Argh! Had sex on Saturday and used the withdrawal method. Just checked my dates and I would have been at my most fertile - day 12.
I really, really don't want to get the MAP, I hate the thought of it but I really don't want to be pregnant. Anyone ever got pregnant from withdrawal? I'm in my late 30's.

You're in your late 30s and you don't know the answer to this question?

Sidalee7 · 04/06/2018 20:56

sorry - when I say has anyone got pregnant from withdrawal I was looking for people HERE that have. I do know that it isn't a reliable method of contraception!

Ahhhh, the withdrawal method. My brother used that after the second child. The third child is a really cute little talkative boy who never listens

mirialis · 04/06/2018 20:57

oh ok, that makes all the difference.

Sidalee7 · 04/06/2018 20:57

And @mumoftwoyoungkids - thank you!!!!

@foodylicious - late 30s was put because I think my fertility has probably declined Iyswim?

As someone else said it's not the level of risk of being pregnant, (which you cannot really quantify at an individual level), which should inform your decision, but the seriousnes of the consequences.

Sidalee7 · 04/06/2018 21:04

So, the consequences would be a big age gap and a pregnancy when I'm tipping 40.

The reason I don't want to take it is because I have taken it before and it made me feel like shite and screwed up my cycle. I don't want to pump my body full of chemicals if I don't need to.

I used the pull out method-- he's now 18!

Ellendegeneres · 04/06/2018 21:04

Take the pill. For gods sake, I know the side effects aren’t amazing and it makes you feel crap (did me anyway) it’s better than an unwanted pregnancy and termination or baby whichever you opt for.

Do it ASAP. The longer you take to take the pill the less effective it is

Ellendegeneres · 04/06/2018 21:05

I’m not trying to be harsh by the way- I had the internal battle myself, but took the thing. Still wound up pregnant, but that’s by the by.

Snowysky20009 · 04/06/2018 21:06

If you don't want a baby- take it. If you don't mind a baby- don't take it. If you do want a baby- don't take it. Simples.

adviceonthepox · 04/06/2018 21:10

Yep child no 4 is the result of using the withdrawal method while I was waiting to have the coil fitted after having child no3. I went to have the coil fitted was asked what contraception I was using told them and they refused to fit it till I had another period. It never came Blush

Sciurus83 · 04/06/2018 21:16

35 and four months pregnant from a withdrawal here! MAP really isn't that bad, the copper coil fitting can be painful, and you will need to get it organised quickly to use as emergency contraception

PickAChew · 04/06/2018 21:17

Pregnancy hormones are pretty shit, too.

If hoping you don't get pregnant was enough to prevent pregnancy, many pharmaceutical companies would be out of pocket and the world population wouldn't be 7 billion!

CountFosco · 04/06/2018 21:21

late 30s was put because I think my fertility has probably declined

I can help with that. I have 3DC. DD1 conceived first month of trying at age 36, DD2 conceived first month of trying at age 37, we had sex once that month the day my period ended, DS conceived first month of trying at age 41. When we had an accident when I was 44 I had the MAP and a copper coil fitted. I love my coil.

Take declining fertility in your late 30s with a pinch of salt, most women can still get pregnant in their late 30s and lots of us can still get pregnant into our 40s and some can still get pregant into their 50s.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 04/06/2018 21:31

This has to be one the scariest yet most hilarious thing I've ever read. 'I really don't want a baby but I'd rather risk an unwanted pregnancy because the morning after pull may make me feel sick and screw up my cycle'.....

Well, hello there morning sickness, kicked belly, bounced on bladder, Labour and birth pains, no period for 9 months followed by the horror of post pregnancy emptying womb, sleepless nights and a lifetime of parenting. How much easier you are than a couple days of nausea and a limited time only irregular period....

ApplesTheHare · 04/06/2018 21:35

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge hilarious, you've summed up my thoughts exactly.

OP I'm not sure it's possible for you to be late 30s and genuinely so shortsighted Confused

Sevendown · 04/06/2018 21:38

Pregnancy will screw up your cycle and make you feel a lot more ill than the map.

lozbeth · 04/06/2018 21:40

I would get the tablet to be safe otherwise there a good chance you could be pregnant

VladmirsPoutine · 04/06/2018 21:40

when I say has anyone got pregnant from withdrawal I was looking for people HERE that have.

Righto. So let's all say no, that will put your mind at ease will it?

It would be hilarious were it not so serious that a couple of days feeling out of sync trumps a potential life-time of feeling out of sync Grin

BakedBeeeen · 04/06/2018 21:42

Please take the MAP, you may not be allowed a coil fitted if there is a chance you may be pregnant. I had to take a pregnancy test the morning of my coil fitting to prove to my doctors that I wasn't pregnant.

Sidalee7 · 04/06/2018 21:44

I know, I know. You are all right. Blush
I'll go to the chemist in the morning.

Just really, really kicking myself. This isn't a usual occurrence for me!

OP posts:
HootOnTheBeach · 04/06/2018 21:44

I've been using withdrawal for 7 years, including on fertile days, and I've never been pregnant.

WonderTweek · 04/06/2018 21:54

I’ve taken the morning after pill three times in the last ten years and I’ve not noticed any side effects at all. It’s not a fun thing to go through but I genuinely didn’t want a baby back then and didn’t want to risk it despite the low likelihood.

I am actually pretty good at using contraception but condoms can split or one can forget that they had stopped taking the pill. Blush Got the coil now after having my (much wanted and planned) son and it’s great. The pill wasn’t right for me and the coil doesn’t turn me into a sobbing mess.
