That little

Pence, trumpbumlicker in chief for a self-serving purpose - fortuitous his god's plan for him so closely falls into line with his steely, laser-focused ambition.

'Marc Short told me that in moments of need, Pence turns to a favorite passage in Jeremiah: “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Short said, “Mike believes strongly in the sovereignty of God, and knowing that the Lord has a plan for him.” '

'ON THE EVIDENCE of a lifetime, America’s vice president is not a complex man. Instead he is three extremely simple ones: an incompetent ideologue, an obsequious toady, and a self-serving schemer.'

The smallest man to occupy the office of POTUS, what a dick:

Macron doing himself no favours, there is no lasting upside to enabling this void in a suit.

lionheart · 09/06/2018 14:44

Not good for Macron that's for sure.

Trump trade wars:

(He was schooled by Fred T. and Cohn to believe everyone is out to rip him off, so unsurprising he fixates on it.)

Hello, I'm an old hand under a new name, just popping in with Dan Rather's latest (and surprisingly depressing) take on Trump:

"I never thought that the great post-World War II alliances between the United States and Europe and Canada would be undermined by a president who was inclined to coddle dictators while spitting in the faces of our best friends.

Of all the long-term damage President Trump is inflicting on this country (and the larger world), I think what is happening in this arena could prove to be the most seismic. Who knows how a new world order could shake out? You can start with climate change and then segue to a heavy-handed and bumbling handling of trade issues. But the end result is the same. Those countries that exemplify democracy, who champion responsible government, and who have been the bulwark of decades of global security (and moral leadership) are being told that all that history doesn't matter. And they are getting the message that the values that we were all supposed to largely share, no longer apply to the United States - at least as President Trump and his enablers see our country and its destiny.

The hypocrisy of the President and his surrogates on this is all the more striking. It was Trump and many in the GOP who heavily criticized President Obama for his treatment of our allies. Go to Europe or Canada now and ask the vast majority of the people living there (never mind those in government) who they would rather have as president.

But of course Donald Trump's rhetoric is always a means to an end. It is about whatever serves his narrow self-interests - consistency, honesty, or reason be damned. .

Have we had issues with our allies in the past? Of course. That is the nature of all great friendships. There can be points of disagreement, but in the end you come back to the values you share, that struggles you have overcome together, and a knowledge that none of us can survive alone.

I wonder if Donald Trump has many friends because he doesn't seem to understand the concept of friendship. My only hope is that our friends will not give up on the United States just because of who is in the White House."

I'm crawling back into my sand-castle now as I find it is better for my mental health to ignore the bolleaux. It's not looking good, is it?

PerkingFaintly · 09/06/2018 17:52

Keep taking care of yourself. It's important to rest and recover, all the better to persist in the long run.

Minimammoth · 09/06/2018 19:14

Just listen ring to R4 news, sounding sooooo positive re G7. But it’s all about trade deals. And it sounds as if he will bestow a favour on KJU, if he wants to do something special for his people( he won’t get another chance....) this man believes he is almighty, and the deal is all.

It’s all about Putin. It always was. Brexit, Trump, fake news, ‘populism’, the normalisation of racist lies. Destabilising the West was alway’s Putin’s only chance of avoiding Yanukovych’s fate & hanging on to all the cash he’s stolen. Sunday Times required reading tomorrow.

Although I know it would wreak (more) havoc on our economy I really wish the other G7 nation leaders would just say "Yeah, fuck you Trump" and band together for economics and military and really isolate us. Maybe then the assholes here would wake up!

TheClaws · 10/06/2018 03:34

I love that image of Angela Merkel and other world leaders clustered across the table from a recalcitrant Trump. He looks stroppy.

I honestly don’t know how the GOP can allow such a person to wander the world damaging his country’s reputation to such a degree and, in coming days, possibly leading the world to war. Indeed, his has put his allies well offside just when he may most need them.

As an aside: Flowers to @cozietozie - Hope your hand is healing well.
