To think playgroups shouldn't give out junk food?

I go to one may be once a fortnight. The standard snack is fruit plus juice (don't agree with the juice) but there is always other shit 'just this once'. Chocolate, cake, iced biscuits today...

This is publicly funded.

It's a nice group but the shit food is putting me off.

Am I being precious?

Will be happily smug and judgemental while DS enjoys a full set of teeth, normal BMI and a lack of childhood onset diabetes

I look forward to your thread when he's 13 and buying chocolate for breakfast on the way to school...

Steeley113 · 29/05/2018 15:37

Most toddler groups I go to range from free-£3... I get 2-3 hours of my toddler entertained and socialising while I get a hot cup of tea and a chat with some adults. Honestly, if the worst that’s happening is them offering a biscuit then I’ll happily accept that.

BrutusMcDogface · 29/05/2018 15:38

🙄

JJS888 · 29/05/2018 15:38

Don't think I'm going back. Will be happily smug and judgemental while DS enjoys a full set of teeth, normal BMI and a lack of childhood onset diabetes.

Oh God, we all cringe looking back on those days 😂 by the time you get to no 3 the cat is eating their pizza off their plate. Nobidy gets diabetes frim a biscuit at playgroup. No wonder so many kids are malnourished in middle class families.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 29/05/2018 15:39

Perhaps become involved in running the playgroup? Then you can bring change about from the inside.

Hillarious · 29/05/2018 15:39

Speaking from experience, I found that good dental hygiene and lots of playing, walking, cycling, climbing helped offset the occasional biscuit at playgroup when the kids were younger.

ManchesterGin · 29/05/2018 15:42

Their playgroup. Their choice. Your choice not to go if it doesn’t fit with your parenting choices.

It’s one biscuit a week. I’m 99% sure your child is going to come into contact with more harmful things over the course of his childhood.

ineedabagformyhippo · 29/05/2018 15:43

YANBU, I dislike that my local (otherwise lovely) playgroup offers squash as an option. I don't give my children squash if I can help it. They do give fruit as the snack though which is great. I'm surprised a publicly funded group gives biscuits/cake, it's just unnecessary at a playgroup. But then I'm not a big fan of snacking for DC in general

Why bother posting this if you're just going to get incredibly defensive and bizarre about it? If you don't actually want an opinion, then don't post it in the AIBU forum. People can be so odd.

Isadora2007 · 29/05/2018 15:45

What the PP said about asking if they want some help running the group. You can then make some healthy choice suggestions and perhaps influence for the better as some people don’t think daily snacks like that are actually bad for their children. And they’re not horrible people, just not educated in these issues.
Removal of decayed baby teeth is one of the leading reasons for children needing general anaesthetics, so it is a major issue. But buying fresh fruit and preparing it takes longer than grabbing some snacks from the shop on the way to the playgroup so I would offer help in order to appreciate the work that goes into running these groups- not just go in criticising.

YouAreNotImportant · 29/05/2018 15:46

You sound like fun.

ineedabagformyhippo · 29/05/2018 15:47

And as for the pp comment about middle class children being malnourished, hilarious, what on earth is that based on?!

MysweetAudrina · 29/05/2018 15:48

He wouldn't eat his lunch after having an iced biscuit. If I thought an iced biscuit would put me off my lunch I would have one every day.

When you go into a Cafe with him do you don't let him have whatever is on display so can you not just apply the same rules at play group. it's a choice, either let him have it or don't but don't expect others not to feel the same. Most sane people would have no issue with their child having an iced biscuit at a playgroup.

Celebelly · 29/05/2018 15:49

God, now I really want a cheap iced biscuit. Or one of those eclair things with the fake cream and the pink icing.

BustopherJones · 29/05/2018 15:49

Our children’s centres often include snack time, which is just fruit and water. I appreciate not all children have the best diet, but I’m always remembering the fruit at the last time, and the time allotted to it isn’t enough for the children to actually eat it after they’ve all queues up to wash their hands.

Essentially, I buy the fruit we enjoy, Dd will eat it very happily. I then take it to playgroup, where the other parents have brought the fruit their children like. We then put it all together and share it out, so the children get a bowl of fruit they’ll enjoy a bit less. They valiantly tuck in, and then are immediately told to hurry up it’s time for singing, so all sit down to song nursery rhymes with mouths full of fruit still so the parents do all the singing.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 15:50

I’m sure the playgroup leaders are going to be gutted you’re not going back, OP.

confusedlittleone · 29/05/2018 15:51

You must be great at parties 😂

AlonsoTigerHeart · 29/05/2018 15:51

When i did toddker groups with ds1 (now 15) the kids had squash, toast with and one of these bad boys

gemsparkle84 · 29/05/2018 15:52

Children (and adults) get over weight or "obese", lose their teeth and get chronic illness' such as diabetes for lots of different reasons other than the fact they eat a biscuit once (or even 5 times) a week. Some people - including children are on medication or have disabilities which can cause weight gain. Stop being so judgemental and open your eyes. A biscuit and a cup of juice won't harm anyone. Making an issue of it will. I'd rather my child had a good relationship with food than grew up obsessing about it.

Celebelly · 29/05/2018 15:54

Does anyone remember Party Rings? I LOVED those at parties. I found them in a shop recently and had to buy them. Oh and Iced Gems! A wee pack of Iced Gems does nicely.

Tomorrowillbeachicken · 29/05/2018 15:57

Just don’t eat it then and don’t let your kids eat it.
