Aibu to think they're trying to rip me off, and do I have the right to cancel?

I need my new carpet fitted I have it here already (bought and paid for, different company).
I got a quote for the fitting, £400 (this is for v small hallway + 2 rooms). This was listed as total cost, but the fitters arrived earlier and said it was £400 for each "section" (hallway, 2 small bedrooms = 3 sections apparently) making the "quote" £1200, I expressed my surprise at this for the reason above and showed them the email quote I had received. They said "we can discount it to £350 per section" but that's still over £1000 and way more than I'd be spending willingly. They also said "well we've arrived now so we have to do the job and you have to pay" I asked them to go, They're now sat outside in a van and one of them is on the phone.
Aibu to think this is a ridiculous price and they're trying to rip me off?
Can I cancel? They hadn't started work at all and to be honest if this is how much it will cost me I will just fit it myself (nervous about doing it)

But I'm worried especially as they're hovering outside and I'm not sure if I am liable for the cost of this. I could afford it but it would make other things so much harder for me...

I think a non emergency call to the police might be needed. Also can you give them the van number or any details from it? Facebook messaging the company also makes sense in case they are acting independently from them in the fraud.

ChasedByBees · 03/06/2018 15:24

Have they left yet?

TheGirlWithAPrince · 03/06/2018 15:24

ive been quoted £250 from a big company based all over england to fit 2x bedrooms a living room, hallway and lino in a small kitchen so they are trying it on or are just over priced as hell.

underneaththeash · 03/06/2018 15:25

No, that's ridiculous.....I would just get someone else to fit it another day.

Featherbag · 03/06/2018 15:27

I'd actually be contacting 101 to report this attempted scam OP, imagine how many times they've done this to elderly and/or vulnerable people!

FilledSoda · 03/06/2018 15:27

Be sure to tell the carpet shop.

e1y1 · 03/06/2018 15:28

Get rid of them, we paid about £150 to fit 4 rooms on on a £1800 carpet and that was with carpet right (who are known as rip offs anyway).

That’s outrageous.

Violetroselily · 03/06/2018 15:32

Pisstaking chancers

Are they still sat outside?

Greenkit · 03/06/2018 15:32

Bloody hell, what a rip off.

dizzy174 · 03/06/2018 15:32

are you confident enough to take a pic of the reg plate?

Bibesia · 03/06/2018 15:33

Contact the shop and ask them to tell the fitters to go away.

Ginkypig · 03/06/2018 15:35

I payed £80 (admittedly about 6 years ago) to fit a hall, a bedroom and a living room. They even very kindly surprised me by using the remnants to do the small cupboard in the hall too.

Yes the whole house was empty so there was nothing to move or any carpet to lift but even with that what they are trying to charge you is ridiculous!

Cliveybaby · 03/06/2018 15:35

Bloody hell that's extortionate! I paid £500 to get my whole house recarpeted a few years ago, and that included buying the carpet! (tiny 2-up 2-down).

BlueJava · 03/06/2018 15:36

Chancers - they are being totally unreasonable and trying to rip you off. I had 2 large rooms done recently and they were £40 each.

sonjadog · 03/06/2018 15:38

Are they still there?

Peanutbuttercups21 · 03/06/2018 15:41

Call the carpet shop!

GlitteryFluff · 03/06/2018 15:45

Definitely done the right thing.
Hope they've gone now.

Lemoncurd · 03/06/2018 15:46

Doesn't sound right at all. A couple of months ago we paid £60 for uneven shaped large bedroom. We're in an expensive area in the South East.

TryingToForgeAnewLife · 03/06/2018 15:47

Take photo's of them sitting outside your house

PlumsGalore · 03/06/2018 15:52

Outrageous price. Carpet fitting is one of the few trades I consider very reasonable, but the fitters can get a straight room done incredibly quickly.

I think the most I ever paid was 120 for stairs. Two flights of them. Stairs take a while though TBF.

LynetteScavo · 03/06/2018 15:54

I recently paid £80 for my large living room to be fitted.

They really are taking the piss.

YearOfYouRemember · 03/06/2018 16:00

You'd be silly to fit it yourself. It's not as easy as you would think.

Call the shop and tell them the situation.

Look on checkatrade.com

Oddcat · 03/06/2018 16:02

I'd never use Checkatrade.com after an acquaintance asked me to put a fake review on for her husband.

fivehundredguys · 03/06/2018 16:03

Utter piss take!
You are 100% not liable for these arseholes, threaten to call the police if they won't fuck off.
They are absolute crooks.

Mammalamb · 03/06/2018 16:04

Even £400 sounds too steep! Bloody chancers. I’d actually phone the non emergency police line if they keep hanging about
