Aibu to think they're trying to rip me off, and do I have the right to cancel?

I need my new carpet fitted I have it here already (bought and paid for, different company).
I got a quote for the fitting, £400 (this is for v small hallway + 2 rooms). This was listed as total cost, but the fitters arrived earlier and said it was £400 for each "section" (hallway, 2 small bedrooms = 3 sections apparently) making the "quote" £1200, I expressed my surprise at this for the reason above and showed them the email quote I had received. They said "we can discount it to £350 per section" but that's still over £1000 and way more than I'd be spending willingly. They also said "well we've arrived now so we have to do the job and you have to pay" I asked them to go, They're now sat outside in a van and one of them is on the phone.
Aibu to think this is a ridiculous price and they're trying to rip me off?
Can I cancel? They hadn't started work at all and to be honest if this is how much it will cost me I will just fit it myself (nervous about doing it)

But I'm worried especially as they're hovering outside and I'm not sure if I am liable for the cost of this. I could afford it but it would make other things so much harder for me...

They’re trying it on! Shut the door and organise someone else to fit it

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/06/2018 14:36

Huge rip off! I think we paid about £50 for a small but complicated room.

ChickenOrEgg6 · 03/06/2018 14:37

Door is shut + locked, just worried about getting any come backs from this (like being made to pay it anyway).
I don't really know the laws that well with regards to situations like this, sorry if I sound thick.

If the quote is clear and there can be no misinterpretation then send them on their way - they’re trying their luck. Are you a woman alone by any chance?

Fucking chancers.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 03/06/2018 14:37

Don’t pay them anything. Let them take you to court and lose. They won’t bother. They can’t triple the price like that.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 03/06/2018 14:38

Bloody hell. We paid £70 to have a massive bedroom carpet fitted 5.5m x 4m last week by carpet right.

TinyTickler · 03/06/2018 14:39

We said £400 for a 3 storey 4 bed townhouse. Definitely don't let them back in!

reddressblueshoes · 03/06/2018 14:39

What does the quote say? And what did you ask in writing? It should be pretty clear to be honest, and I sounds v much like the re chancing their arm.

NewYearNewMe18 · 03/06/2018 14:40

Carpet fitters will be self employed subcontactors trying it on.

Go back to the carpet shop and tell them - the subcontractors will likely lose their contract.

MyKingdomForBrie · 03/06/2018 14:40

They are absolutely pisstakers, just ignore them.

CarolineForbes · 03/06/2018 14:41

That doesn’t sound right at all. I paid around £400 recently for the whole house minus living room but including two staircases!

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 03/06/2018 14:41

You're so right to turn them away, they are hugely taking the piss! The quote says £400 not £400 per section not £1200 but £400 so that's what it should be.

I must also say I am so please to read a thread where someone was not a doormat, paid and only complained afterwards, it seems so rare these days that people stand up for themselves over stuff like this.

expatinscotland · 03/06/2018 14:46

Fuck them off! Don't let them back in.

ChickenOrEgg6 · 03/06/2018 14:47

I asked for a quote for the rooms (which are 2 bedrooms, one is 2m by 3.5m one is 2m by 4m, and the hallway which is 1m wide and just under 3m long).
I got a response saying that they would charge £400 to fit the carpet, with some conditions (no carpet to remove and no furniture over x size to move, both rooms are empty with no flooring so that's ok). I don't see any room for misunderstanding, or any reference to per room/section.

Butterflykissess · 03/06/2018 14:47

I was quote d £40 for a room a few months back (though it was a box room)

JengaCupboard · 03/06/2018 14:50

That’s an absolute joke. I paid £800 last year for three bedrooms and a stairs and landing including the actual carpet!! (Albeit roll-ends) Tell them to do one.

Omgineedanamechange · 03/06/2018 14:50

WTF, £400 to fit a carpet, it’s £60 tops here, and that’s for a large hall and stairs. Robbing bastards!

ChickenOrEgg6 · 03/06/2018 14:51

I'm just going to leave them out there and fit it my bloody self I think...

puguin86 · 03/06/2018 14:52

We paid 350 for the whole house to be refitted. They are chancers

Helloflamingogo · 03/06/2018 14:55

I paid £120 for 2 rooms - shop around if you need to, but I’d not try to fit it yourself as it will be a nightmare.

They’re absokutely at it.

Grin I meant to put that on the haiku thread!!!!

Bombardier25966 · 03/06/2018 14:57

The initial quote was excessive, what they're now after is ridiculous. Are they still sat there? Where did you find them?

Monny1 · 03/06/2018 14:57

Well done op

kingseat2016 · 03/06/2018 14:58

We were charged £70 by carpet right for a large double bedroom. That Included new underlay and gripper too. They are taking the piss
