To think that people have no right to prevent others parking outside their house

We live on a road which sometimes has non-resident vehicles parking.

If these are large vehicles it restricts the view from some houses but it's a public road.

My neighbour has taken to parking opposite his house in order to prevent others doing so, and leaves his drive empty.

Is it me or is this just a really twattish thing to do?

All that happens is there's less spaces available for everyone else and his drive stays empty.

Others park like twats due to the lack of space so the vicious circle continues.

Yes personally I agree it’s twattish although a number of my perfectly lovely neighbours do the same thing. I think they’ve just got a lot of time on their hands to (a) get worked up about their view being compromised and (b) to leap out the house and move their car as soon as their favoured space becomes free. It took us a few weeks after moving in to understand the rules about where we could and couldn’t park to avoid their wrath

Hmm. I want to say YANBU but your post is a bit hypocritical as if everyone can park on the road then so can your neighbour iyswim.

I know what you’re saying though.

I never park on my drive as it’s super narrow and steep and there’s stacks of parking on my road so it’s not a problem.

If anyone parks outside my house it’s not an issue. Saying that, a few years ago a lorry took to parking right outside my house which annoyed me after a while. It was daily for months and it blocked out the light from my front room. It disappeared eventually though.

So, I’m on the fence a bit. I get why you’re annoyed but also, if I was your neighbour I’d hate to have a large can type thing blocking out the light day in day out.

If people have drives why on earth they parking on the street?

But the point is my neighbour parks on the road with the sole intention of preventing others doing so, and leaves his perfectly good drive empty, thus worsening the problem.

My neighbour parks in the resident permit section when she owns a private car park - keeps it empty and locked. Nuts.

I'm torn! We had a neighbour who had teens and one battered van left outside our house for days on end! Lots of room for him to park closer to his own house but always left it 5 doors down at ours

He's as entitled to park on the road as you are.

That is massively selfish. I have in the past saved a spot on the road if I knew I had a big delivery or elderly relative coming (so they wouldn't need to walk) but no way would I do it regularly.

Yanbu. We have a drive big enough for 1 car so one of us parks on the road. At the moment dh's car is off the road with a flat tyres so my, bigger/higher, car is parked on the road. The best place due to other people's driveways and an access road opposite my drive is outside my neighbours bungalow.

The lady who lives there had a friend come round to ask me not to park outside her bedroom window as she likes to keep the space for her visitors and nurses who visit daily. I deliberately don't park in front of her lounge window as it's too close to a corner, and tbh I know she likes to look out of it as we've seen her sitting in a chair there mosh School days so it really would feel mean.

She has an unused driveway accessed off a road which is the turn before both our houses. I didn't realise this at the time so just said it was the best place to park but I'd try not to do it all the time.

I'm thinking of asking if it's a problem for us to park on the road whether she would mind if I parked on her drive. The short walk to our house wouldn't bother me.

I'm sure most of us park on the road at times but it's because we have visitors, so our drive is still full.

It's the parking on the road and leaving the drive empty that winds me up.

Our neighbour does this occasionally, but I think it's because it people park opposite her drive, she can't actually get her car out.

There was a neighbour who lived opposite my parents, who used to put traffic cones in the area of road at the front of his house to try to prevent anyone else from parking there. This is on a road in which no one has a drive or a garage.

Admittedly, parking there is a huge problem, as most of the households have 2 or 3 cars, or 1 or 2 cars and a work van. But seriously, to put cones outside your house, get a fucking grip!

Someone stopped their car in the middle of the road once, and got out and removed the cones and parked there. The neighbour ran out of his house (he was ‘reserving’ the place for his wife), and started shouting and swearing at the guy who’d parked there. It was Summer and our window was open and I could hear every word. The guy grabbed hold of one of the cones and threw it behind him into the road, and a car ran it over and crushed it before my neighbour could rescue it. It was very lucky it didn’t hit the car. That person jumped out of their car and started shouting and swearing at the ‘cone thrower,’ and my neighbour was still shouting and swearing at him for throwing his cone and getting it run over!

My neighbour then started chasing the ‘cone thrower’ down the street with one of the cones, shouting ‘oi you prick, I’ll smash your fucking face in’). Then the sound of cars honking their horns began, as the car in the middle of the road was blocking traffic in both directions. This was followed by lots more shouting and swearing from everyone in their cars, and lots of fuss with reversing and pulling over.

My neighbour ambled back with his cone a few minutes later. His face was blood red. He didn’t take any form of revenge on the car.

I noticed the guy collect his car later, and his face hadn’t been ‘smashed in.’

It was a very entertaining spectacle!

We have a drive big enough for 2 cars and park one on the drive and one over our drive otherwise some tosser will just park over our driveway so we can't get on and off so I completely understand! We don't park where someone else could legally park though so we're not inconveniencing anyone else which annoys me as we're courtious to other people on our street but no-one else is to us in return!
