To tell DH he is pronouncing DD’s name wrong.

DD is mainly known as a shortening of her name. Occasionally we call her the full versio. However I have noticed DH pronounces it in a different way to how I have ever heard it pronounced. I assumed there was just one pronunciation of it. I’m wondering if it would be reasonable to point it out? Or do I just live with it.

I think.

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 12:59

For William I favour Will-eye-am, like him off of The Voice Wink.

wowlookatyou credit to you for admitting that you didn’t realise about Beatrix Potter 😀. There’s a film about her starring Kate Winslet, it’s quite a nice gentle watch.

To the PP who mentioned that in the West Country people say “Margret” instead of Mar-ga-ret” it could be worse...in Scotland a lot of people say “Magret”! (There’s a good example in the Stoneybridge sketches on Absolutely, if anyone remembers those)

Solo · 27/05/2018 13:00

Okay, I've looked it up and it's not Keeva.

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 13:01

Never mind the “I” in the middle of your DD’s name, I really hope your surname doesn’t start with a vowel as I can’t stand when people put in a random “r” -see every English sports presenter who ever talked about “JessicaR Ennis”, grrr.

Solo · 27/05/2018 13:01

My mum says Joshuer for my Ds's name and it bugs me. I corrected her once but, decided to let it drop; it's not worth arguing.

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 13:02

JessieMcJessie Renee Zellweger

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 13:02

There’s a good episode of Friends with a running gag about how to pronounce “Joshua” Solo.

whatislionshare · 27/05/2018 13:03

Thing is he can speak how he likes but if you don't want her to start calling herself Jess-ca then maybe you should correct him.

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 13:04

Ah yes, Middle Class I was a bit confused there for a minute wondering what I’d said about the pronounciation of “Renee” but of course you’re right it was her not KW who played Miss Potter Blush.

MikeUniformMike · 27/05/2018 13:05

Don't most sportwomen have names starting with R?
Jessica Rennis-Hill
Nicola Radams etc.

JessieMcJessie · 27/05/2018 13:06

Grin Mike.

DuchessOfNorfolk · 27/05/2018 13:09

BreakfastAtSquiffanys I pronounce it with an uh as well. Mostly we call her Jessie so it’s not that bigger deal but he has been called her JessCa more offen recently.

bobtailbunny · 27/05/2018 13:11

This reminds me of the Harry Enfield sketch when The Slobs have a baby girl and when asked her name he says "Spud-u-like-a, and Waynetta says "no, it's Spud-oooo-lik-a, it's exotic!"

bobtailbunny · 27/05/2018 13:13

Just seen the update, OP your DH is definitely saying it wrong!

InfiniteCurve · 27/05/2018 13:14

Do say Will-e-am? Really?Well I'm blowed.

Branleuse · 27/05/2018 13:15

I pronounce all my kids names differently to how dp pronounces them because of our accents. Ive never thought to correct him, nor him me.

As long as the person knows who you mean and isnt offended by it I dont see theproblem

derxa · 27/05/2018 13:15

The i in Jessica is an unstressed vowel so it's not that important. It's not as if he's calling her Jessamy or Jessalyn.

ReanimatedMuse · 27/05/2018 13:16

There's some true-blue raging snobbery on this thread

EveningHare I assume that was directed at me for referencing "upper class southern accents". After a poster called my pronunciation lazy Grin

SickofPeterRabbit · 27/05/2018 13:23

The pronunciation of 'room' by southerners makes me cringe!! There's no U in it!!!!!

Solo · 27/05/2018 13:25

JessieMcJessie I will have to look that up :)

MiddleClassProblem · 27/05/2018 13:26

Southerners? Pronounce room with a u? Fuck off, we don’t! At least none where I live... room like boom

SimonBridges · 27/05/2018 13:35

I've just never heard Eleanor pronounced without an R at the end

I say Ell a nu. There you go. But I’m southern English so door rhymes was caw, for example.

Only posh southerners would say rum for room. There is no point in cringing, it’s different accents. None are wrong or right.

BlueTrousers · 27/05/2018 13:39

This thread has just made me realise that DP drops the middle syllable from DS1s name too
It still sounds like the actual name though so I just can’t get worked up about it

EastMidsMummy · 27/05/2018 13:42

This thread is so snobby, insular, bigoted and ill-informed.

Different people from different classes and different regions pronounce things differently. The idea that Will-i-am is “incorrect” and Will-yum is “correct” (or vice versa) is ludicrous.

happypoobum · 27/05/2018 13:46

Ell a nu?

Never heard an u at the end of it before!!

Eleanor would have an r at the end of it (posh southerner)

Elena would be pronounced Ell eh nah
