Argh! Had sex on Saturday and used the withdrawal method. Just checked my dates and I would have been at my most fertile - day 12.
I really, really don't want to get the MAP, I hate the thought of it but I really don't want to be pregnant. Anyone ever got pregnant from withdrawal? I'm in my late 30's.

The MAP used to contain oestrogen and progesterone, so it often made you feel sick. Now it’s just progesterone, so it’s not as bad.

Want2bSupermum · 05/06/2018 00:46

minty which is why it doesn't work so well. DD2 was conceived while I was on the pill, using a condom that slipped so DH jumped off me like a bat out of hell. I took the MAP and nine months later we had DD2.

If fertilization has already occurred taking the MAP is a waste of time with the progesterone only pill. You need the one that stops it implanting which i understand to be the one with oestrogen, which does make you sick because it works. Here in the Us they don't allow the one with oaestrogen because stopping a fertilized egg from implanting goes against the beliefs of some religious nuts in the south.

It is however vital to know this difference so you can make sure you don't end up pregnant. I'm furious that it's not possible to get the proper MAP here in the US. The only true emergency contraceptive option for me was the coil but they didn't have one in stock. They will only put one in during the first 5 days after intercourse and it arrived on day six. Thank goodness she doesn't look to have autism and we can afford having a third.

Sidalee7 · 05/06/2018 09:39

I got the Ella one. Pharmacist said it should be 96% effective even if I have ovulated. Phew.

Hope you feel ok with it.

LemonysSnicket · 05/06/2018 11:12

I took it 6 times at Uni ... never made me ill or messed with my cycle once! Maybe it's a better formula now.

ReallyWTF · 05/06/2018 16:50

Well done OP.

I'm crapping myself after the withdrawl horror stories on here :(

Sidalee7 · 05/06/2018 18:18

Haven't felt rubbish at all and I remember when I last took it (in he 90's) you had to take 2 or 3 pills at different times. So a much better experience and I'm not freaking out anymore.

Give it time OP. I thought the same initially, and then when period was due I was SATAN.

Butterflykissess · 05/06/2018 19:16

Map completely ruined my periodsthey were so light before now they are heavy to the point it's difficukt going out. Would still be better than an unplanned pregnancy though.

Sidalee7 · 05/06/2018 19:27

@reallywtf - I am Satan usually before my period! I'll be like Satan x 1000 Shock

You were in the pill, using a condom, your husband withdrew as soon as he felt it slip and you took the MAP!

You must be the most fertile person in the world!

Are you just practicing celibacy now?

mirialis · 05/06/2018 19:57

Mumoftwo quite! It's astonishing! I feel like she should be paid handsomely to be involved with fertility science investigations (selfishly, as I'm going though IVF).

Pill + condom + MAP and STILL having a baby to show for it Shock

Want2bSupermum · 05/06/2018 20:32

Yes DH and I have taken part in a fertility study for the past two years. The investigation found he has a high concentration of sperm, I release two eggs most months about a week apart from each other and that we DTD more frequently than other couples.

The MAP here in the Us is bloody useless if you have already ovulated. It's progesterone only so only prevents ovulation. The researchers also said the pill is 98% effective based on it being taken at exactly the same time everyday with no illness or stress and includes time periods where fertility is zero. The researcher was clear that the pill is about 50% effective during peak fertility. Condoms are apparently about 20% effective during peak fertility.

DH had a vasectomy last month and just got the all clear. During the past two years since DD was born I've been pregnant twice and had two miscarriages at 8 and 9 weeks. Both times the researchers said the miscarriages were due to placenta issues. I was taking the pill the whole time, using condoms, tracking my fertility and yes I still got pregnant. After the second pregnancy we decided to not do any PIV. There are plenty of other ways to be intimate.

We have DTD twice since getting the all clear. Im so nervous about getting pregnant even though they said he is firing blanks.

mirialis · 05/06/2018 20:37

ah ok - a man with super-concentration of sperm, a double ovulating woman AND a couple who are at it like rabbits.

That explains it.

That’s amazing! Were your other kids planned? (Sorry being very nosy here but you are the fertility equivalent of a 6 foot 8 man!) If so I’m guessing you didn’t have any trouble conceiving?

I would count dh and I as pretty fertile - with both kids there was “less than 10 months between last pill and first gas and air” but this is a whole new league.

You are getting me all worried about only using one method of contraception (I’m on the mini pill) now. For the first 5 years of our marriage we also used condoms as a pregnancy would have been a disaster - it never occurred to me that that combination could possibly fail.

Want2bSupermum · 05/06/2018 20:43

Indeed. None of our DC were planned.

DD was conceived while on the pill. DS was conceived when I had a mirena in me. Luckily I was not very promiscuous before meeting DH and during the first 2 years of marriage DH was on the road with work an awful lot. He was home 2-3 days a month.

Want2bSupermum · 05/06/2018 20:48

The researcher did say that we were conceiving but our implantation was average.

Ironic you say DH and I have fertility that's equivalent to being 6'8". My Fil is 6'7" and my SIL is 6'2". DH is 'only' 6'4". DH is Danish and there is something about their Viking sperm. It's used a lot for donation.

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 05/06/2018 21:05

Interesting....

Dh and I with our pretty high fertility both have fair hair and blue eyes so presumably there is quite a lot of Viking stock in us too......

LoveInTokyo · 05/06/2018 21:07

The withdrawal method is not a method. I can’t believe people in their late 30s think it is.

Get the morning after pill. It’s better than having an abortion.

Want2bSupermum · 05/06/2018 21:24

mirilas good luck with your IVF. Hope you have success.

catbasilio · 06/06/2018 16:29

I might be silly but I would not take MAP. It screws the body badly. There is a small risk but there is a small risk even with other types of contraception.
Have used withdrawal for years and never got pregnant.

Gammeldragz · 06/06/2018 16:35

I got pregnant using withdrawal. Also got pregnant on the pill. Have had MAP once and an abortion. Both are preferable to an unwanted pregnancy thank you very much!
So far so good with the Mirena, it may have side effects but not stressing about pregnancy is lovely!

specialsubject · 06/06/2018 17:19

pregnancy is a much higher risk than the MAP.

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 06/06/2018 17:19

MAP. No brainer.

ReallyWTF · 08/06/2018 12:55

I too have had an abortion, and it doesn't fuck with your hormones as much as MAP. How crazy is that?!
