Or will I be wasting their time?

I'm 18 weeks pregnant. First pregnancy. Had sickness in the beginning but haven't for weeks now. When I first got pregnant I was 5"9 and 74kg, I'm now 70kg and seem to be losing weight. I'm eating loads, appetite is huge, work a desk job and go to gym 3x a week but not enough to lose this weight. I've always done this amount of exercise so no changes there.

Is it normal to be pregnant, eating a shed load, normal amount of exercise, but to have lost 4kg in 18 weeks? 1kg a month (probably slightly more as I have baby weight to account for too) seems an awful lot?

Am I worrying over nothing?

Thanks @mummymeister - they sound like words of wisdom to me!

They reckon you don’t feel the first baby move early as in later pregnancies. I felt my first at just over 20 weeks, but there is no fast rule.
I had several miscarriages and I’m afraid anxiety is unavoidable but just remember very day means it’s less likely and you’re one day nearer to having a healthy baby. Never avoid seeking advice at this important time - a caring health professional will never think you’re time wasting.
Good luck OP

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:40

Thank you @Cindie943811A - it really is a very anxious waiting game! Definitely going to have to close my eyes at the 20 week scan until midwife says 'there's the heartbeat'

Another vote that you won't be wasting anyone's time - you weren't overweight, so probably should be putting it on a bit, not losing it. If you dislike your midwife/health visitor, ask if there's someone else you could see, you should be regularly weighed and measured to check the baby is growing, it shouldn't be news to your local practice what you weigh, and if u haven't been seeing her, someone should be checking why - she sounds a bit useless.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:46

@Cannockcanring I'm 18 weeks and have seen her twice which I think is pretty normal? But she only weighed me at my first appointment. She made an appointment for me to see a consultant and I had no idea what it was for and wouldn't tell me over the phone as it was a data protection issue? She also hasn't updated my notes since my 12 week scan. My due date is out by two weeks on my online notes, no results on there from blood tests which came back weeks ago. I just don't see the point of having notes really. Lots of reasons why I don't have much faith in her, as harsh as that may sound...

The consultant will be because of the previous miscarriages

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:49

@applesandpears56 it was because I had a lletz procedure. The consultant had no idea why I was there when I turned up! All sorted now though 👍🏽

Every time you say more info I think get to the gp tomorrow!
Surely you know weight loss can be a sign of cancer?
I have my fingers crossed for you it is all just because you are eating well and not drinking though!!

Louellah · 03/06/2018 21:59

@applesandpears56 I don't have any reason to believe I have cancer? I'm hoping there are a number of more likely explanations! That's a big jump to make from 4kg weight loss Confused

OP posts:
Ellapaella · 03/06/2018 22:13

@Louellah yes I don't think you need to start worrying about cancer at this point! There are lots of other (far more plausible) explanations, you only have to look at the many replies above to see its not that unusual to lose a bit of weight in pregnancy. I didn't gain any weight at all for the first 5 months of all 3 of my pregnancies and only really gained anything substantial in the last few weeks.
Your body is doing amazing things and you may be eating less than you realise. Still worth speaking to your GP if you are concerned, if only just to put your mind at rest and they can monitor your progress.

Ellapaella · 03/06/2018 22:14

Oh and I didn't feel any movement in the first two pregnancies until around 22 weeks. This is not uncommon so don't worry about that yet.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 22:18

@Ellapaella bloody hope I don't have cancer anyway! Confused already had one scare and that was enough for me.

Hopefully this is all normal stuff...

I'd make a doctors appointment sooner rather than later to be on the safe side. They won't think you're wasting their time. Have you noticed any other changes at all?

BlancheM · 03/06/2018 22:29

Definitely GP over midwife, OP. When I had severe morning sickness I mentioned it to my midwife, she chuckled so I repeated myself as I was actually wanting advice. She told me to make an appointment with a GP for any health problems as she only dealt with 'the maternity side of things'.
Try not to worry too much Thanks

applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 22:32

I’m sorry op I didn’t mean to scare you. It’s just if I had had a cancer scare and then later got a symptom of cancer that’s where my mind would go. But I’m sorry that’s my anxiety not yours.
I agree many different explanations other than this though - thyroid for example.
Hope everything is ok Flowers

PandaPieForTea · 03/06/2018 22:34

My GP offered to do my pre-natal appointments when I mentioned a couple of things about my MW appointments. There is no reason not to see a GP with pregnancy related issues.

Louellah · 03/06/2018 22:35

@Popc0rn to be honest I have but only severe tiredness, metallic taste, headaches etc but I put this all down to pregnancy. Oh Man I feel worried. GP tomorrow hopefully...

OP posts:
applesandpears56 · 03/06/2018 22:37

Those are all pregnancy symptoms...

Louellah · 04/06/2018 05:11

Yes @applesandpears56 I know they can also be symptoms of other things making it hard to tell the root cause in pregnancy if something else is going on.

Cantchooseaname · 04/06/2018 05:38

I’m sure your gp will be happy to see you and put your mind at rest.
It’s such an anxious time when your previous experiences have stolen your innocence.
Try to take a little time each day to enjoy it. My anxiety was awful, right up to when I held my dd. I tried to spend 10 mins every day in pregnancy listening to music with her. It was our time. I chose music I could get lost in.
Good luck!!

Domino211 · 04/06/2018 07:49

Definitely go and check with GP just to make sure there’s nothing underlying that needs sorting.

I lost weight in one of my pregnancies and was eating and resting loads. He turned out to be a really big baby and I think he was just taking everything from me! I put some weight on between 20-30 weeks then lost it again in last 8 weeks. I was checked with bloods and scans but all was fine.

I hope you get to be seen and reassured and wish you a healthy happy pregnancy xx

JustVent · 04/06/2018 08:06

Has the midwife tried to listen to the heartbeat? Do you have a bump?

FASH84 · 04/06/2018 08:12

Can you call your early pregnancy unit and ask for a scan? Given your history I'm sure they'd get you in quickly. Hope everything is ok

Binkytheslug · 04/06/2018 10:09

It probably is ok- a lot is happening with the pregnancy establishing. Your baby is growing from a little blob of cells into a developing fetus. Your whole body is undergoing massive changes, and the energy has got to come from somewhere. However, it’s worth seeing your gp or midwife to get it checked, if nothing else for your reassurance. It’s never a waste of anyone’s time to be checked over. Whatever it is, it’s worrying you, so it’s a good idea to be seen. The worst that will happen is that you get assessed and told everything’s fine. All you lose is a couple of hours of your time, which compared to your peace of mind is a small price.

Louellah · 04/06/2018 11:27

Thanks everyone. I do have a bump yes, very small but it's there!! Been to docs this morning, apt at EPAU in Stoke at 2 for an urgent scan. Gp not too concerned but would rather me get checked out due to weight loss. Fingers crossed. Going out of my mind with worry.
