Vapers, dog owners and breastfeeders are all offensive in public

Anyone else listening to radio two? I'm not the mortally offended type but I'm pretty astounded at what I've heard

But I've seen women breastfeed then the baby lets go and she just sits there with a bare boob casually hanging out for ten minutes. Totally unnecessary and inconsiderate.

Oh yes, the parallel universe where this happens. Hmm

And the word discreet should be banned in relation to breast feeding. All it does is make nervous feeders more self conscious.

crunchymint · 25/05/2018 14:19

Wolfie I was kind of too surprised to say anything.

size Saw you earlier showing off your fitness.

DontDrinkDontSmoke · 25/05/2018 14:26

And so is not attempting to be discreet while breastfeeding. I breastfeed in public but I seat myself in a quiet corner and expose only what I need to, then cover up as soon as the baby is finished.

Nothing in the law that gives woman the right to breastfeed in public places mentions being discreet. Great for you that you hide away and are as discreet as can be, but you don’t have to be.

1forAll74 · 25/05/2018 14:35

I think breast feeding in public is ok, but was something that wasn't done in the 70 era when I had my two children, and they were breast fed.
Last week I went into a town, and there was a young woman sitting on a wall, breast feeding her baby, and she also had a small dog on a lead ha ha, but two men walked past, and one said, oh Jesus, just look at those tits,, I would like a bit of those when the baby isn't having them.
I thought it was quite funny, as anything goes these days it seems ! I am an oldie, but try and keep up to date with street life !!!

MumofBoysx2 · 25/05/2018 14:35

I find vaping only slightly less disgusting than smoking - I hate having to walk through a cloud of it. And I have experienced some pretty awful dog owners too, letting their dogs poo everywhere. But how can breastfeeding be put in there amongst that lot? Unless you are talking about the people who don't let people breastfeed on their premises.

Nikephorus · 25/05/2018 14:37

I've run bfeeding groups, bfed 5 of my own for a total of over a decade and lived for 54 years on this earth and I have never seen this.
I've owned a dog for years, lived for nearly 50 years on this earth and never seen a dog bite a person so obviously that doesn't happen either. Oh no, hang on, that sort of logic doesn't actually work because I'm not everywhere at once..... Hmm
Why not just go the whole hog and post 'Liar, liar, pants on fire'?

NotACleverName · 25/05/2018 14:37

The more I think about it, the more it sounds like the start of a terrible joke; a vaper, a dog owner and a breastfeeding mother walk into a bar...

DiddimusStench · 25/05/2018 14:38

That show is not so affectionately known as Dial-A-Bigot in our house.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/05/2018 14:43

There is no great big cloud of smoke with vaping, honest!

And, as I don't vape, breast feed or own a dog, I couldn't give a fuck if anyone does, as long as any inconvenience to me is minimal. Cos, unlike some others here, I don't anticipate anyone else living their lives in constant fear of bothering anyone else in even the slightest manner.

It's called living in a society, not in your own private, portable hermitage!

ICantCopeAnymore · 25/05/2018 14:44

There is no great big cloud of smoke with vaping, honest!

Yes there is.

SomeAreMoreEqualThanOthers · 25/05/2018 14:45

Vaping does my head in. I don't want to breathe in a cloud of candyfloss scented nicotine thank you very much.

Peachydream · 25/05/2018 14:47

I heard it today .....the BF comment did make me Hmm - The caller was trying to be antagonistic and it just came across as dickish. I thought we were past that.

Vape fumes are sickly and horrible- not as bad as fags, but still grim.

However, as a dog owner I am outraged, how dare she! Wink

In all seriousness a few dog owners are inconsiderate- On a run about 3 weeks ago I got taken out by a St Bernard, not on a lead, on the pavement. I can laugh now, but it could have been quite bad, it was a soft landing on the muddy grass verge- but the owner didn't even apologise.

TheBogWitchIsBack · 25/05/2018 14:47

It totally depends on the actual vaping device that is used. Some are built to create huge plumes of vapour.
Some don't produce a lot of vape and are virtually odourless.

