To buy a house with one toilet

Is this a bad idea?

The only toilet is in the bathroom. It's a two bed house. Would this get annoying?

We have a 3 bed house, 1 toilet. It’s in a separate room to the bathroom though so that helps.

New builds have far too many toilets. My friend lives in a smallish 3 bed new build, it has 3 toilets, 1 downstairs, 1 in en suite and 1 in bathroom. Honestly she would rather have bigger rooms than multiple toilets to clean.

Oysterbabe · 27/05/2018 17:10

I'm not sure it's been raised yet Wink but how many people?
We have a 4 bed and 3 loos, a downstairs one, one in the main bathroom and an ensuite off the master bedroom. I have a baby and a toddler. The toddler is about to start toilet training so I'm glad we have the downstairs one. I also think it's nicer for guests rather than having to go upstairs.

Grasslands · 27/05/2018 17:10

I’m pleased to hear the toilet is in the bathroom, as opposed to the living/dining/study/kitchen/or bedroom....

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/05/2018 17:12

How many people in the house?!

jimijack · 27/05/2018 17:13

Abject poverty Grin

BackforGood · 27/05/2018 17:14

Another who is completely Confused as to why this is even a question.

OP are you going to ever answer the question about how many people ? (Although I suspect , due to you even questioning if it is ok to only have one toilet in a relatively small house, you presumably aren't talking about 10 people living in these 2 bedrooms ??)

sweeneytoddsrazor · 27/05/2018 17:14

The toddler is about to start toilet training so I'm glad we have the downstairs one. I also think it's nicer for guests rather than having to go upstairs.

I get it for toilet training but as a guest I would hate going in a downstairs loo because I always worry I might be heard peeing

Norma27 · 27/05/2018 17:14

There are 4 of us and we just about manage with one toilet. We only have a downstairs bathroom too so nothing upstairs at all for night times.

Ofthread · 27/05/2018 17:15

No toilet: YABU
Toilet: Knock yourself out

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 27/05/2018 17:17

Depends on many things, is the house perfect in many others ways? Size, location etc? How many people are in your family?

One toilet is ok really. Many people cope. I have 3 three though so probably not the best person to answer.

LizzieSiddal · 27/05/2018 17:18

I don’t think anyone’s asked yet....

*How many people?”

We downsized from a 4 bed house with 3 toilets, to a 2 bed house with 3 toilets.

While it may seem overly generous to have that many toilets, with a teenage DD, a severe IBS sufferer and a husband who has to take the available option, it’s been an absolute godsend!

When reviewing options before moving, we’d decided we couldn’t manage with just one toilet. Finding a (new build) house with downstairs toilet, main bathroom plus ensuite was a huge relief.

Battleax · 27/05/2018 17:19

OP doesn’t want to talk to us about her loos anymore Sad

KlutzyDraconequus · 27/05/2018 17:24

maybe OP has gone Toodaloo?..

Scrowy · 27/05/2018 17:25

5 bedroom house here.

We only have one toilet in the house (which is in the only bathroom) which is upstairs.

Two of the bedrooms have to go down one set of stairs and up another set to get to it - long way in the middle of the night.

I wish we had another one inside but we don't and essentially we manage. It's rented and listed so nothing we can do about it.

There is a toilet outside as well which does get used most days, but mainly by men so it's disgusting.

AskAuntLydia · 27/05/2018 17:26

If I had as many loos as the average MNer claims to have, I would have to spend most of my time in the loos in order to get my money's worth.

Knittedfairies · 27/05/2018 17:31

There is a new-build opposite us. The house owner told me she has three toilets in her three bedroomed house - and nowhere to put the vacuum cleaner or a broom, unless they live in the downstairs loo.

Anewme2018 · 27/05/2018 17:40

It should be and there is no reason you can’t make do with only one toilet. I’m greatful for two, only because DH really hogs the toilet,he sets up office, playing games on his phone, in there. So it could be a real nightmare for me, if I only had the one toilet lol.

wovendeckchair · 27/05/2018 17:42

i bought a house with one loo about 9 years ago. it worked fine until one of us developed health issues, then it was tricky and stressful. we extended and in the process, got ourselves a nice loo.

we have now moved and have 4 toilets, its bliss. i'm in charge of the guest loo and ensuite, dh caretakes the other two.

Narya · 27/05/2018 17:43

DP and lived on a house with only one toilet a few years back. Fine until we both got norovirus...

BackforGood · 27/05/2018 17:43

maybe OP has gone Toodaloo?..

onalongsabbatical · 27/05/2018 17:49

What exactly is the point of starting a thread asking if it’s ok to buy a house with one toilet, and then not answer the perfectly reasonable question as to how many people this toilet is for? Because the answer, OP, is that if there’s two of you it’s probably fine, if there’s eleventy billion you’re in for a shitstorm, and anything in between we NEED THE FACTS!

Blizzardagain · 27/05/2018 17:49

I've never seen a two bed house with two toilets. Seems a waste of space when the living space down stairs isn't huge I assume. It's fine OP

AlonsosLeftPinky · 27/05/2018 17:55

2 of us in our house with 1 toilet, in the bathroom.

I couldn't really imagine needing another.

Smidge001 · 27/05/2018 17:58

3 people, 1 toilet.
Never been a problem, even when guest come over.
