To ask if your kids watch TV at breakfast

Just that really. Do your kids watch TV while eating their breakfast and if not, what do they do?

We use TV time as a bribe to get ready in the morning- only allowed once they are completely ready for school, the quicker they get ready the more tv they get Wink

poca · 03/06/2018 21:44

When I was a child, I ate virtually all my meals in front of the TV

Yes my childhood was a mix of family dinners at the table and cocopops in front of Big Breakfast.

Tr1skel1on · 03/06/2018 21:44

@oh I'm the one that has no idea... Why shouldn't my kids clean their teeth after breakfast? I have been going to the dentist with them all their lives & never seen any leaflet?!

foxessocks · 03/06/2018 21:46

Not usually, maybe at the weekend or if my dd gets up before me dh might fling some toast her way and pop the TV on before he goes to work! But most days we eat breakfast at the table together and then I let them have some TV while I have a shower after breakfast some time. Not sure if that counts!

Hoolahoophop · 03/06/2018 21:47

Yes 1 and 3 I put it on when they are dressed to keep them entertained while I'm in the shower. Then can't deal with the tantrums if I turn it off while they eat. After breakfast is always an activity so it goes off then.

Beeperbird · 03/06/2018 21:48

Nope, but only because that would turn breakfast into a marathon instead of the normal sprint! I’m normally rushing about with chores and chatting to DS while he munches his wheatabix or tries to feed it to the cat! I must admit I do use TV at other times tho when I need 20 mins without the “mummy.... mummy.... mummy” monster tugging on my legs!

sparklefluff · 03/06/2018 21:49

They watch their iPads whilst eating their breakfast and I get in the shower.
They then come up and get dressed and ready and by that time I am ready and able to assist.

Works perfectly in this house.

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/06/2018 21:49

No, we eat all meals in the dining room . There's no tv in there . I have the kitchen radio on and we chat.

0h · 03/06/2018 21:49

It can damage their enamel if you brush soon after. Or something. Font of all knowledge, me! So 30+ minutes after breakfast is okay. But my dentist (and many others) suggest before.

crayoladreamz · 03/06/2018 21:49

No never. Children are 6,4&2

There is only an hour between waking and leaving the house so they eat, dress and play with Lego or brio or colour or get the play dough out.

Don’t think they ever have once had tv on first thing but we dont do a lot of screens anyway.

missymousey · 03/06/2018 21:50

Nice things to do - just talk to each other! Your attention / love / cheerfulness it is the nicest thing you could possibly give her.

Breakfast was just a mad free-for-all when I was growing up - telly on, everyone getting their own, eating on the sofa, being grumpy about running late. Now I have DS I'm determined that we always sit down as a family and make it a nice calm start to the day. He's only 13 months though, I just hope it lasts!

We don't have a telly at all though Grin

Notcontent · 03/06/2018 21:51

Never on school days, but on weekends yes.

Heartofglass12345 · 03/06/2018 21:52

No he takes long enough to get ready as it is lol. I usually end up dressing him as he's eating his breakfast Confused

Justgimmeit · 03/06/2018 21:52

Mine don't eat in the living room so no tv for them. They fight with each other for entertainment Hmm

BluebellCockleshell123 · 03/06/2018 21:56

Never. Mine would be glued to the telly and would forget to chew!

On school days they are allowed screen time when they are completely ready (a rare occurrence!).

At weekends they have screens when they wake up and we have breakfast later. No TV in the kitchen anyway.

steppemum · 03/06/2018 21:56

no tv in our house in the mornings.

I wouldn't put it on either, never got the idea of TV in the background, that is what radio is for!

But then I wouldn't have TV in kitchen/dining room or bedroom. We have one in living room.

We eat breakfast at kitchen table, no need for TV

Titsywoo · 03/06/2018 21:57

No although I think they used to when they were little. They are 13 and 11 now and never really watch TV! Too busy on their laptops/phones Grin.

They don't really use screens in the morning - mainly because it's always a rush as we tend to get up as late as possible!

Ginnotginger · 03/06/2018 21:57

Yes. School mornings he eats breakfast in his undies (if he is fully dressed he will spill something down his clothes - guaranteed) watching Paw Patrol whilst I get ready, then as soon as it ends he finishes getting dressed, whilst talking constantly about Paw Patrol, then we are off to school.
Weekends he chooses whether he watches or not. As long as he sits in one place to eat, I don't mind.

bonbonours · 03/06/2018 21:57

We don't as breakfast is in the kitchen, no TV in there. Mine are 7, 10 and 11 and hardly watch any actual TV anymore just YouTube on their tablets. They used to go on these first thing in the morning but it kept making us late so now they are only allowed once they have eaten, dressed, done their morning chore, got their school bag ready and brushed their teeth. Mostly we just eat, it only takes 10 minutes or so, not sure why you'd need to do anything else. We have no screens at the table rule, partly because my son goes on slow motion eating mode if watching anything, he is incapable of multi tasking. Sometimes we chat about what's happening that day, sometimes we sit in companionable silence.

On a different note I have read the thing about brushing teeth first but surely breakfast tastes weird if you've already brushed?? Orange juice on top of mint? Mine all have fruit with breakfast there's no way they'd eat it after brushing.

OohMavis · 03/06/2018 21:58

We live a five minute walk from school and are all early risers, which leaves quite a bit of down time in the morning before the school run. But still, no TV during breakfast.

If I let them I guarantee we'd be late even with all the time we have. They'd sit there mouths agape with their uneaten food in their laps.

They have to finish breakfast, get ready, teeth brushed and shit together before the TV gets turned on for half an hour!

notacooldad · 03/06/2018 22:00

We didn't get a tv until DS1 was nearly 5 and DS2.was 2.
We never and still don't have the tv on in the morning or afternoon. We don't put it on until late ish int he evening on Saturday or Sunday, say from maybe 8 or 9 o'clock.
No particular reason why. I'm not anti tv or anything p, it's just the way our house flows.
The main thing is the tv can't be on if nobody is around. So watch a tv programme when it's finished or you have finished watching the tv goes off.

I hate going into houses and the tv is on and nobody is around or worse trying to do an interview at someone's house and you are shouting over the tv.

Rach5l · 03/06/2018 22:01

No way! God I'd never get them off to school in time!

OohAahBird · 03/06/2018 22:02

No tv before school, weekends are different

Sparrowlegs248 · 03/06/2018 22:04

I'll add that mine are only 1 and nearly 3. The older just isn't interested in tv but then I think it's because I don't watch it. It's just never on. Growing up we didn't have the tv on at meal times. My husband did and it always irritated me that it was the first thing he did when he got up and went downstairs.

I have switched my tv on (and quickly off again!) twice since November.

bookmum08 · 03/06/2018 22:06

Me and my daughter quite often watch Everybody loves Raymond before school. It's a programme we both enjoy and that's when it's on. Yes we could record it to watch later but I quite enjoy sitting snuggling up on the sofa drinking a cup of tea watching a comedy. Nice start to the day.
