I hate Surrey

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 08:14

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

loads of people live in surrey because they can't afford London and the commute is quick and not too expensive. yes, housprices are a topic of conversation because loads of houses are unaffordable for normal people. Same in all the counties around london i would say

MissMoneyPlant · 29/05/2018 10:21

I think you get the same attitude amongst the whole economic spectrum, it's just that people don't like it when these people actually have money!

Plenty of poorer people seem to be equally obsessed with having the latest thing, dressing in a certain way, expecting others to fit their narrow views of what to aspire for... just that these things will be slightly different and/or cheaper than in Surrey. It's just crappy narrow-minded consumerism, at different economic levels.

Donthugmeimscared · 29/05/2018 10:21

I live in Surrey on a council estate. It's definetly not all house prices and schools here but then again I've heard people from the posher part of town saying we should have all been shot at birth or have our houses burnt down as we are a scar on their lovely little town. Not to sure why as it's very quiet here. But they seem to think it's like something from shameless.

The80sweregreat · 29/05/2018 10:23

Try living in Essex sometimes.
Surrey is another world in comparison. I love a day trip to Surrey. See how the other half live.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 10:24

Got any evidence for that? The commute to London Waterloo from my train station (Hounslow Loop) is over an hour as there are no fast trains.

We moved here as it’s close to both Heathrow and Gatwick for business travel.

Kettlepotblack · 29/05/2018 10:25

It's true, user149.

It's the epitome of First World problems at times. I've lived here a long time but I've been around the block too and had my fair share of times and experiences that I hope has humbled me. Not so for many around here. Especially the ex -London types.

'I'm in a dilemma as now as I'm going to need the cleaner for x amount more hours, I have three children and the house is so big I'm far too busy but she isn't available!'

My cleaner comes three times a week, I don't work and have children, how can I possible have the time to clean'?

'I'm taking Arabella to a specialist for advice about her attitude and behaviour and paying £100 per hour - she is three years old and isn't doing what I ask first time'

'We're going to have to put the extension off our already extortionately huge house, for a year - we're taking Hugo out of the village school and going private as he's simply not getting on with his phonics and has made friends with undesirable children'- first half term of reception.

'I'm starting potty training with my youngest, I've bought £100 worth of equipment'

These are just some of the conversations I've been involved in recent weeks.

It's filled with a certain type of mum who over-fetishes and over obsesses over every tiny little detail of her children, believing that everything has to be seen to be 100% perfect or life is not worth living - because she can.

LighthouseSouth · 29/05/2018 10:25

You're blaming the whole area for your sister?

Gosh, travel sure broadened your mind.

nursy1 · 29/05/2018 10:26

I don’t like Surrey either, or most of the Home Counties. Lived briefly in Purley then years commuting in to London. Totally agree with your analysis op. I found a few people I liked but it took so many horrible parties clutching a glass of wine discussing House prices/ schools/ voting Conservative. It’s like group think!

chickenowner · 29/05/2018 10:31

It's not just in Surrey where people obsess about house prices and schools!

Although your post reminded me of the only time I visited Surrey, many years ago with a now ex-bf.

I'm from the Midlands and one of his friends said to me 'When I heard you were from the North I thought you would have an accent, but actually you speak quite well'.

Grin

And the thing is, she thought she was being nice!!

SadieHH · 29/05/2018 10:34

There are wankers in every county, as this thread is showing perfectly. Yes, I was born in Surrey, I still live here. I live in a perfectly lovely part of it but I have a tiny house, don't drive a posh car, have been on one foreign holiday in 5 years (and a family member paid for it) and my kids go to the local state school. You need to look to your own family and friends if they're unpleasant. But then I guess twats attract twats...

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 10:35

Judging by the comments on here, none of the Surrey-haters have ever visited the arse-end of north-west Surrey where I live and work.

kettle - sounds like you need to broaden your friendship group.

That1950sMum · 29/05/2018 10:35

Surrey is a big county. I live in Surrey and don't recognise it from your description at all. I don't think I've ever had a discussion about house prices. I'm lucky that the town I live in has all good schools so no need to fuss about which one you get. I have made some very lovely, down to earth friends in Surrey.

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 10:38

kettle - oh the problems too much money and stuff create!

Kettlepotblack · 29/05/2018 10:39

Ha - not really my friends, just acquaintances from school etc.

That's kind my point. One thing I find is that is hard for me to connect with people round here at times because they have such a different outlook. People are perfectly pleasant, but have very different perspectives. It's hard to remember that is not the norm...I have to tell myself not to get caught up in all the bollocks, but it is such a way of life it's very easy to.

user1499173618 · 29/05/2018 10:46

It’s quite hard to find people whose values centre around intellectual experience and aesthetics. The world has seemingly been overrun with the semi educated and materialistic.

Titsywoo · 29/05/2018 10:46

Croydon is not actually in Surrey. The border is Warlingham, Whyteleafe, Coulsdon. I live in Surrey. I like it! But I've been brought up around here so maybe I'm a massive snob who only cares about house prices Grin. I don't think I am Wink

Yura · 29/05/2018 11:12

@ SuburbanRhonda everything around 45 min is quick if you work around waterloo. possible from
loads of surrey locations (have a look at commutefrom.com ). my commute is 1h15 min door to door, one of the shortest ones in my office. close to 2 airports for business travel
is also handy

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 11:20

yura

I’ve lived here for 15 years and use the train frequently, so I do know that if you change trains you can get into London Waterloo quicker. It’s just that where I’m from, in an area where 90% of the families I work with don’t even drive, never mind own a car, the direct route is longer. That’s because where I live in isn’t a commuter town.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 11:21

My heart bleeds for you Hmm

BeesAndMist · 29/05/2018 11:26

suburban it wasn’t really a short period of time - I lived there for nearly a decade. I just found it interesting how people earning the same wage, in the same job, for the same company prioritised buying a car over other things. Then I got sucked in and did it too. Im not saying it’s better or worse, I just found it interesting.

missmouse101 · 29/05/2018 11:28

Everything in life is relative.

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/05/2018 11:29

vile place , IMO.
I once went to 'Cobham and Stoke d'Abernon' and felt quite ill.
My ex friend who lives down there, used to put on full make up and plan her outfit ..for the school run.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/05/2018 11:35

Blimey, fourfriedchickens - I bet your ex-friend was pleased to get shot of someone as judgemental as you.

Yura · 29/05/2018 11:36

@SuburbanRhonda point taken :). my point was that even if looking at London commuters in commuter towns many are by no
means rich. just about able to afford a small terrace in surrey rather than a 2 bed shoebox appartment in a remotely decent part of london

FourFriedChickensDryWhiteToast · 29/05/2018 11:39

oh do you that as well then Suburban Rhonda...?..:)

You think I am judgemental? really? well this Surrey one came to my flat in Brighton and said 'so it is all lowlife who live here is it?'.

Meh.
