I was never v sure of Comey. He's hard to read but I got a different view when I read his book. I concluded he was very sincere but flawed.
I'm not excusing what he did but it's much easier to see the whole picture from a distance. I think from the point that it became known that the FBI was investigating, he was in a difficult position. He was working from the firm understanding that Clinton would win and that any action the FBI took might influence her legitimacy as President. Lynch meeting WJC was an added complication. His actions were wrong, but they were his sincere judgement at the time and I respect that. His statement probably acknowledges that he does too. I think once he made one decision, the others followed.
It was obviously a very stressful time and Comey is silent in his book about the voices against him if there were any but I wouldn't have wanted to be in his shoes.
