Am I being unreasonable to go to my gp with this?

Sorry, posting mainly for traffic. I’m in agony with cystitis, literally crying with the pain! I know it’s cystitus as I’ve had it before and often use the over the counter remedies but this time they aren’t working. Is there any point in seeing my gp or is there nothing they can do? It’s been 2 days now. I’m drinking loads of water and dh is going to get me some cranberry juice.

Go to the doctors. I picked it up on a cycling holiday (too hot, sweaty kit etc) and took an over the counter remedy when I got home. Didn't work, went to my GP and said I had blood in my pee, and he wrote me a script for antibiotics straight away. I try to avoid ABs, and haven't needed to take them for about ten years, but this time it was the only thing that would get rid of the infection.

piscis · 07/06/2018 13:42

Why shouldn't you go to the doctor if you are in agony?
I don't understand why do you even have to ask...

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 07/06/2018 13:44

@piscis because after having it before and it getting better after using the over the counters I wasn’t sure if I’m just being a wimp and should wait it out. But the replies have helped me see that I need to seek treatment.

Why would you be unreasonable? Don't get why you need mumsnet approval to see a GP!

beachysandy81 · 07/06/2018 13:50

..and I hope you feel better soon.

Godowneasy · 07/06/2018 13:51

You have my sympathy!
Definitely go to your GP- you need antibiotics.
I used to then get thrush after the antibiotics, but hope you don't.

amusedbush · 07/06/2018 13:51

I once got a urine infection on a Friday afternoon and by the time I was able to see a GP on the Monday I had a kidney infection and was off work for a week and then the antibiotics gave me terrible thrush, to add insult to injury.

Definitely get it seen to.

Lovemusic33 · 07/06/2018 13:52

I always go when I have this. Last time I was passing pure blood and was in agony. Best to get antibiotics. Hope you feel better soon.

goose1964 · 07/06/2018 13:57

Don't fill the advice to submit a sample without seeing a GP . There's a huge notice at our doctors telling us not to do that. Please see a GP I've needed antibiotics before

NationalEspresso · 07/06/2018 14:09

Why not goose? It's standard procedure at our surgery. If every single person with a suspected UTI demanded a GP dip a sample and record the symptoms in their presence, there would be barely any emergency appointments left.
A prescribing nurse is perfectly able to do it, send it off and a get a prescription issued.

Froglette16 · 07/06/2018 14:24

Yes go! A friend once neglected a stubborn uti and ended up in hospital with a kidney infection. She was in a lot of pain. Docs treating her said it frustrates them no end that women don’t complain earlier, but we have high levels of pain tolerance due to our bodies being made to give birth (whether or not we do but that’s not the point) so go go go! Hope you feel better soon. 🌷

liz70 · 07/06/2018 14:28

Off to the docs with you! Repeated untreated UTIs can cause irreversible kidney damage and even failure. Don't risk your renal health!

TammySwansonTwo · 07/06/2018 14:34

Had the same once and tried to push on through and ended up peeing blood and seriously unwell.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 07/06/2018 15:09

Not a great result, just got off the phone with the receptionist who said to just persevere with the sachets and drink lots of water. I’ve asked for a dr to call me back but if they haven’t by 4 dh is going to drive me there and I’ll insist on them doing a dip stick as cannot stand another day of this.

No!!! You need a dip stick test ASAP if it’s not clearing up. You’ve likely got a UTI and left it could travel up to your kidneys which is nasty! Phone back OP and insist.

Iooselipssinkships · 07/06/2018 15:20

I had a uti a few months back which developed into a kidney infection and I spent 4 days in hospital after being rushed through by my Doctor.
Tell the receptionist you need seeing urgently by an actual GP or you'll be left with no option other than to go to a&e. Oh and tell her to shove the sachets up her arse. You need seeing to.

Ekphrasis · 07/06/2018 15:26

Wow to the receptionist!

Could you ask for a urine pot and just drop it off; our surgery has nurses who quickly check for you without any gp involvement, at any time.

I had a uti during pregnancy recently that was bordering on early stage sepsis (apparently.) off the chart temp and high heart rate.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 15:30

The receptionist does not know. She is not a doctor.

Go to a Walk in centre. You need to see a triage nurse and probably you will be referred.

HollowTalk · 07/06/2018 15:31

You need to change your loo roll, OP. Any of those perfumed ones are really bad for you.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 15:32

I urge you to do this. Sepsis is a real concern.

RoseWhiteTips · 07/06/2018 15:34

See a doctor.

Celebelly · 07/06/2018 15:48

Def go to docs. Bad cystitis is awful.

As a PP said, you can buy antibiotics from Lloyds to keep in the house if it's something you get occasionally. I always have cystitis meds in the house just in case (and I was able to save my best friend from a really unpleasant bout when she was visiting!). Worth doing/knowing for next time!

Can you get to a Lloyds? They sell them over the counter I believe too.

Floeer · 07/06/2018 15:50

Are you able to get to a Walk in Centre?
