To wonder about milk supply for older breastfed kids

I've always wondered when mums say they bf their toddler normally only once or twice a day but more when they're sick or teething or whatever, how do they have supply for those extra feeds when needed?

By the time ds2 was a toddler, bf was more about comfort than dinner so I don't think he took much actual milk. But breasts are marvellous things and it all seemed to work itself out.
