This is all getting a bit serious now.
So about a month ago we find a pair of men’s socks in our pile of clean washing.
Neither of us have ever seen them before. They are a cartoon character pair so quite distinctive. We pondered over where they had come from, asked family, everyone denied knowledge so we just put the matter to bed.
Anyway, 2 weeks ago we find another pair of men’s socks on the floor in our bedroom. Trainer socks. Neither of us own trainer socks.
Only close family been here, all deny knowledge and it’s only my parents and sister that have been round. Parents don’t wear trainer socks and socks far too big for my sister. Also a bit grubby/dirty.
There has been a builder here, but he’s been in boots so doubt he’d wear trainer socks and if so why take them off?
DH started to get a bit suspicious.
There must be a reason why strange socks are appearing right?
Kids are preschoolers so nothing to do with them.

We had this issue with women's pants. They were more they type an older woman wears and in larger size so no fear of affair.
Our house had built in wardrobes and they left the matching bedside draws. I think they have fallen behind and got left but then somehow got into our washing.

Could it be prev occupants socks?

ThistleAmore · 04/06/2018 22:25

Oooh! Sock ghost!

bevelino · 04/06/2018 22:28

This happened with ds total random pair of socks in his drawer that I am 100 percent certain I did not buy . Can only think that maybe they were a spare from pre school he got sent home in and I didn't notice untill had been washed etc ? Still baffles me to this day !!

Either Sock ghost or we have portals where everyone else's lost socks end up. Only explanations

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/06/2018 22:37

100% builder and/or builder's boyfriend.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/06/2018 22:38

(were they a bit stiff? SORRY)

TheSpottedZebra · 04/06/2018 22:39

Oh jasey that is quite heartbreaking

BlankTimes · 04/06/2018 22:40

Could the builder have put the trainer socks on over his workboots to stop any earache from your mother re treading dirt into your carpets?

liz70 · 04/06/2018 22:40

"I am not going to put anything more on here"

Now, you know you can't leave us all hanging like that. Hmm

Judydreamsofhorses · 04/06/2018 22:41

We used to have a brilliant cocker spaniel who liked to carry things in his mouth. He used to steal socks straight from the tumble drier, knock the dirty linen basket over to get them, and wait at your feet while you removed them. He was also a master escapologist and until we built a six foot wall, would frequently come home with random socks. We would often get calls from people a few streets away to say they had him, but he was having a bacon roll with them before they brought him home. Fortunately he was a very cute, friendly soul and a bit of a “neighbourhood character”.

TERFragetteCity · 04/06/2018 22:41

Plus she does laundry for other people so would have to have a working washing machine herself.
Are you sure she isn't doing some of that whilst also cleaning your house?

ToadOfSadness · 04/06/2018 22:42

If the cleaner is doing washing for other people and her machine is broken she might have used your machine.

VanellopeVonSchweetz99 · 04/06/2018 22:45

Ah, OP has a cleaner? I missed that. Well then the mystery is solved.

Troels · 04/06/2018 22:49

tararabumdeay Good god I've now got two songs playing in my head, one for you name and one for that Irish song, my Dad used to sing it.
I need sleep.
My Aunt found pom poms in her washing machine when I was young, she never bought or made her baby clothes with pom poms on so for years went on about where the hell did those pom poms come from.

squeaver · 04/06/2018 22:52

Most likely answer is the cleaner, doing someone else's washing at your house.

I'd ask the builder if they're his socks, though, just to rule him out.

abbsisspartacus · 04/06/2018 22:54

Went to parents evening asked if ds had left his pants in the toilet being four he sometimes didn't quite make it and used to leave them on the floor at home so when I found him with no pants after school i assumed he left them except they weren't there no one had seen them but I know he went to school with pants on! And came home without never to be seen again literally they have never been found

So if you find a pair of Mickey mouse pants op they belong over here Grin

LauderSyme · 04/06/2018 22:56

Tarara you've planted an ear worm in my head now!

Sorry OP, I have no interesting plausible or even far-fetched suggestions. I boringly think the grubby ones must have been the builder's and the MM ones were carried in somehow by one of you and got overlooked until washed and dried.

Alb1 · 04/06/2018 22:56

We had this happen for a while when we lived in a flat years ago, started off as random socks and then one day a thong!

It turned out the neighbour always left their bedroom window open and our cat was sneaking in and pinching socks etc when she left them drying in her room, we only realised when she spotted the car fleeing with a sock in its mouth

RinkaIsAStrangeNameforADog · 04/06/2018 23:10

Grumpybearblue

We had this issue with women's pants. They were more they type an older woman wears and in larger size so no fear of affair.

Some twisted logic there! Because no one who is large has sex? Or because only "older women" wear a certain type of underwear? Or because no man has ever fancied an older larger woman?

OP
Just to say that it may not be the case that the two sock related incidents are connected - one could be the dog, one could be socks got mixed up with gym clothes or something out of the house.

Cindie943811A · 04/06/2018 23:17

Read a book once about how there are weak spots between this dimension and the next. Odd things like socks fall through and are swept up by special workers who every so often randomly shove them back. Very credible explanation for how these things go missing and occasionly reappear.

GetKnitted · 04/06/2018 23:20

Socks didn't necessarily come straight off the feet, they could have been put in a pocket and then fallen out, e.g. builder arrives in his trainers with his trainer socks on but needs to wear his boots for the building work, takes off his trainers and trainer socks, puts dirty trainer socks in pockets, puts on big socks and boots, comes to your house, furtles for screws or nails or something in his pocket and socks drop out when he doesn't notice them, et voila! (I just noticed that someone else also suggested the pockets!)

But totally agree that it is very random for two pairs to show up!

Oakmaiden · 04/06/2018 23:29

Oh, that is very plausible, GetKnitted. Well done.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 04/06/2018 23:36

either
a) op is having an affair and is wanting an good excuse to cover it up.
or
b) husband is gay and having an affair.
