DH has three dcs from before our relationship, we have 1 dd together. She is 8mo. DH works long hours so she spends the majority of her time with me. I feel selfish and horrible but I'm angry she hasn't said mama first. She is constantly shouting dada. She can also say hiya and wave. I'm gutted. We won't be having any more children.
What did your dcs say first?

It sucks, but as everyone has said, dada is easier to say. A bit weird to be angry about it.

Justanewname · 26/05/2018 20:06

You think you have problems? I have a nearly one and a half year old. If you point to a ball and ask what’s that she will say ‘ball!’ And look pleased with herself. Point to me and she has no idea. She’s been able to say mama for months but doesn’t seem to know it’s me.

steff13 · 26/05/2018 20:07

Oh, and #1 soon and the girl one both had the same first word - uh oh. #2 son's first word was duck ("guck").

Abetes · 26/05/2018 20:08

Dd - first word was dada
Ds - first word was dog
Me - first word was flower
Really don’t be offended. As others have said, you will really wish that she hadn’t ever learned the word Mama in a years time.

Storminateapot · 26/05/2018 20:08

My eldest said Mumumum first. With the twins one's first word was 'Dada' and the other (who was very speech delayed) said 'bat' (thank Scooby Doo for that one!).

Don't be angry, it's just sounds. On the days when she's driving you up the wall with incessant 'mummy, mummy, mummy, mummy' you'll regret she ever knew the word and be vowing to change your name Grin

Namethatchange · 26/05/2018 20:09

Car then dog, duck, fish etc finally MAAAAAAAM for some reason its always shouted and really drawn out. I wish DS hadn't learnt it to be honest Grin

Ivorbig1 · 26/05/2018 20:09

My dc said ball first!
Being angry is dotty, there will shit tonnes of things to get angry over in no time.
Here is a short list of mine today
Had a shower, dc had been in before my a taken the towel.
Took my hair brush
Took my lotion
Never lets me choose what’s on tv.
Has gone and left me the washing up!

olivesnutsandcheese · 26/05/2018 20:11

Seriously let it go. Soon your DC will only say Mama or mummy and you will be sick of the sound of it and consider changing your name.
It will be literally "mummy, mummy mummmmmeeeee mummmmmeeeee" all day long. Enjoy 'dada' while you can Wink

steff13 · 26/05/2018 20:12

She’s been able to say mama for months but doesn’t seem to know it’s me.

My eldest son called my husband "mommy," for a while. It lead to a very awkward shopping trip once where I thought I might be accused of kidnapping because he started yelling "I want my mommy," in the middle of the grocery store.

FlyingElbows · 26/05/2018 20:12

If you try it yourself you'll see the "duh" sound is easier to make than "muh". It's nothing personal, op.

IHeartKingThistle · 26/05/2018 20:13

It was a calendar YEAR between DD saying Dada and saying Mama. I was not impressed.

But then, I figured, I was always there. Daddy got the big welcome when he came in from work. I swear DD just thought I was one of her limbs or something.

OhMyMirror · 26/05/2018 20:13

Ds1 referred to me as "her" for 2 years. His first word was "dog" so I'm glad he didn't call me that 😂 Ds2 and Dd both said "Dada" first.

Whyohwhy65 · 26/05/2018 20:13

Sorry for overreacting. Like I said I know I'm being unreasonable. But this was my only chance for my baby to call for me first and I didn't get it. I suppose i'm just being an idiot and getting emotional because I'm due to go back to work soon Sad
And it's seems the majority of babies shout dada first anyway

Passmethecrisps · 26/05/2018 20:14

My first dd’s First word was meow. She used to use it with feeling and intonation.

Little baby dd now is 11 months old and chants dadadadadadadadadada over and over. I don’t think she has any clue what it means - it’s just a sound. She also says mumumumumum but I think she means food.

Try not to take it personally

aliasjoey · 26/05/2018 20:14

DDs first word was ‘cat’

Her second word was Tabby - the cats name.

Mama / dada were fairly low down on her list of priorities.

RainbowFairiesHaveNoPlot · 26/05/2018 20:15

DS said 'Captain America' before he said either mummy or daddy. He has a weird speech delay though.

The duh sound comes earlier than muh - it's nothing personal.

DD1 did dada, followed by mama, followed by never shutting up for the subsequent 6 years so far (she talks in her sleep to keep up her un-shushed streak)
DD2... "sisda" followed by "leggigo" (let it go). Her sister may have been going through THE Elsa phase at that point. She also had a speech delay though and even now can't articulate some speech sounds correctly.

It's OK - when they learn "no" it's all you hear for about the following 2 years anyway so all the other stuff is irrelevant!

BlueAnchor · 26/05/2018 20:16

One of mine said 'baa aaad' first...not sure what that says....oh on second thoughts I so do!

TitZillas · 26/05/2018 20:17

My eldest said ‘dog’ first too - I thought it was funny, I wasn’t angry about it!
Now I wish she couldn’t say “mummmmmmmmm” as I hear it all bloody day (she’s 9!)

WittyJack · 26/05/2018 20:17

My DD said "yes" at about 7 months. We thought she was going to be a genius.

That was then all we got for months!!

She said daddy long before mummy, even though DP made up all sorts of silly songs to get her to say M. I think it's just a hard sound for them to make, whereas sounds like D and B are much easier.

cornishstripes · 26/05/2018 20:20

Feel good about it - she doesn’t need to say mama as you’re right there! My 2 dc’s first words were ‘duck’ and the cat’s name :)

onalongsabbatical · 26/05/2018 20:20

First word was duck (ha ha coulda been worse!). Seriously, OP, chill out or parenting is going to break you. Take nothing personally.

Marcipex · 26/05/2018 20:22

It was 'dog' in our house too. DN said 'car' first.

Honestly, don't take it to heart.

Esspee · 26/05/2018 20:23

I taught my two to say dada. I never used the word mama at all. When they were demanding attention they called on dada. Job done! Grin

moita · 26/05/2018 20:23

DS's favourite word is dada....and biscuit Blush

andthislittlepiggywent1 · 26/05/2018 20:24

"Mama" was first, but I've been a single mum from the first so DD had never even heard "dada" or "daddy". A friend's DC was another one who said "Peppa" first. Another friend's firstborn DS had "bugger" as his first word (probably a coincidence as they're not majorly sweary people, but still funny).
