To buy a house with one toilet

Is this a bad idea?

The only toilet is in the bathroom. It's a two bed house. Would this get annoying?

We manage, even with teenagers in the house. It's never been a problem.

I'm not sure it's about.. 'managing' though... OP has certain criteria in her new home.. one being.. a downstairs toilet.. Flowers

Where did she say that? Confused

according to another thread right now, it doesn't matter if you only have one loo.

just piss in the corner, it's fine.

MunchMunch · 28/05/2018 12:31

The house I grew up in had 2 toilets as does the house I live in now (same style house). One was in the bathroom upstairs and the other was in the wash house (brick building attached to house where people used to do laundry and keep their coal, so the wash house toilet was probably the original outside toilet from the 1950's but modernised years later. Also the downstairs toilet had no hand washing facilities apart from the sink in the kitchen which you'd have to walk through to get to the wash house.

The house I'm in now, we knocked down the wash house and made a downstairs bedroom with en suite so it isn't just a toilet anymore.

We've only got one loo. Me and 2 teen DS. We're renting, and I didn't have a lot of choice when I was looking for a house. I don't think I'd buy a house with no downstairs loo as it's pretty annoying.

AuntJobiska · 28/05/2018 12:49

We had one loo between three in our last flat, which we moved out of two years ago. Generally it was fine, we were on one floor and there was rarely a clash between desperate needs! Downstairs loo becomes more important when you have regular elderly visitors (e.g. older parents). My MIL visits quite often, and she would find it really, really hard to cope with the stairs to get to the middle floor bathroom here if we didn't have a downstairs loo.

SoyDora · 28/05/2018 12:53

I’m sure if we only had one we’d manage. We’d have to! I prefer having more than one though.

DropZoneOne · 28/05/2018 12:55

We've only got one toilet, in the bathroom. Two adults, one child. 99% of the time it's fine. Only issue is when DH decides to take 45 mins to poo and shower (why do men do that?)

BackforGood · 28/05/2018 16:21

I can't ever imagine a need for anymore than two loos. I mean like how often will it be really that both loos will be 'in service' whilst someone else is waiting?
Quite often in this house, but we have teens who have showers that last 20mins plus Wink

No, but seriously, it depends where you are in life, like most things. If I were buying a new house now, then I'd have all sorts of things on my list - yes, including a downstairs toilet, yes, including at least 2 bathrooms, yes, I'd want detached, yes, I'd want parking for 3 or 4 cars - but , when I was at the stage of life when I was buying a 2 bedroomed home, then you expect the rest of the house / flat / maisonette to be 'in proportion'.... so that might mean no garden, or no garage, or no parking, and almost certainly no utility room, no second living room, and no study, and no second bathroom, or toilet.

You can transfer the same logic to what you spend on a holiday or a car or probably many other things - what you'd expect if you are paying out £500 is going to be different from what you would expect if paying out £10 000.

Most people would agree a 2nd toilet is nice, but not essential, nor expected in a small / first home.

My 4 and 2 year olds always, without fail, are desperate for a wee at the same time! Often while DH is also on the toilet.
Our third toilet is mainly used for guests, which we have fairly frequently.

Kaykay06 · 28/05/2018 16:32

Is there room to add another one?
Not sure if it’s a 2 bed why you need more than one but if you’re used to more it takes adjustment.

My circumstances changed recently and my family and I became homeless so going from a lovely new build 4 bed with 3 toilets to a tiny 3 bed with one with 4 kids (single parent) has been interesting but I don’t miss cleaning 3 bathrooms. I do miss my nice house but it’s relative. Hopefully you’ll find a solution SmileGrin
