To think that no one likes their middle name?

My DDs like each other’s middle names, but not their own. DH and I don’t like ours. Extrapolating to the rest of the world, no one likes their middle names, but I am not sure why.

I like mine. It’s a nice, non-offensive name and it’s a family name so I like the history.

I think middle names are important as they give you a more distinctive identity particularly if you have a common first or surname. This is really handy for social media or email addresses if you don’t want a string of numbers after your name!

frumpety · 03/06/2018 19:48

I have always been called by my middle name since birth , my first name is ok , don't come across many. So I see my 'real' name , the one they call you when they try to wake you up after surgery, as my middle name.

MsAwesomeDragon · 03/06/2018 19:50

I like mine. It's the same as my mum's middle name, and coincidentally it's the same as mil's name too. That made it a good choice for dd's middle name as both grandmas thought she was named for them, lol.

We all seem to like our middle names in our family. Middle names are always family names, whereas first names are just ours.

SnuffleBadger · 03/06/2018 19:52

I am known by mine, always have been. Not my choice....family tradition that the women of the family are known by their middle names. I actually really dislike my first name!

BitchQueen90 · 03/06/2018 19:55

Mine's alright. It's a flower. Become a lot more popular lately as a middle name but wasn't so much when I was born.

MrsKoala · 03/06/2018 19:57

DH prefers his. I'm meh about mine. It's an old fashioned (not in a trendy way) plain name that belonged to both my grandmothers. It goes with my long more exotic first name tho.

I love my boys middle names and dislike my dds middle name, but she was named after recently deceased MIL so i couldn't really argue. But it should have been Bluebell. Which would have suited her so well as her eyes are bright pale blue.

DarklyDreamingDexter · 03/06/2018 19:58

I don't like mine and try to avoid using it where possible. When I was a kid, others used to take the piss if they found out what it was. When I was born it was a fairly standard if slightly unusual name, but later connotations made it a bit of a joke. My parents nearly gave me the middle name Anne instead...Why didn't they?! Grrr!!

EleanorLavish · 03/06/2018 19:58

I love mine!
Ita. May be pronounced eye-tah or eee-tah, it means ‘thirst’ in irish, which I am.

MrsLaurac · 03/06/2018 20:02

Much prefer my middle name which is odd because i used to hate it as a kid and much prefer dh middle as does he.

KittyVonCatsworth · 03/06/2018 20:04

I like my middle name as it’s a family name. I wanted the same for my DD but it was vetoed by her dad. He wanted her now middle name as her first so this was the compromise. I still dislike her middle name.

Lennon80 · 03/06/2018 20:06

I never liked mine as it was my mums name but as soon as she died it took on great importance.

bringonyourwreckingball · 03/06/2018 20:09

I don’t like mine (Louise) but dd2 loves hers - it is Olivia which I wanted for a first name, DH didn’t, I put my foot down when I was over 2 weeks late and just a tiny bit hormonal...dd2 when she was tiny thought she was called (name) I love you (surname)

LadyOdd · 03/06/2018 20:14

I loved my mums middle name so much I took it as a last name! I.e Iam daughter of lady vanilla odd sun and I’m now lady beynon odd and so is my DD

LadyOdd · 03/06/2018 20:15

It’s awkward explaining it as my actual middle name was her maiden name 😆

theluggageslegs · 03/06/2018 20:21

Mine is very old fashioned, and not even in an old lady name that’s now trendy way. I don’t like it, and I don’t like my first name either.

So of course I did the same to my own child, whose middle names give a nod to his two great-grandads and are of course tremendously unfrashionable. Oops.

e1y1 · 03/06/2018 20:27

I like mine. MIL actually goes by one of her middle names (she has two) as her main name pretty much all her life. In fact it’s hard to think of her as what her first name is, no one uses it.

robinsinthespring · 03/06/2018 20:28

I hate my middle name. I also never liked my first name whilst growing up as it wasn't commonly used, but I like it better now I'm older.

llangennith · 03/06/2018 20:46

Hated mine as it was the female equivalent to my lovely dad’s name. Nothing wrong with it really but I wanted a name that didn’t belong to anyone else iykwim.

needyourlovingtouch · 03/06/2018 20:48

@BlondeB83 is it Jane?

mamahanji · 03/06/2018 21:29

My middle name is a very common 90s middle name. I was fine with it until a few years ago my Dad told us it was the name of his favourite ex girlfriend...

Want2beme · 03/06/2018 21:38

I like mine. I'm named after my grannie and I wish it was my first name. I have a dreadful first name and so does my sister.

StripeyDeckchair · 03/06/2018 21:42

I love my middle name and hate my first name. I wish I'd had the confidence to start using it when I left home.

RoseMartha · 03/06/2018 21:42

I like mine

blackheartsgirl · 03/06/2018 21:47

I love mine, hate my first name

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 04/06/2018 09:55

I don't have one, neither does DS1, my DDs have one each, DS2 has 2.
