To buy a house with one toilet

Is this a bad idea?

The only toilet is in the bathroom. It's a two bed house. Would this get annoying?

We have three loos, one downstairs, one in our en suite, one in family bathroom, me DH and DS’ at home.

JacquesHammer · 27/05/2018 16:22

Absolutely not. Couldn’t be doing with a rota for bathroom space.

robotcartrainhat · 27/05/2018 16:23

Think its a luxury to have 2 loos lol!! Id love a downstairs loo. We have 3 bedrooms and theres 3 (soon to be 4) of us...
Think just weight it up... if its a lovely house despite that its not really too much of a hassle... we manage fine and I think it is pretty normal that people dont have extra toilets, especially in older buildings.

bridgetreilly · 27/05/2018 16:25

Only one toilet to clean.

SimonBridges · 27/05/2018 16:29

I’ve lived in loads of houses and the one I currently live in is the first with two toilets.

It’s perfectly normal.

OrcinusOrca · 27/05/2018 16:33

Perfectly fine. Our first house was a two bed with one loo and it was upstairs in the bathroom. Now we live in a four bed which has one upstairs and a downstairs bathroom (Victorian cottage).

OhWotIsItThisTime · 27/05/2018 16:33

My parents live in a three bed with one loo. I didn’t know any different growing up but hated it as my dad was a martyr to his shits. Not being able to shower/brush my teeth before school because he’s settled in for a session was a bloody nightmare.

Now it’s awkward when we stay there. They encourage my kids to piss in the garden, which I hate. You can’t get in the shower and have to check who needs a shit before you do.

I’ve got two bogs and life is much easier.

Gemini69 · 27/05/2018 16:34

if the only toilet is upstairs then I wouldn't buy it OP... Flowers

gillybeanz · 27/05/2018 16:34

I don't know how many you expect in a two bed, where would you put another?
Would there even be room downstairs? I suppose you could lose some of your kitchen, but I think you need 2 doors between kitchen and toilet.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 27/05/2018 16:35

It's not an unusual set up - would there be anywhere you could put a second loo in if you wanted to? Under the stairs, for e.g.?

I infinitely prefer living in a house with 2 loos, even if one of them is outside (my parents house) - but my current home has only one. There are 4 of us living here and it mostly is ok but just sometimes it isn't. The boys can all pee outdoors if they need to though (private and wild garden) but I can't. I'd still like to get a second loo in.

gillybeanz · 27/05/2018 16:35

maybe separate the loo from the rest of the bathroom, at least you can go when you need to then.

MrsHathaway · 27/05/2018 16:38

My parents have four toilets between the two of them ... but they do have a cleaner Grin

I wouldn't want to live in a one-toilet household again tbh. Bad enough when we're away in a one-toilet hotel room. One person can wait but it's pretty miserable when all five are bursting or one person is poorly... especially if it's the poorly person having to wait!

Having said that, toilets aren't very difficult to add later on, and a single toilet which is separate from the bathroom is much better than a single toilet in the bathroom. If you're choosing between houses and can get a better area or big garden or extra bedroom by sacrificing a toilet then it's very tempting.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 27/05/2018 16:38

Ah! I think some of you would love the 2-bed I did last week!

A shower room with loo on the ground floor. Family bathroom, loo and shower over bath. And tha slightly larger bedroom had an En SUite shower room, with loo!

Not a student house, a new build on a newish estate of small 2-3 bed family homes, all of which have more loos than bedrooms Smile

AnnaMagnani · 27/05/2018 16:39

I've never lived in a house with more than one toilet.

Actually that's a lie - when we moved into our house as a child it had 2 as it still had the outside loo. A strange place painted purple and full of spiders.

I don't recommend you put in one of those.

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 16:39

I grew up in a house with 1 toilet and 5 occupants, I escaped unscathed. I would imagine it's standard for most 2 beds to only have 1 toilet. I have a 2 bed and I've no idea where I would fit another toilet.

ScrubTheDecks · 27/05/2018 16:39

OP do you mean only one toilet and that toilet is downstairs?

One toilet in a two bed house: fine.
One toilet and it is downstairs: much less convenient. Kids in tne night, when you are ill, etc.

Sparkletastic · 27/05/2018 16:40

I can't share a toilet with DH as he's a stranger to bleach and flushing twice when necessary.

wellwhatisit · 27/05/2018 16:41

The toilet is in the bathroom upstairs

OP posts:
ShowOfHands · 27/05/2018 16:41

We live in a 3 bed with one toilet for two adults and two DC. We battle through the adversity somehow...

We are planning a downstairs extension to house a 2nd toilet but only because my Dad and aunt and DH's Grandma are all disabled and can no longer do stairs so can't visit for long.

Singlenotsingle · 27/05/2018 16:41

Need a downstairs toilet!

Dobbythesockelf · 27/05/2018 16:42

My 2 bed house the bathroom is downstairs, pretty standard in old terrace house round here. No space for it upstairs unless you make the 2nd bedroom a box room. Maybe that's why it hasn't sold yet. Its brilliant with a potty training toddler btw

ShowOfHands · 27/05/2018 16:43

In our first two houses, we had one toilet and it was downstairs. Again, somehow, we coped with this.

starzig · 27/05/2018 16:43

Gosh......the horror. Only 1 toilet!!!!! Confused

MrsHathaway · 27/05/2018 16:43

Is there a sink in with it? I think it's probably fine.

Much harder to add a bathroom upstairs than downstairs, later on.

SoyDora · 27/05/2018 16:44

How many of you are there?
We have 4 people (2 adults and pre schoolers) and 3 toilets. It has been known for them all to be in use at the same time! When my 4 and 2 year olds decide they want to go, they want to go!
