachets are bicarbonate of soda I thought.

Skinandbones · 07/06/2018 13:17

You need to go, they do give antibiotics if it's a bad case.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 13:18

Walk-in centre. Now. It can develop in a really nasty way if not.

NationalEspresso · 07/06/2018 13:23

Go to surgery, collect a water sample bottle, write down your symptoms (i.e. lower back pain, tummy pain, burning/stinging on passing urine, frequency, urgency, blood in urine etc) or ask for an accompanying tick box form - most receptions should have these to hand out. Bring in labelled sample bottle and ask for it to be tested and for you to be put on phone list.
HCA or nurse will dip your sample and if it shows anything up, the GP or a prescribing nurse will probably issue you with a front line antibiotic such as Nitrofurantoin, then send the sample to the lab for further testing.
If it comes back as a bug that is sensitive to a different type of antibiotic, you will then be issued with another one instead.
GP is unlikely to issue antibiotics without at least an initial dip test.

DragonsAndCakes · 07/06/2018 13:23

Yeah, relax although I have a feeling they aren’t quite as alkaline? I’m not sure but I’ve had success with bicarb when the sachets have failed. Or perhaps they just took longer to work that time!

Mari50 · 07/06/2018 13:25

If you’ve had cystitis before you can order antibiotics online from Lloyd’s chemist or Superdrug.
Depending where you are some chemists will prescribe for women with recurrent uti’s but YA definitely NBU to see your gp if these other options are not available.
Cystitis is hellish, mine always ramps up to blood in my urine and utter agony in about 12-24 hours and doesn’t resolve without antibiotics.

hammeringinmyhead · 07/06/2018 13:27

Go! I left one once and was nearly hospitalised with a kidney infection. I was hallucinating and didn't eat for a week.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 13:29

Have been in a similar situation and had to attend the equivalent of A&E on a Sunday. I was in considerable pain by then and feeling increasingly ill.

Saw a triage nurse initially. A sample was taken which indicated an infection. I was referred to a doctor - had to wait for a bit and felt increasingly awful.

The doctor prescribed a course of antibiotics because there was blood, pus etc in the sample. I collected the prescription from a Sunday pharmacy and the medication worked really quickly and well.

In restrospect, I know I ignored a slight burning sensation for a while when weeing.

This is not the time to wait and see or for home remedies. Go ASAP.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 07/06/2018 13:29

Thanks everyone. I’ve just looked at the loo roll dh picked up and it’s got bloody Shea butter in it which won’t be helping. Why do companies do that?! My gp surgery re-opens in half an hour, will give them a call then.

It really is so painful, was up all last night it. I’ve never had a case so bad.

Go to the GP. If you've got a bacterial infection that is not shifting then you are at risk of a kidney infection.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 13:31

Off the counter remedies are hopeless at the stage you are at, OP. You could end up with sepsis unless you get this checked out now. Today.

marmitecrumpets · 07/06/2018 13:31

Definitely go to the doctors

Knittedfairies · 07/06/2018 13:32

I was told to alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen for pain relief, but go to see your GP/Walk in centre.

RedPony1 · 07/06/2018 13:33

I go every time without fail, i always need antibiotics and my Drs treats it as an emergency so i always get a same day appointment. I'm currently on antibiotics for it at the moment Sad i was up all Sunday night with it

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 07/06/2018 13:38

Go! A UTI requires antibiotics.

gingerpickles · 07/06/2018 13:41

Go!

I've ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics for leaving urine infections. The last time I ended up very poorly very quickly. Please go and see the GP.
