Aibu to think they're trying to rip me off, and do I have the right to cancel?

I need my new carpet fitted I have it here already (bought and paid for, different company).
I got a quote for the fitting, £400 (this is for v small hallway + 2 rooms). This was listed as total cost, but the fitters arrived earlier and said it was £400 for each "section" (hallway, 2 small bedrooms = 3 sections apparently) making the "quote" £1200, I expressed my surprise at this for the reason above and showed them the email quote I had received. They said "we can discount it to £350 per section" but that's still over £1000 and way more than I'd be spending willingly. They also said "well we've arrived now so we have to do the job and you have to pay" I asked them to go, They're now sat outside in a van and one of them is on the phone.
Aibu to think this is a ridiculous price and they're trying to rip me off?
Can I cancel? They hadn't started work at all and to be honest if this is how much it will cost me I will just fit it myself (nervous about doing it)

But I'm worried especially as they're hovering outside and I'm not sure if I am liable for the cost of this. I could afford it but it would make other things so much harder for me...

Did they eventually go away, OP. Have you told the shop off?

EmmaSwann · 04/06/2018 19:07

@ChickenOrEgg6

come back and update us, OP!

What happened in the end?

ToftyAC · 04/06/2018 19:10

Jesus wept! We paid £750 for 2 bedrooms, hallway, bathroom, living/dining room and huge storage cupboards and that included carpet, gripper rods and fitting! Definitely trying it on!!!!!

blueluce85 · 04/06/2018 19:19

Hi OP, hope you are OK and they went on their way....

Annette69 · 04/06/2018 19:23

You are definitely being ripped off, just paid £300 for lovely carpet in large bedroom and fitted.

Belleoverandover · 04/06/2018 19:23

Hopefully you're ok OP

Scrumptiousbears · 04/06/2018 19:30

I'm sure we pain £200 for a 2 bed house. Every room including stairs and it was a half day job for him.

Scotland32 · 04/06/2018 19:36

Astounding! We paid £400 for fitting 3 bedrooms, hallway, landing, stairs and living room.

Imbluedabadee · 04/06/2018 19:40

I agree with whoever it was that said they were planning to pocket the £800 difference for themselves, I hope you made the company aware! I paid £360 for carpet fitting for my entire house - 3 bedrooms, landing, stairs, lounge, dining room and entrance hall with underlay too!

Boxerbinky · 04/06/2018 19:40

My DH is a floor fitter. Just told him the price quoted for the spaces. He said £100 for the whole job and thought the £400 original quote was too expensive! He did say depends where the job is of course but even if you are in London he said no way it should cost that much for empty rooms with no uplift or extra work.

Labradoodliedoodoo · 04/06/2018 19:46

Dontburstmybubble · 04/06/2018 19:49

What happened OP? How long did they sit there for? Did you call the shop? Are you ok?

HmmGrey · 04/06/2018 19:50

I paid £120 for the stairs, landing, medium sized bedroom and small box room in January.

Definitely trying it on!

mrselizabethdarcy · 04/06/2018 19:54

Come back and tell us you are OK OP!

jade9390 · 04/06/2018 20:10

Report them to the company who gave you the quote and complain, then they should offer a discount but I would look elsewhere

fourplusfour · 04/06/2018 20:14

Slightly concerned about OPs absence. Whats the MN protocol in these situations?

Shell4429 · 04/06/2018 20:35

Me too fourplusfour at first I wanted to know the outcome now I am beginning to worry that something has happened to OP

MyNameIsJane · 04/06/2018 20:58

Trading Standards would be worth a call too.

Jojofjo44 · 04/06/2018 21:14

Chancers most definitely. Hope OP is OK.

Bekstar · 04/06/2018 21:20

If you organised a fitting based on a quote in an email, then that quote has since changed your no longer tied. Even so unless you have signed a contract prior to it then they don't have any come back. Sounds to me like they are cowboys who don't want to know what was quoted and thinks they can bulky you into paying. Have you given card payments. If so phone bank and block the payments, cancel card etc to stop them taking anything. If they come back haseling you fone the police

Happygummibear · 04/06/2018 21:25

£40-£50 here..what a rip off.
Top tip , always get at least 3 quotes, will give you a good average so you will know if someone is well over. Sometimes you will get a high quote cause someone doesn't actually want the job.

Did they do one in the end?

I would report this to watchdog.

Mumthulu · 04/06/2018 23:46

The carpet place where I get mine from charge £40 standard fitting fee per room. Your place are trying to pull a fast one.

EveningHare · 04/06/2018 23:51

Did you speak to the shop?

Pgs007 · 05/06/2018 05:05

!!! I got 2 bedrooms, hallway, part of kitchen and lounge carpeted with underlay for £1300! 2 bed decent sized flat too and there is spare! tell them to go do one 😮
