To think ferry prices to Isle of Wight are ridiculous

Just booked our ferry for a short weekend away at the end of August, Suppose to cost £105 luckily we had Tesco boost vouchers so is only costing £35... but still Aibu to think they should charge per car rather than by person and considering its only 45 minutes away I think its a bit expensive especially as I’ve seen ferries to France for cheaper.

I’m guessing it’s a smaller ferry than the France ones....so less cars/passengers means increased costs to each one to cover overheads.

NotARegularPenguin · 03/06/2018 22:45

But yes, it’s put me off going in the past.

samanthasung · 03/06/2018 22:46

Ha, yes. I remember when we were young and naive and went to the isle of wight festival. Rolled up the ferry and our jaws dropped at how much the ferry was.

CocoAndTheChocolates · 03/06/2018 22:46

Yes way too much. My best friend lived there for a couple of years and the ferry would cripple her!

Choccywoccyhooha · 03/06/2018 22:47

Most hotels, holiday parks, and cottages on the IoW will book a ferry on your behalf for a reduced price.

PeterPiperPickedSeaShells · 03/06/2018 22:58

Yes, I r remember hearing once that the IOW ferry was, mile for mile, the most expensive in the world. Not 100% sure that's true but it wouldn't surprise me!

GerdaLovesLili · 03/06/2018 23:03

I had a friend that kept a car on either side of the Solent. It was cheaper than paying to take the car over twice a week. It is not the cheapest journey per mile. naturenet.net/blogs/2016/09/09/ferries/

bottomsup2 · 03/06/2018 23:34

I went yesterday, it cost £60 for a car plus five people. It is way too expensive, I think it should be less than half that. But it’s full in the summer.

Alienspaceship · 03/06/2018 23:37

It’s ridicilously expensive any time of the year and means we don’t go.

IsabelleSE19 · 03/06/2018 23:41

YANBU. It was top of our list to go to for holiday this year, but bit skint so have chosen a destination that doesn't need a ferry. Hope to get back there before the DC are too old to appreciate it!

nancy75 · 03/06/2018 23:50

For everyone saying it should be cheaper what are you basing that on?
The ferry company has to pay staff, maintenance, insurance & fuel costs ( and probably loads of other costs I haven’t thought of)
It’s easy to say it should be £x but if you don’t know how much it costs to run how can you say how much the fare should be?
