Actual cones in front of someone's house!

On holiday last week & I was amazed to see someone had actually left cones outside their house to reserve the space on the road.

Was very tempted to move them, wish I had now Grin

It's quite common - especially if they are expecting a delivery of a large item, building work or a skip. Or just because they want to park outside their house. I assume it's not legal.

Bekabeech · 02/06/2018 15:51

When we moved the last two times the council provided cones to "reserve" space for our removal lorry. They do similar for skips you have arranged (and paid) to have on the road.

I've been known to park between them if they clearly there for no particular reason!

adaline · 02/06/2018 16:20

Our old neighbours used to do this. Someone used to regularly move the cone, park and put the cone on top of their car 😂

Figmentofimagination · 02/06/2018 16:42

A house on the same street as my doctors does this. They have a drive but don't like anyone parking in front of their house. Whenever he does park in front of his house, he makes sure to replace the cone before driving off.
I've seen it before where a woman has got out of her car, moved the cone and parked up. The old man who lives in the house came out shouting at her that she can't park there. She kept repeating that she could as she pays road tax and there are no markings to say she can't park there, then she just walked off.
I never park there though, I don't want the hassle from him.

waddlemyway · 02/06/2018 16:45

My friend puts the cones outside/around her car to stop people scratching it on her narrow, busy road that should be a one-way but isn't! Grin

DustyMaiden · 02/06/2018 16:48

The undertaker put cones outside my house the night before a funeral.

Freaklikemeee · 02/06/2018 17:07

I booked (and paid for) a reserved parking space when I moved house and the council came and placed the cones in the appropriate spot.

So don't be a dick and move them just because you're too lazy to park somewhere else.

PavlovaPrincess · 02/06/2018 17:36

We used to live on a street that was close to a town centre. There was one guy, who didn't live on our street, or any of the surrounding streets, who would park there all day, go to work, then put cones out for the morning when he left.

They eventually ended up behind a bush.

Laiste · 02/06/2018 17:37

I had cones outside my house for a day last week as we had a grabber lorry coming and a delivery of bricks turning up. If someone had squeezed themselves in there i'd have asked for the bricks to be delivered on the top of the bloody car!

Mind your own fucking business!

AllMYSmellySocks · 02/06/2018 17:38

If they're expecting a delivery or they're going to be moving something heavy it's fine and you'd be majorly petty to move them. If they just do it everyday then yes that's ridiculous.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/06/2018 17:45

I once had a neighbour who painted a white line around his car, directly in front of his house. A bit like the disabled bays, but without any wording to suggest that it was reserved for anyone specific.

It was surprisingly effective - I very rarely saw anyone parked on that spot. It didn't bother me as I didn't have a car, and I felt slightly sorry for him as he had been living there all his life and had found himself to be almost the only person on the street who wasn't a student.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 02/06/2018 18:16

I just move them. You can't cone off sections of the public highway for your own personal use.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/06/2018 18:27

Just checked on street View and CF former neighbour is clearly still at it!

Where I used to live was next to a high street. Other streets had restricted parking and the car park next to use was pay and display so we had a lot of people parking on our small street with no thought about residents. Multiple people would put comes out to stop it. I moved comes routinely to park. Had jip from some but refused to engage with, except once to point out that I knew where they lived if they chose to do the damage to the car they threatened and police would be called. It used to piss me off that some thought they were more entitled to park on the street than others. I think the council eventually added restricted parking because it became such a problem but id moved by that point.

Andrewofgg · 02/06/2018 19:08

Unless there is a sign up suggesting it's a one-off (funeral, big delivery) I move them onto the pavement.

ALongHardWinter · 02/06/2018 19:29

There's a bloke down my road who does this every time he goes out in his car. I don't think anything has ever been said to him. Mind you,I thought he was a bit odd ever since I overheard him in the local shop saying that he was glad to see that the council had got rid of the bottle bank and paper recycling bank that was on the green near his house. It was the only place that was within walking distance for me to get rid of my recycling.

19lottie82 · 02/06/2018 19:32

It depends. If you’re waiting for a large delivery ect, fine. If you’re doing it just to reserve a private parking space on a public road, not fine.

BorchesterTowers · 02/06/2018 19:39

I've done that when I've had a skip or a removals van coming.

I don't drive, don't own a car, don't use up those precious resources of space and oil, don't pollute the world by driving, so the one or two times a year I need to reserve a space I do it with cones, rather than an actual car. I leave a note and let my neighbours know.

It's quite OK if it's give & take about urban space.

NeedsAsockamnesty · 02/06/2018 19:40

I have cones outside mine lots usually for skips and stuff like that.

I pay for it to happen and they are put down by the LA they don’t also put signs, it’s just the cones.

Nectarines · 02/06/2018 20:13

Avocados... I feel as if I recognise that street from my own student days. North East by any chance?

ParentInCharge · 02/06/2018 20:13

@DustyMaiden our local undertakers does that too. But they're black and white. They look quite... tasteful and respectful for some reason.
Which is nice.

BrilliantDarling · 02/06/2018 20:47

Do sit down dear and try get a grip.

AvocadosBeforeMortgages · 02/06/2018 20:48

@Nectarines North West! Just another red brick terraced road tbh, nothing special
