to refuse to drive DPs car?

DP has a meeting in London today. He's parked at ASDA and the meeting has gone on longer than expected. He's phoned me and asked me to drive his car to a different car park so he doesn't get a ticket.

I've said no. My reasons being:
a) I drive an automatic, have only been driving for a year and don't feel comfortable reverting back to manual after so long of not driving one
b) I'm not insured on his car so could end up in trouble for driving it if I did for some reason get pulled over. I work in law enforcement and would also likely lose my job.
c) his car is falling apart and it's likely it's going to conk out any day. Imagine it breaking down and me having to explain why I'm driving it with no license.

Apparently because I've said no, it's my fault he's likely going to get a ticket.

AIBU to refuse to drive his car and think that if he gets a ticket that's his problem?

OP never said she passed in an auto, she said she didn't want to revert to a manual.

Pomegranate6 · 31/05/2018 12:47

@SluttyButty I passed my test in a manual I just haven't driven one for a while

If you're over 25 you're probably covered to drive someone else's car, but if you're not happy doing it then that's that isn't it. Don't put yourself in a situation on the road where you feel you might be a danger to other people.

e1y1 · 31/05/2018 12:48

but just to confirm if you have your own policy on your own car then you’re usually always insured to drive anyone else’s car third party (with their permission). It’s a pretty standard feature when you take out a policy

www.confused.com/car-insurance/guides/driving-other-cars-on-your-car-insurance#

I’m full comp in my car, but my insurance specifically states that no one else is allowed to drive my car, no matter what insurance they have. In cases of emergency, the call centre must be called first (I don’t know how that’d work in an emergency tbf).

Only me and DH can drive it.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 31/05/2018 12:50

The Law of the Sod says that a runaway wagon/ large dog/ small child will cause you to have an accident.

And you will be uninsured.

LoniceraJaponica · 31/05/2018 12:50

No, it's his fault if he gets a ticket. Driving without insurance is illegal, and an offence that the police take very seriously.

PinkHeart5914 · 31/05/2018 12:58

Your not insured so that’s the end of it. Only a stupid idiot drives a car they are not insured too

You also don’t feel comfortable driving a manual

Meetings run over all the time maybe he should of parked somewhere more appropriate

supersop60 · 31/05/2018 12:59

No it won't be your fault if he gets a ticket - it will be his for being a CF and using free supermarket parking. They have time limits for a reason.

Do not break the law to save him the inconvenience.
A parking charge does not affect your life in any way except to make you poorer.
A driving conviction (no insurance) will have quite a serious impact on points, future insurance etc.

Chewbecca · 31/05/2018 12:59

Most policies allow you to drive other cars 3rd party.

Assuming I was insured, I'd move it for my DH tbh.

MiggeldyHiggins · 31/05/2018 13:00

Lots don't.

Sirzy · 31/05/2018 13:01

The third party thing only tends to be for experienced drivers doesn’t it?

FASH84 · 31/05/2018 13:04

The lack of insurance is the key here, most new drivers don't have third party cover and driving without could have a much bigger impact than a poxy fine. He is unreasonable and should have paid for parking rather than leaving his car in a supermarket when he's not even shopping there

Pomegranate6 · 31/05/2018 13:04

@Chewbecca you'd drive across a city you don't know (London) feeling completely out of your depth and not comfortable in a manual? I think that's irresponsible.

A4710Rider · 31/05/2018 13:05

Does ASDA actually police their car park. Best thing to do is get him to phone them explain he's been delayed, or you can pop in and have a word with door security. They will be fine about it.

Sebbies · 31/05/2018 13:06

There are worse things that can happen than getting a parking ticket. Such as being caught driving with no insurance...

Chewbecca · 31/05/2018 13:06

I was assuming it was your local Asda?

Chewbecca · 31/05/2018 13:06

How far are you considering driving it?

eppingforests · 31/05/2018 13:08

I got a £40 fine last year parking at Asda Brighton Marina. First I knew was when a fine and photo of my car came through the post.

TitZillas · 31/05/2018 13:08

Can you not pay to extend the parking time at Asda? Or should I say, can your DH pay you to get him a new parking ticket?

Racecardriver · 31/05/2018 13:08

Why can't he just call up your insurer and get you insured?

Pomegranate6 · 31/05/2018 13:09

I don't think the third party thing is a given, otherwise I wouldn't have had to pay an extra £70 to have my brother third party insured on my car? Fairly sure I'm not insured as I've only been driving for a year. I believe in my policy it says I can drive uninsured for a short distance in the case of an emergency.

OP posts:
Pomegranate6 · 31/05/2018 13:10

@A4710Rider it's ANPR which is fairly automatic and run by an external company. Fairly sure their security won't care!

OP posts:
Pippylou · 31/05/2018 13:10

The "can drive other cars 3rd party" thing isn't true anymore, it's totally dependent on your insurance T & Cs and I would get yours out and check.

This is the current law regarding driving without insurance. Point DP to this...

www.gov.uk/vehicle-insurance/driving-without-insurance

BusterTheBulldog · 31/05/2018 13:10

You’d be fine as soon as you’re in the manual, it’s just a reflex that comes back.

How are you not named drivers on each other’s cars though? Seems really odd, it’s useful to do for situations exactly like this

Pomegranate6 · 31/05/2018 13:10

@Chewbecca I'm not considering driving it at all!
