I hate Surrey

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

I know the "type" the OP means. However you will find exactly the same vacuous conversations in cafés around the country in locations like Harrogate, Bath, Clifton in Bristol, Stamford, Canterbury... It's the way some social groups find things in common!

I don't live in Surrey, I have clients there though and spend quite a bit of time driving around it, everywhere. The transport links (M3, M25) are horrendous generally because they're congested and accidents happen often causing delays.

I've seen some nice houses in some not so nice areas (in my opinion) and some not so nice houses seemingly 'plonked' in what I consider are nice areas. I'm sure I haven't seen all the residential areas but I don't think the area deserves its hype. London proximity is just geography and I don't think London's where I would live either. The people I meet are nice enough, nothing twattish or greedy about them so as you'd surmise OP, you're being a bit of a twat yourself with your first post but then you meant to... being needy, hence the goady comment to drag them all in, yes?

I would pick Thame over anywhere in Surrey or London. Berkshire is lovely and the transport links are better.

What is interesting about this thread though is the number of posters who've been 'prickled' by the sweeping generalisations. I never see that sort of protest for trashy threads where the same old posters make generally awful and obnoxious comments about people they don't even know.

BlueBug45 · 29/05/2018 13:56

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I don't find the M3 congested however the M4 is congested both damn ways to and from Reading, and the M25 is a well-known joke. I frequently actually end up using A roads then the M3 instead of the M4 if possible as it is quicker.

Some of the other transport links into and out from Berkshire are as bad as those in Surrey.

Kursk · 29/05/2018 14:02

All my family live in Surry. I hate it too. That whole area is a depressing urban sprawl that it basically London.

Whenever we have to visit DH says we are going to Mordor.

SPARKS17 · 29/05/2018 14:09

We moved away from a leafy bit of Surrey 18 months ago and I bloody miss it. Didn't realise quite how nice "naice" it was until we left! If I could have the house we have now back where we used to live I would swap it in an instant.

Yes everyone is obsessed with house prices for a reason!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/05/2018 14:12

BlueBug, I agree that it's better than the M25 as I'm not on it so long, but it's up there with my least favourite routes because of congestion. I'm guilty of following my satnav's instructions though and perhaps I should take a leaf out of your book and look for the faster, less congested A roads. I do that in Berkshire and perhaps that's why I think the transport system is better?

The M4 going into Central London is just motorway misery... Urgh.

woder · 29/05/2018 14:14

I'm well posh, living in Surrey an' all, but the Cotswolds are posher. I actually parked next to a woman in a Range Rover in a small Cotswold town and her children were called Tarquin and Arabella.

darklady64 · 29/05/2018 14:15

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I guess no-one likes their home turf being maligned - especially when all we've done wrong was to be born there! Smile

Kursk there is plenty of urban sprawl, but have you been out to Box Hill/Shere/Peaslake? Some bits are more like the Shire than Mordor.

And have to be with those complaining about the traffic (and there are speed cameras which I may, or may not, have had first hand experience of - hem hem)

SoupDragon · 29/05/2018 14:16

That whole area is a depressing urban sprawl that it basically London.

That isn’t Surrey.

PenCobSwan · 29/05/2018 14:16

I was born in a Surrey village. We lived in a flat over a shop. We only moved when my parents purchased their semi-detached bog standard suburban house a few miles away.

Stock Broker belt ? I wouldn't know. Neither would any of the Surrey kids who attended the same Surrey schools as me.

TheSmallClangerWhistlesAgain · 29/05/2018 14:19

People who bang on about house prices are boring in the extreme wherever they come from.

I can understand how you've got a negative association in your head with Surrey if you've experienced it there.

Yes I have visited Box Hill. My family live in the Guildford area. It still feels like living in London to me. There is no space, it’s noisy and there are people everywhere

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 14:26

Is it really posh to drive a Range Rover in the Cotswolds and have DC called Tarquin and Arabella? Or is it just blingy?

MaMisled · 29/05/2018 14:26

I was born and raised in a little Surrey village. Couldn't wait to escape at 17.

Unfinishedkitchen · 29/05/2018 14:26

Calling your kid Tarquin isn’t posh it’s try hard with money trying to mimic what they think is posh. I’ve never met a genuinely upper class person called Tarquin. Matthew, David, Gordon, Alexander. Andrew and other timelesss classic names but never a Tarquin. Too obvious.

Kettlepotblack · 29/05/2018 14:31

Urban sprawl?

What, because there are towns in Surrey it's slagged off for being urban sprawl? Eh?

Guildford is way too congested for me now but it's hardly 'Urban Sprawl'!

Have you visited the South Downs, Haslemere area? Godalming? The rolling Surrey countryside between Reigate and Dorking around Box Hill? Not just Box Hill itself? As a pp said, villages such as Shere (The Holiday anyone?!) Its spectacular and in parts is about as chocolate-boxy as and picturesque you can get.

I'm starting to feel a bit defensive about my beautiful county now!

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 14:31

Unfinished - we joke that the main entrance criterion for our DC’s school is a trad first name - all the DC seemingly are Matthew, Alexander, Alice, Charlotte and that ilk.

SluttyButty · 29/05/2018 14:41

There are lots of wannabe upper class in the Cotswolds driving round in their RR, speaking in ridiculous accents whilst calling their little dears with try hard names.

Dd and me just love people watching Grin

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/05/2018 14:42

Nobody 'posh' is called Tarquin.

That1950sMum · 29/05/2018 14:46

This is Leith Hill near Dorking in Surrey.

As you can see, it is hideous, urban sprawl Grin

I hate Surrey
gillybeanz · 29/05/2018 14:51

I don't think I'd like it either.
I call people in surrey, some are nice, lovely and down to earth. The rest are arse holes who think they are so important, snobby, and downright nasty.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/05/2018 14:52

darklady... understood! That's my point really, some people are maligned just by dint of being born, for existing... drives me mad.

I think all places have good and bad points but when we're born and/or grow up there, or live there, it's home and there's no place like it. :)

OP was just being a needy, goady fucker. Worked though, didn't it. Saddo.

Kettlepotblack · 29/05/2018 14:53

Yes and here's the urban sprawl just up the road from me!

I hate Surrey
