To ask about your low calorie snacks?

TheShapeOfEwe · 30/05/2018 17:27

I'm calorie counting to lose weight and generally managing fine except that I feel hungry all the time until I've had my evening meal, and it's eroding my willpower!

I think I need better low calorie snacks to fill me up - does anyone have any suggestions for something satisfying and filling that's not more than about 120 calories?

Thank you!

Multitask crisps like Quakers, wotsits are often under 100kcal. Little bags of popcorn, I really like the proper corn almond and peanut popcorn.
Crudites
Rice cakes - there are really nice marmite ones if you like marmite or if not just salted with a dash of peanut butter.
Slice of wholemeal toast (of the small loaves)
Egg
Cheese - a babybel or cheese triangle
Falafel
Preroasted chicken breast
Nuts
Fruit of course - berried and things I really like
Plain natural yoghurt
Glass of milk

I also always have a cup of tea if I am feeling hungry first, either normal tea or lemon and ginger type tea depending on the time or whether I've got milk left (I always measure out my milk at the start of the day so i don't end up having loads in my tea/coffee) and then a snack if I still feel hungry afterwards as sometimes it's but the desire for something nice rather than hunger.

A small bag of butterkist popcorn is 79 calories

A rice cake with some cream cheese on and a few leaves of basil

Those warburton thins, they’re 100 calories for the two sides so just have one with a spread you enjoy

Chocolate fix: rice cake with some chocolate spread

A stick of celery with some peanut butter spread on

Those mini boxes of raisins

A banana

An apple and a clementine

Those Alpro dessert pots you find in the ambient free from aisle: vanilla, dark or milk chocolate, caramel, coconut, all around 100 calories

Hartley sugar free jelly pots are 6 calories

An oat cake or two with herb pate and a halved cherry tomato

A few gherkins from the jar, a sixth of a large jar is only 12 calories!

A little ramekin dish with microwaved from frozen mixed berries and a few almonds, feels very decadent

A small glass of juice

Kallo do these absolutely gorgeous mini rice cakes with dark chocolate, 100ish calories for the pack of six

Tesco cheapest own brand fruit and nut or chocolate chip cereal bars

Ice pops. Co op fruity twirly lollies are only 61 calories

An oat cake or rice cake with some chutney and a sliver of cheese

I just went back through my fitness pal diary for those! Preparation is key, have them in the house and decide each night which snacks you’ll have the following day and when. And always drink a large glass or two of water before eating them. Makes them more filling.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 30/05/2018 17:59

I freeze 200g of grapes and eat them like sweeties they taste like little slushies and take ages to eat. 138 cals so smaller portion if you want.

I also make oat "cookies" with mashed banana, porridge oats, 1 egg, skimmed milk and raisins.very filling and about 127 cals each.

TheRoadLessRocky · 30/05/2018 18:10

I struggle with this too and often resort to those 10cal jellies and cans of diet coke.

Also, the co-op do these little snack packs of roasted beans and peas that are Chinese spice flavoured. One pack has about 110 calories in. They're tasty and protein based so quite good to feel a bit full.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 30/05/2018 18:15

Ooh my favourite one:

Those warburton thins: spread with some margarine or butter thinly. Then slice a tomato very very thinly and lay on top of the bread, grind some cracked black pepper all over it and shove it under the grill until it’s toasted.

Seriously one of the nicest meals I’ve ever eaten, I have it all the time! And it’s probably about 120 calories, max 150 depending on your butter spreading. If you want to be sure, just do one do the halves.

GinUser · 30/05/2018 18:21

I do not and never have snacked.
I will be 60 this year.
You really need to cut back on food. Only then will you be able to recognise if you are actually hungry or not.
You also need to be able to distinguish between hunger and thirst.
If you must "snack" please try carrot or celery, where you do need to chew properly to start digestion.

Nothing wrong with that!