ElinorCadwaller · 25/05/2018 14:53

Grin size I'd be sunburned by the time DS was finished -drowning himself- feeding.

My all-time hero is the woman who was ticked off for breastfeeding in a public space...and squirted milk at them

I've been practicing in the shower for nearly two months now and my range is pretty good. Please, please let someone have a go.

Murane · 25/05/2018 14:59

Nothing in the law that gives woman the right to breastfeed in public places mentions being discreet.
It's about respect for others, which is what the thread is about. There are many things that aren't technically illegal but I don't do them in public because I have respect for others. Blasting music on the bus and annoying other passengers for example. Not illegal but disrespectful to others sharing the same space.

My SIL is the one who would sit there for ten minutes with a boob wafting in the breeze after feeding. It wasn't enough to just feed the baby and put it away - everyone also had to see her boob flopping about for an unnecessary extra ten minutes, because she had Rights don't you know! And she didn't even attempt to be respectful of others by choosing an appropriate place, she would sit in full view facing everyone and just whip it out with no concern for anyone else's feelings.

StaplesCorner · 25/05/2018 15:01

The squirting woman lived near me. Loca people were beside themselves with outrage, people whose parents hadn't lived through a war to allow women to defile themselves in public with their bodily fluids sort of thing, that level of outrage.

They're very keen on vaping and dogs though.

StaplesCorner · 25/05/2018 15:02

Flapping and wafting boobs?! Murane - are you related to squirting woman?!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/05/2018 15:03

Yes there is. Oh no there isn't Smile There is no smoke, but many devices give off a big puff of vapour, with or without smell, depending on the vapers choice of liquid.

But there is no smoke!

I don't want to breathe in a cloud of candyfloss scented nicotine thank you very much. I don't like cigarette smoke or perfumes, hair spray or those weird red and pink sweets or bubllegum either. Sometimes you just have to hold your breath for a moment or two!

Oysterbabe · 25/05/2018 15:05

It's all the hiding in corners and crapping on about being discreet that makes people feel that that it's something to be hidden and puts them off. Good on people who feed unselfconsciously rather than trying to wrestle just their nipple free and shove the baby in under their top. If you're offended by a breast you really need to give your head a wobble.

WittyJack · 25/05/2018 15:08

Vaping is rank.

Some dog owners are fucking inconsiderate. Fortunately most aren't.

Anyone who notices anyone else breastfeeding and cares about it is a dick.

Lethaldrizzle · 25/05/2018 15:09

Murane- so I'm guessing as it was your sil, it was a family setting? Seems pretty acceptable to me

WittyJack · 25/05/2018 15:10

Elinor - I don't even need to practice. Or provocation. Mine just go off like enormous fleshy fire hydrants whenever they feel like it Blush

SomeAreMoreEqualThanOthers · 25/05/2018 15:10

I don't like cigarette smoke or perfumes, hair spray or those weird red and pink sweets or bubllegum either. Sometimes you just have to hold your breath for a moment or two!

Sure, but people wearing perfume or hairspray etc aren't actively blowing/wafting it towards you..it IS different..some people who vape will think nothing of blowing out their cloud as you walk right into it (just as some cigarette smokers will too)..but if you smell scent as I walk past it's not because I'm actually directing it at you..it's just an unfortunate consequence of my airflow moving past yours.

SpectacularAardvark · 25/05/2018 15:12

I've always thought that if breastfeeding makes you uncomfortable then there is something wrong with you. I'd find someone creepy who thought like that. Reminds me of the blokes who won't change their daughters' nappies "because she's a girl". Hmm

Dancingtothebeat · 25/05/2018 15:28

I’ve breastfed 3 and didn’t believe it could ever be offensive.

Until I saw a woman strip to her waist in a male geriatric ward to tandem feed a 1yo and a 3yo in a quite transparent and obvious attempt to be able to do a sad face story and get compo. By distressing some extremely elderly, unwell and confused people. Nice. The person in question apparently had form and was known for wheezes like doing it in crematoria etc and was eventually prosecuted for making up false claims about a security guard in a shop assaulting her to stop her BFing.

It does happen but I am entirely convinced it is almost always intentional when it does happen.
