I hate Surrey

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 08:14

Is that unreasonable? I properly hate it.
I don't live there but most of my family do. Everyone seems to be obsessed with property prices, extensions and who's in the best bloody school! I even went to a cafe away from my family and the two tables close to us were discussing house prices and where the best catholic schools were.

Sorry if you live there but it just all seems to be greedy, self important twats. Am I wrong to make a sweeping statement about so many people? probably Wink

A lot of wankers in Surrey (I live here!!) my kids do not go private school for the very reason people hate surrey. Wouldn’t want my kids growing up to be self congratulating twats. Why do private schools breed this over confidence? Have they not realised that no one likes a cocky cunt?

Kettlepotblack · 29/05/2018 16:47

Ducking hell the generalisations on here get better and better Hmm

ToadOfSadness · 29/05/2018 16:48

As for the arseholes, there are many here, entitled arseholes with no consideration for others. And this is a sought after area, not by me though. I bloody hate it.

Areas of Surrey (like ones where the footballers live, ie: Cobham) are nice but full of identikit mums, all in the same uniform, long blonde hair in the latest cut, green parka/waxed jacket, tan Chelsea boots and jeans, same buggies, kids in Boden or designer wear. Not all of Surrey is like that, but what I did like was the fact that there are residents associations that actually care about the green belt and crimes and neighbours that don't pester you to get involved in their lives unless you want to.

I would not live in Cobham BTW.

Bugjune · 29/05/2018 16:50

Guildford is the smuggest town on earth, no idea why as it's a right shithole. Confused

MemyselfandIrene2 · 29/05/2018 16:50

Most of Surrey is pretty dull and over rated. Dorking and Reigate is like a retirement village I would have hated to grow up round there. Boring as....

Mississippilessly · 29/05/2018 16:52

I will never understand why it's OK to openly stereotype people in the south but not people in the north.

I grew up in Surrey, I don't recognise your description at all.

Bugjune · 29/05/2018 16:54

I live in Cheshire, sometimes referred to as 'the Surrey of the North'. It is also full of arseholes.

ScipioAfricanus · 29/05/2018 16:55

LizzieLongToes · 29/05/2018 16:57

I've lived there and hated it. Most people are obsessed with status and looking good, best schools or being completely alternative.
I hate having to go back there!

OP whereabouts were you referring to?

Pa1oma · 29/05/2018 17:01

Well OP, if you think people in Surrey are obsessed with house prices and schools, can I suggest you don't venture into Chelsea, Notting Hill, Putney or anywhere in this kind of zone as it will make Surrey look super chilled by comparison (it is much more diverse though). Plus, may I say, I go find the whole new-age vibe in Brighton a bit fake and tiring and the beach is just grey pebbles.

The80sweregreat · 29/05/2018 17:06

Essex isn’t full of Towie types at all but trying telling anyone this - it’s frustrating when places become as ‘being a certain way.’
It’s not true.

SEsofty · 29/05/2018 17:15

I now live in Surrey and so much more mixed than London.

Great school with wide mix of parents and the kids are mainly decked out in mountain warehouse clothing because outside in the rain playing all the time.

Much fewer conversations about house prices and private schools than in London

SadieHH · 29/05/2018 17:16

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe Epsom Downs. Very beautiful and peaceful.

TheDogsMother · 29/05/2018 17:42

That's a pretty sweeping generalisation and pretty insulting too. I've lived in many places across the county, the last being a really lovely village with a great community, no twats and surrounded by beautiful countryside. What's not to like ? I cannot honestly recall a house price conversation and most people really weren't bothered about flash cars (or gin). As other posters have said, can you imagine the response if you'd said this about another area but because it's Surrey it's fair game. Hmm

velvetcandy · 29/05/2018 17:59

Agreed with OP, surrey/west London born and breed here and can agree that pretty much every family member, every family friend, EVERYONE i know is or was obsessed with property and schools. More so the older generation like my parents freinds i have memories of family bbqs or parties where the convo is ALL about property prices and schools blah blah. I got so fed up with Surrey and so very glad we moved to the coast.

RosieRuby · 29/05/2018 18:22

I waa born and bred in Surrey and loved it. When we got married we moved to another county which is lovely but there is a lot of focus on property values, location, schools and cleaners! Tbh I think its probably the same in most places.

Delphiniumum · 29/05/2018 18:28

I was raised in Surrey. I now live in North London.

My memories of Surrey include a lot of drug-taking, drug dealers, prostitution, smoking school kids etc.

It really depends on the area but, imo more importantly, the circles you move in.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 29/05/2018 18:39

I live in Surrey, there are undoubtedly pockets of smugness but it's the same everywhere. I love it here, 10 minutes walk I can be in the countryside, 35 minutes on the train to London, 40 mins in the car to the coast.

DSHathawayGivesMeFannyGallops · 29/05/2018 18:58

I live the London end of Surrey and have done since I was 2. I want to move to Guildford as I love it there and miss working there, although my social life is quite London based so in a pickle atm but want to stay. I like how quickly Ican be in town or out in the semi-country.

There's a mix of rich & poor like everywhere else and I wouldn't say it's a friendly county overall although I have some great mates. There's a lot of footballers wives and new money as well as people with the same issues and problems as everywhere else and plenty of ordinary people too, some nice, some not, some loaded, some broke. Not everyone with money is automatically a wanker

BettyBeer · 29/05/2018 19:09

To a PP who asked - I grew up in a village between Guildford and Leatherhead, don't want to be too specific!

My partner has an accent and was taken the piss out of quite openly by friends and family who live there. They seem to think it's okay to do that, I like that Brighton is more accepting of diversity.

I didn't say it wasn't beautiful, I have fond memories of Shere and Peaslake for example. I just hate the whole keeping up with the Jones' rubbish.

ForalltheSaints · 29/05/2018 19:12

I think there are a lot of generalisations on this thread. My main in fact possibly only objection to people in Surrey is the number who vote for Michael Gove.

Amanduh · 29/05/2018 19:14

Yes, the WHOLE of Surrey Hmm

MuvaWifey77 · 29/05/2018 19:15

I live in Surrey . If you don’t like it or don’t live here ... then hate as you wish ... doesn’t make any difference to us.. 🤷‍♀️

SadieHH · 29/05/2018 19:18

Ah, I see. Ah well there's your problem. We don't have people with accents in Surrey...

Except for our area which is full of Filipino, Polish, Italian, Spanish, Irish, Sri Lankan, American, Australian, Kiwi, Colombian, South African, German, French, and other nationalities which I've forgotten. Our coffee mornings are like the United Nations and I bloody love it. And we never talk about house prices or schools beyond what daft half term projects the parents kids have got. And there are plenty of other Surrey towns like this.

As I've already said, your problem is with the twats you knew, not Surrey as a whole. But carry on...

MiniAlphaBravo · 29/05/2018 19:25

I didn’t like living in surrey either. Felt poor, even though we weren’t really. So much traffic and the town we were in was so boring. All clothes shops aimed at rich middle class women and restaurants all Italian chains. No events were ever put on and people weren’t very friendly. Or at least that was my experience.

There is some very pretty countryside.
