To think four extra bank holidays would be a bad thing

Labour is promising four extra bank holidays if they're elected.

Which would be great, but I'm thinking the statutory holiday allowance will remain the same (28 days) and those bank holidays will just come out of our entitlement Angry

So instead of having 8 days eaten up by bank holidays it will be 12 days (and only 16 days to book when you wish).

Not great for us retail workers but great for our sales!!

Wakemeuuuup · 29/05/2018 20:22

That was one of their promises in last years election. They didn't get in so don't worry about it

SmilingButClueless · 29/05/2018 20:24

As long as they aren’t all clustered around March / April / May. We need them more spread out!

OddBoots · 29/05/2018 20:24

I agree, I would prefer fewer of them if the annual allowance is kept the same.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 29/05/2018 20:24

I thought it wasn't 4 extra holidays they proposed, but rather one for each of the four member countries to celebrate their national days?

That would have been a nice development.

KanielOutis · 29/05/2018 20:24

Our end of the week part timers get to take their bank holiday allowance whenever they like. It's only Monday workers who have stipulation on when they can take leave.

happypoobum · 29/05/2018 20:25

It depends on what your contract says. If it says 28 days plus bank/public holidays then you would get the extra.

UK workers have the fewest public holidays in Europe. We should definitely have more!!!

SwimmingKaren · 29/05/2018 20:26

I’d love a few extra bank holidays even though I have to pay the flexi back at work. It’s worth it for less Monday mornings. Grin

DorothyGarrod · 29/05/2018 20:27

Labour would be better off taking a firm line on Brexit - otherwise we will all be on a permanent holiday from the lack of jobs.

AlonsoTigerHeart · 29/05/2018 20:27

Most people I know have to work bank holidays anyway

happypoobum · 29/05/2018 20:27

The days would be 17 March, 30 Nov, 23 April and 1 March.

I don't care when they are, I want them all!!!!

ginghambox · 29/05/2018 20:28

2 in March, 1 in April and 1 in November. No doubt the will change their minds when they realize it would reduce GDP by £10billion every year.

GreyGardens88 · 29/05/2018 20:30

We need more in the summer

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 29/05/2018 20:30

It would only be one extra each year, not 4!

ClashCityRocker · 29/05/2018 20:33

Hmm, we really don't need any more bank holidays in March/April.

There's always two in late March or April and then two in May.

If I was in charge, I'd have one at the beginning of February, one at the end of june, one in october and one in early december.

But I don't feel strongly about it either way.

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 29/05/2018 20:36

As someone on another thread said, Bank Holidays are a real pain when you've got an event which happens on a fixed day every week. You're forever missing Mondays and having to play catch-up. And no, it isn't possible to change the day.

QuinquiremeOfNineveh · 29/05/2018 20:39

And how would you fit St George's Day in around Easter and May Day? You could be having BH's on successive weeks over three weeks.

barleyfive · 29/05/2018 20:40

It depends on how your leave allowance works, I get 30 days annual leave and then all bank holidays on top of that; but it seems uneccessary and I can see how small businesses would struggle with the burden of more bank holidays. Why don't they try to create a fairer baseline on annual leave allowances? Shift workers would also benefit!

LakieLady · 29/05/2018 20:50

We definitely need more! I agree they should be added to the 28 days min leave though. Another four would be perfect.

I'd spread them about a bit more, too. Maybe one in late June/early July (summer solstice, Wimbledon semi-finals?) one in October or early November (Trafalgar Day or possibly Guy Fawkes), one between Christmas and Easter (Valentine's Day?) and maybe an extra one in August, on my birthday.

CardinalSin · 29/05/2018 20:59

More bank Holidays would be lovely, but it does rather make me feel that Labour are getting a bit desperate to come up with something attractive. Corbyn is an electoral disaster, and their lack of opposition to Brexit, particularly this government's appalling mis-handling of it, is showing them up to be idealogically bereft.

ForalltheSaints · 29/05/2018 21:16

I'd get rid of December 28th or January 2nd/3rd if Christmas/New Year's Day fall on a weekend, which gives one extra day on average, and have a day to remember those who have died in war (probably November 11th).

The four days were actually only one, depending where you lived. So 1 March in Wales, for example.
