To ask for reviews of mirtazapine

Following previous thread regarding my husband taking Sertraline and having horrific side effects, G.P has now prescribed mirtazapine

Has anyone taken it and does it actually work?

I can’t say whether or not it will work for your DH, but it does work extremely well for me. I was prescribed it after reacting badly to another drug, and I think it’s fair to say that mirtazapine saves my life.

It's been great for me. Other ADs either made me feel like a zombie (foggy brain) or made me feel exhausted all day. As Mirtazapine is taken at night, it is unlikely to have either of those affects (and certainly doesn't on me).

ZispinAndChai · 03/06/2018 20:45

Seems to be okay for me so far. I've only been on it for about two months, though. It helps me sleep well, and has lifted the worst of my low mood.

Personal downsides: I'm much more hungry all the time (no weight gain so far, fingers crossed), and my dreams have gone insane. It's also not had any effect on my anxiety levels or other symptoms. (But since my symptoms get much worse if I don't sleep, it kind of helps by that route.)

GeekyBlinders · 03/06/2018 20:46

Emotionally it made me feel better. BUT it made me extremely hungry, which I’ve heard isn’t uncommon. I ent back to the doctor and he put me on Trazodone which he said was similar in effect but doesn’t make you hungry, and I found that an equally effective antidepressant.

GeekyBlinders · 03/06/2018 20:47

I should add that I do get brain fog when I’ve had to increase my dosage, plus I do feel tired a lot of the time but I also have B12 deficiency so that could be related.

ShovingLeopard · 03/06/2018 20:49

It's a very effective AD, and helps loads with sleep. However, it makes you hungrier than a Labrador, and IME also affects your metabolism so you put on weight much more easily, even if you manage to resist eating more.

Wheretheresawill1 · 03/06/2018 20:56

Helps with sleep but you put on quite a bit of weight with it

StephenKatz · 03/06/2018 20:57

It definitely helped with my anxiety where sertraline and many others failed. And it helped me to sleep a lot better.
But I've been on it for four months now and put on over a stone and a half unfortunately.

dangermouseisace · 03/06/2018 21:00

I've been on it 2.5 years, it helps with sleep a lot, before I was on it I wasn't sleeping but was tired all day/would drift off driving etc. I can stay awake all day now!

I put on weight initially but lost it all again. I have to be a bit more careful about what I eat and drink now though.
