To ask if your kids watch TV at breakfast

Just that really. Do your kids watch TV while eating their breakfast and if not, what do they do?

My 7yr old dd watches TV whilst eating her breakfast. It doesn't slow her down, or distract her from getting ready. She spends all day in school learning/ being active (including running a mile when she gets there!) so I see no harm in her watching a bit of TV before she leaves.

tinyme77 · 03/06/2018 21:22

During the week we eat together so no, At weekends we soometimes let them. Never have tv at family meal times. Helps set their behaviour for life.

postcardsfrom · 03/06/2018 21:24

Never. We don’t have tv at all on school day mornings and on weekends they sit at the table and eat. On the few occasions they didn’t they ate less and we couldn’t get their attention at all. It’s precious time for us at breakfast as it’s the one meal we eat together every day or at least are altogether every day even if one of the adults are just grabbing coffee on their way out for work

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 03/06/2018 21:24

Yes they do. They watch Cbeebies, or Milkshake cos I'm busy in the morning and it allows me to get things done. Then it's Jeremy Kyle time.☺

NapQueen · 03/06/2018 21:26

No because they eat breakfasy at CMs/school breakfast club. They do get ten mins, 7.30am-7.40am before we leave for a cartoon if they are dressed. Sometimes they have a banana/cereal bar whilst watching. Sometimes not.

Weekends we just grab breakfast as an when. Dd likes to eat on waking so she will have toast straight away. Ds prefers a piece of fruit first then 45 mins or so later will have cereal or toast. We only have one room living diner so sometimes telly is on during this, sometimes not, sometimes they are on tablets, sometimes they are playing in their room. Its all.very casual at weekends.

ZanyMobster · 03/06/2018 21:28

Mine are 12 & 10 so are old enough to get their own breakfast and decide what they fancy doing. We have an open plan ground floor main room so the kitchen/lounge/diner is together so they can see the tv. One usually watches youtube and the other has the tv on. They have to turn it all off at 8am for the last 15 mins before leaving for shoes & blazers on/teeth/last minute panic of not having the right kit/books etc (even though they apparently got it ready the night before)

They don't watch loads of tv (more gaming if they are not out playing sports) so I really don't mind but if they are not getting ready quick enough it goes straight off. DS2 has ADHD so is very easily distracted.

I have a 2yr old and a 1yr old, the tv is on a lot in the mornings to keep the toddler 2yr old entertained while I get stuff ready for us to go out but I do make them sit at the table for breakfast.

HOWEVER on pre school days she finishes at 12 and let her have her lunch in front of the telly cos she's exhausted and i get that!

ZanyMobster · 03/06/2018 21:29

Loved the comment from a pp about it not being necessary. Well most things we do aren't necessary but we do them because we like to. Why are children any different. I am not sure what harm it could possibly do, like I said my only issue is if they are running late then it's off.

LePetitPont · 03/06/2018 21:32

On nursery days, there isn’t time for breakfast but ds1 (3.5) will usually have a cereal bar and watch something on his tablet whilst we get ready. Ds2 (14 months) potters around after us.

On non-nursery days, we are all about CBeebies first thing. It’s often on from 6 as ds1 is an early riser —and drags the baby down with him— it buys me time to get jobs done and actually make breakfast. DS2 and I eat at the dining table but ds1 usually sits on the sofa. He has a real bug bear about sitting at the table unless we force it.

We usually have toys out so he sometimes has a play, then some food, then more play as well. Verrrry relaxed / non pressured food environment here.

While you're all here I'll remind you all that teeth are brushed BEFORE breakfast.

I know loads of you know that but there's always one that's has no idea (I didn't until reading a leaflet at the dentists out of boredom!).

Theworldisfullofgs · 03/06/2018 21:35

No. They get ready for school...
But we never watch tv during meals.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 03/06/2018 21:36

I didn't know that until I was about 30, Oh. My mum still maintains it can't be true.

DwangelaForever · 03/06/2018 21:37

@Tawdrylocalbrouhaha I'm the exact same when I hear peter rabbit I start panicking 😂

Metoodear · 03/06/2018 21:37

No because they don’t eat and watch telly it’s not good

We don’t do tv and food

We do food chatter and family time

killinginthenameof · 03/06/2018 21:39

Definitely not. Son eats breakfast with husband and they look at maps of the world or discuss which is the biggest sea creature or something

This has to be the most middle class statement I've ever read Grin

Mooneyes · 03/06/2018 21:39

No because it puts them in a bad mood and wrecks our morning routine.

The weekend is TV slob time

FissionChips · 03/06/2018 21:40

Yes. I don’t understand what harm watching TV is supposed to cause.

megletthesecond · 03/06/2018 21:40

If they're ready early they can watch some tv on a school day, usually Newsround.
At weekends they're allowed to eat breakfast in front of the tv.

PeonyTruffle · 03/06/2018 21:41

Yes, ds (3) does, but we're clearly in the minority according to this thread Blush

Tr1skel1on · 03/06/2018 21:41

Never. They are both either in high school or just about to go. I just can't understand how you would have spare time to sit & watch TV in the morning.

Also, I quite like talking to my 2 about their day ahead. Probably very old fashioned in this screen age. Mum checking FB & MN on her phone while kids watch TV.... Not judging, but equally not my thing
& I've never really understood it

MumofBoysx2 · 03/06/2018 21:41

They do, but on school days they have to be up, dressed, breakfast, teeth brushed and 15 mins of maths, then their time is their own - sometimes they watch TV (on YouTube) or sometimes they choose the Xbox. It works because we say they can watch as much as they want but if they miss the school gate they lose their screen time later ;-)

Shannaratiger · 03/06/2018 21:42

Yes ds gets up early so he can watch YouTube for 45 minutes before I get his breakfast. Watches it until 8:10 when he gets ready for school. Has to be a precise schedule or his anxiety gets really bad and can barely get him out for school.

formerbabe · 03/06/2018 21:42

I let my DC eat their breakfast whilst watching TV. We never eat breakfast together...there's no time. When I was a child, I ate virtually all my meals in front of the TV!

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 21:42

Everyone watched TV in the morning when I was growing up. We do to, while we get ready for nursery.

Uyulala · 03/06/2018 21:43

*by everyone I mean those living in my home
