Or will I be wasting their time?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant. First pregnancy. Had sickness in the beginning but haven't for weeks now. When I first got pregnant I was 5"9 and 74kg, I'm now 70kg and seem to be losing weight. I'm eating loads, appetite is huge, work a desk job and go to gym 3x a week but not enough to lose this weight. I've always done this amount of exercise so no changes there.

Is it normal to be pregnant, eating a shed load, normal amount of exercise, but to have lost 4kg in 18 weeks? 1kg a month (probably slightly more as I have baby weight to account for too) seems an awful lot?

Am I worrying over nothing?

Aren’t you seeing a midwife? That’s a good starting point. My experience is that doctors don’t want to see you for pregnancy stuff (but midwives will refer you to hospital if necessary).

SoftSheen · 03/06/2018 20:50

I would ask your midwife for advice, it does sound a bit unusual!

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 20:51

Ask your midwife - they’ll know better than your gp to start with re pregnancy stuff

Louellah · 03/06/2018 20:53

@TestingTestingWonTooFree I am but I don't like her at all. She never picks up the phone or has time for an appointment as she only works at my gp practice one day a week. She missed that I had a uti as she 'forgot' to take a urine sample (I did get an apology for this) at my booking appointment, and I ended up with a kidney infection. I just don't trust her judgement in the slightest as she seems not to care one jot... maybe this is my issue however and I just need to bite the bullet and see her!

I am fat and I lost weight with all of my pregnancies and weighed less on the day before giving birth than before I conceived but I do have POS amongst other things gynae.

make an appointment to speak to your midwife. it is probably nothing at all to worry about but you need things like your iron level checked etc.

its a very worrying time the middle bit of a pregnancy so just get all the help and support from the professionals that you need because they really wont mind being asked.

MatildaTheCat · 03/06/2018 20:54

It took me 20 plus weeks to get back to my prepregnancy weight. I was quite sick and generally not terribly hungry. Also no alcohol.

It’s not uncommon and if you aren’t ill or underweight it’s not concerning. I was a midwife. Actually, looking back it was one of the few times in my life I’ve struggled to gain weight. Smile

Louellah · 03/06/2018 20:54

Thanks @mummymeister - I'm so anxious as have had miscarriages and no live births sadly so this baby is very much wanted. I worry about everything.

Racecardriver · 03/06/2018 20:56

Maybe it is connected to the infection?

daimbars · 03/06/2018 20:56

I would mention it to your midwife, I lost 2 stone in my first trimester due to severe morning sickness but soon made up for it in the 2nd and 3rd.
How soon is your 20 week scan? As long as all is okay then I doubt there is anything to worry about. Perhaps try and bring it forward?

SharkSave · 03/06/2018 20:56

First time round I was lighter at the same stage than before I was pregnant.
I had sickness and ate a lot to keep it at bay but still lost weight. I think in my case it was the lack of alcohol!

reallybadidea · 03/06/2018 20:57

I would definitely go to the doctor. It may well be nothing to worry about but unintentional rapid weight loss should always be checked out.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 20:57

@Racecardriver could possibly be, though it did clear up 8 weeks ago!

@daimbars it's on 15/06 and I'll be exactly 20 weeks. Starting to worry a little now that baby isn't growing Sad

I'd see the Gp personally. Hope you get to the bottom of it OP.

Singlebutmarried · 03/06/2018 20:58

I lost weight throughout pregnancy, I had a good midwife though who reassured me.

In my experience all was ok, but I would book an appt with your gp if you can and get a once over and also voice your concerns over the midwife to the practice.

It could be there’s a midwife centre nearby you could transfer to.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 20:59

@GreatDuckCookery gp was my first thought too. Midwife will likely want me to see someone in general medicine anyway as she is unlikely to be able to investigate this? Hope baby is ok...

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 20:59

Actually hearing now you’ve had an infection and also previous losses id see the gp I think

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 20:59

Op you can go to an early pregnancy unit for a scan if you are worried?

TheLionRoars1110 · 03/06/2018 21:00

If you don't like the MW try switching! You might be able to see a MW at the hospital. I'd make a GP appointment and ask them for advice.

Flupibass · 03/06/2018 21:00

If you’re the slightest bit worried about anything at all pregnancy related then either visit or call the doctor or midwife, whoever you feel most comfortable with, that’s what they’re for, it’s your right. Don’t feel apologetic or that you are wasting their time.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:02

I think part of this is avoidance as well as I'm so scared that it's another miscarriage. I haven't felt baby move yet. I'm guessing this is normal for 18 weeks? I'm so clueless. Booking gp apt first thing tomorrow.

OP posts:
GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/06/2018 21:04

Try and get in tomorrow OP. Don't worry too much but it's good to get checked out.

Glasgowgin · 03/06/2018 21:15

I lost 6kg in first 1 and a half trimesters- 75kg when got pregnant and down to 69kg at 14 weeks, and didn't start to put on weight again until well after 20 weeks - I was only sick once in that whole time, but my appetite changed completely. Baby wasn't huge in the end but was absolutely fine.
Losing weight wouldn't make me think miscarriage (I'm a GP) but would want to check your thyroid bloods etc, so it's definitely worth going soonish.

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 21:17

I’d think thyroid as well which can also affect miscarriages etc so I think get checked out ASAP

mummymeister · 03/06/2018 21:20

oh bless you OP no wonder you are worried! do go and see the GP straightaway. they never see it as a waste honestly they don't.

you need to try and find something that helps to keep you calm. not easy I know but perhaps some form of yoga or meditation might do the trick. ask your gp about this as well.

I honestly cant remember when I felt any of mine move. I think it was fairly far on - beyond 20 weeks but as I say I just couldn't be sure.

try to focus on all the positives. look how far along you are already. really hope everything is ok and that someone can help you to find something to keep you relaxed.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:23

Thanks @Glasgowgin - a lot of my family including my dad are medical professionals but I made a pact a long time ago that I wouldn't ask them about sensitive things as they aren't able to give me an unbiased opinion. I asked my dad for his opinion each time I had a miscarriage and it broke his heart (he was hurting for me) every time so I shan't be asking him. Silly as it seems! Thanks for the reassurance.