Diet Coke is often maligned and I don’t massively enjoy it but it does hit the spot when you’re hungry but know you shouldn’t eat anything else, it’s the carbonation and sweetened and volume of it I think. I only drink it if I’m already getting 2-3l of water per day and most of the time when I’m hungry like that I’ll just drink a couple of tap waters, but Diet Coke is a good option if you’re trying to count calories.

The jellies are great too!

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 18:24

TittyGolightly-what sort of meals do you eat that snacks you to feel full on 800 calories?
I'm vegetarian too, and would love to have some ideas!

Today:

14:00 - 120g Full fat Greek yogurt, 80g frozen berries, 6g ground flaxseed
Dinner will be butternut squash and chickpea curry with cauliflower rice. Matchbox sized piece of cheese

2 x real coffee with double cream.

Will be about 800cals.

Fat is the answer. Not sweet things or sugary things or crackers things or low calorie yogurt.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 30/05/2018 18:24

There’s nothing wrong with snacking, Gin, so perhaps save the lecture for another OP who is actually asking for thoughts on the benefits of snacking and not this OP who is asking for snack ideas Hmm

Snacks can be a good way of not letting yourself get so ravenous you emotionally binge eat or overeat at your next meal, and plenty of people advise regular small meals over three large ones.

Snacking is only a problem if you’re eating the wrong stuff and it’s taking you over your calorie requirements for the day and you’re gaining weight

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 18:25

Nothing wrong with that!

Scientific findings relating to insulin disagree with you.

I wish I could eat like that Titty but I'd be so hungry by 2pm I'd most likely gorge on carbs Sad. Do you not feel faint not eating until 2pm?

PhyllisWig · 30/05/2018 18:30

Aldi do little packs of nuts only in single serving sizes of 130ish cals and they are only 29p so a bargain.

Those packs of cheese you get to go in lunchboxes - cathedral city mature are good I found. Or baby bel maybe.

Boiled eggs. Love a boiled egg.

WalkingOnAFlashlightBeam · 30/05/2018 18:30

Are you seriously suggesting that a couple of cans of Diet Coke per week is going to have a detrimental effect on my health?

Aaaarrrrrggggghhhhhhh

Thank you for this very enlightening response 😂

PhyllisWig · 30/05/2018 18:33

Goodbyeeeee I've done the same programme as titty and no, not once you're into it. I do it as a kind of reset/food holiday plan as I am a stress eater and things creep up if I'm not careful. I often feel really good on it. I do immediately regain a few lbs once I stop though!

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 18:33

I generally eat somewhere between 12pm and 2pm. I’m a night owl (who has to get up at 6:30am for work 😩) and the thought of eating before then makes me feel sick.

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 18:33

Kicking carbs is hard but so worth it.

Deshasafraisy · 30/05/2018 18:34

Drink tons of water.

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 18:35

Are you seriously suggesting that a couple of cans of Diet Coke per week is going to have a detrimental effect on my health?

It could. It’s sweet, so your body responds as if it is sugar. It isn’t. Frequent insulin release can cause issues.

There’s also some evidence that carbonation can be problematic for bones (something to do with phosphorus I think).

mintmagnummm · 30/05/2018 19:00

Watching with interest....

goodbyeeee · 30/05/2018 20:24

Thanks Phyllis and Titty.

I've tried low/no carb and had some success until a stressful life event intervened and I have been hitting the refined carbs a bit hard ever since.

I'm going to try again after 1/2 term. I found it very hard to go no carb at all but was able to reduce them by having, say, just a spoonful of rice and then a massive pile of kale/vegetables. I also persuaded DP to switch to wholewheat pasta and brown rice so at least when I do have them they're not the refined type.

Sorry for the hijack OP.

musicinthe00ssucks · 30/05/2018 20:35

Titty do you have PCOS? Your diet seems geared towards low GI

noeffingidea · 30/05/2018 20:43

Fruit.
Low fat yoghurt
Sllice of toast with jam
Cup of coffee (I like those ones in a sachet).
If I didn't control myself I would eat a lot of crisps and savoury snacks like mini cheddars, because thats what I'm really into.

TittyGolightly · 30/05/2018 20:52
