Am I being unreasonable to go to my gp with this?

Sorry, posting mainly for traffic. I’m in agony with cystitis, literally crying with the pain! I know it’s cystitus as I’ve had it before and often use the over the counter remedies but this time they aren’t working. Is there any point in seeing my gp or is there nothing they can do? It’s been 2 days now. I’m drinking loads of water and dh is going to get me some cranberry juice.

I suffer frequent UTI’s really painful so YANBU. Cranberry juice is probably the worse thing you could drink, Lemon Barley water as strong as you can bear it is better. I also take D-mannose to help reduce the e-coli sticking to the bladder wall. If you google Sweet Cures, Anna explains very clearly about UTI and why cranberry juice should be avoided. If you GP agrees it might be worth having antibiotics at home just incase. I also have some testing strips to keep a check on things. Good luck and I hope you feel much better soon.

My Drs will allow patients to bring in a sample, fill in a form to go with said sample, leave with reception staff and they will get Dr to test it - all without the need for appt! See if this is a possibility for you?

I've tried to treat with over the counter before when cystitis was in early stages. Didn't work at all and in the end I needed 2 back to back courses of antibiotics to shift it. These bacterial infections can be very very nasty and it's not worth the risk of the infection travelling to your kidneys.

Get seen ASAP, my SIL was fobbed off with my niece and she nearly died of sepsis.

Obviously that's an extreme case but for the sake of a dip test it's not worth the risk.

At my doctors you just hand dip tests in and the nurse does them within a couple of hours, any problems the receptionist rings with a prescription or an appointment.

TheGoalIsToStayOutOfTheHole · 07/06/2018 16:08

Yeah definitely go.

What may help is, and this sounds pretty gross but it has helped me before..having a hot bath and actually peeing in the bath, rather than trying to do it elsewhere. The heat helps a lot. I did this after having the kids too, felt gross filling the bath to have a wee mind, but yeah, anything that helps IMO until things are better.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 07/06/2018 16:08

Don’t bother driving to the GP, they’re unlikely to have any free appointments unless you ring again and ask.

Just go to a walk in centre, designed for people who need seeing urgently that day whose doctors can’t give them an appointment.

Natasha2 · 07/06/2018 16:08

I used to urinate blood every 3 months or so around 20 years ago and was in agoney emptying my bladder. I saw a specialist and had a cystoscopy to see if it was anything sinister which cured it for around 12 years. They don't know why it sometimes cures it but it does, so I was very lucky.

When it started again I had another cystoscopy and again, it cured it.

Shambu · 07/06/2018 16:09

Completely the wrong advice from the receptionist.

Go to a walk in centre today or make an emergency on the day appointment tomorrow (if your surgery provides that service - ring up when it opens).

You need antibiotics asap.

I did similar to you and ended up with a kidney infectio. Me GP told me off - she said "never mess around with a urine infection and go to walk in clinic if necessary."

OP:

I hope the OP is now being seen in. Walk in centre.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 16:19

Sorry

I hope the OP is now being seen in a Walk in centre.

Neolara · 07/06/2018 16:25

Um, I can't offer advice on utis but I can offer the following: please don't take medical advice from a receptionist. They know as much about medicine as me, which is pretty much zero. Ring back, tell the receptionist you need a nurse or GP appointment or a call back.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 07/06/2018 16:29

All sorted, the dr called and asked me to come in. After a dip test prescribed antibiotics for a water infection. Feeling so relieved but rough as anything. Hope they kick in soon.

Thank you for all the replies!

Phew. So glad you have been treated.

DeathByMascara · 07/06/2018 16:32

I’ve had sepsis from a UTI & ended up in HDU for a week. Don’t muck about with it.
