AIBU to not understand the fascination with slime?

I know kids can go through phases of liking the in things! But what is going on with the Slime fascination at the moment??

My DSD spent nearly £20 of her pocket money the other day to buy ingredients to make her own slime. Am I unreasonable think that is a massive waste of money?

When I was a kid we spent money on pogs and tamagotchi’s so I can understand the fascination of liking the in thing but those things had points to them. But I just don’t see the point in slime?

You're not 11.

Though I'm 33 and watch some slime videos on YouTube.... But then again, I was never into pogs.

e1y1 · 31/05/2018 16:03

Haha I know, it’s been ongoing a while.

Was part of the £20 on Tide detergent by any chance? 🤣

It's fun to make and is a bit gross/cool/even pretty (colour changing, glitter etc). Messy play for older kids. When they're making their own, it's like a chemistry lesson of sorts. At the very least it's creative. Worse things to spend your money on!

roboticmom · 31/05/2018 16:04

So far as I can see the point is to sit there and poke it. After several failed attempts at making it, my DD buys it off her friends.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 31/05/2018 16:04

My dd got a slime making kit for her birthday it's pretty cool!

Jenny0787 · 31/05/2018 16:04

Ok to be fair my mum did say that pogs and tamagotchis were a waste of money when I was 11!

YA so NBU! I have just unblocked sink and found empty hand wash containers!

Jenny0787 · 31/05/2018 16:07

E1y1 contact lense solution and shaving cream! Along with PVA glue and food colouring!

My DSD and her friend took all of her fathers shaving cream the other day, after they used up their own supply! He now uses shaving cream and a brush a bit like my grandad used to use!

I LOVED my Tamagothchi, I cried the place down when I water damaged my little mate.

Kids today thanks to iPhones etc will never know how amazing it was to feel like you were solely responsible for the life of a digital pet.

Oops :)

My friend's 9 year old DD is absolutely hooked on making slime. It's all she does outside school at the moment. It does seem a bit like chemistry, but you'd think they would get bored after a bit. She seems to make a different recipe every day and the amount of glue that's come through the post is unreal. I don't get it, but then again we did all have crazes when we were kids. Seems harmless enough.

Jenny0787 · 31/05/2018 16:12

I cried when my first tamagotchi died! I was a bit of a softie though! Lol, loved pogs and there was even a yoyo phase when I was younger! Before that I liked football stickers.

I do remember my mum and grandparents shaking their heads when I spent my £1.25 pocket money on this stuff though!

There's a craze on watching slime videos too.

And kinetic sand videos. And videos of people slicing up soap, melting crayons, smushing oil paint.....Google ASMR.

e1y1 · 31/05/2018 16:16

Ha ha oh how I remember the £1.25 pocket money, those where the days, I remember feeling really flush on the occasion I got £2 for sweets.

Can’t hardly buy a loaf of branded bread for that now :(

I wasn’t massively in to Pogs but did have some, and yes the light up spongy yo-yos were everywhere.

e1y1 · 31/05/2018 16:17

*spinny

Jenny0787 · 31/05/2018 16:19

E1y1 - I did that the other day, gave my DSD £1 and told her not to spend it all at once! She was not impressed!

Thanks for the idea, I'll be making some with my 3 y.o. Just need to buy some more contact lens solution as I'm nearly out.

CheshireChat · 31/05/2018 16:49

I'm a big kid anyway Wink. We made these yesterday.

Haha. My Great grandma said that, we always got a £1 every time we saw her can hear her now “spend half, save half”

chaplin1409 · 31/05/2018 16:52

My dd loves making slime. She spends ages making it, researching it and watching u tube videos of other people making it. She is having a sleep over for her 12th birthday and they are all goibg to make slime in the morning. I don't see the fascination but I'm not a kid.

Jenny0787 · 31/05/2018 17:13

That looks good enough to eat! Haha.

Should've said- they're actually rainbow donuts (mini ones). Definitely edible Cake.
