Ring stuck on finger!

turtletime · 24/05/2018 22:33

Earlier this evening I was a fool and rammed on my sister's gorgeous new ring on my middle finger. 5 hours later it is well and truly stuck! We've tried every conceivable method, which has only shredded my finger (do not recommend the dental floss technique) and made my finger swell to about 4 times its natural size. I really want to avoid going to A&E due to embarrassment and inconvenience. AIBU to ask for any methods I may have overlooked.

Are you ok OP?

Mrsemcgregor · 25/05/2018 18:02

I doubt she can hold a phone or type by now...

AQuestionofIntent · 25/05/2018 18:04

Update please!!!!!!

Toast3 · 25/05/2018 18:08

Put your hand in cold (but not freezing) water for about 20 mins..add then put olive oil on - keep your hand upright to stop it swelling again......this has worked for me in the past...good luck 👍

Go to A&E and let the experts have a look - they do this a lot and are good at it. The more you mess around trying to do it yourself, the more it’s likely to swell up and be harder to get off.

TooGood2BeFalse · 25/05/2018 18:12

frantically checking my own rings that I haven't taken off in ages

Hope you are ok OP Flowers

turtletime · 25/05/2018 18:16

Thanks everyone for the concern. Just got finished off at A&E, they weren't really impressed by how long I left it and who can blame them. Physically I'm fine, just really sore. The tool they used scraping over my broken skin was unpleasant to say the least. I'm a bit teary over the response I got from my sister (which I readied myself for) and didn't enjoy being ridiculed by others but that's life there are far worse things going on in the world. I know my sister will apologize in time. I was a fool for leaving it but I couldn't really see the wood from the trees at that point. I really wanted to try and make it work for my sister who has got me through so much without asking for anything in return. Also, I really appreciate the kindness/advice I got from you all, thank you.

Did you get it cut off then?

TryingToForgeAnewLife · 25/05/2018 18:21

Was it cut off?

ShakeShakeTheMuffin · 25/05/2018 18:21

So pleased you're ok. I assume they cut off the ring?

4GreenApples · 25/05/2018 18:22

Glad to hear that you’ve had it seen to. I hope your finger is feeling better soon Flowers

turtletime · 25/05/2018 18:23

Yes, it is off and far away from me, I'm sick of the sight of it!

Did they recommend any salve or something to put on your finger now? I know your sister is hurt, but her reaction is shocking and I hope she realises in the morning how unreasonable she was being and apologises to you for her reaction. Anyway, glad to hear you're ok now.

ladymelbourne1926 · 25/05/2018 18:57

Ouch, did they have to cut it too badly?
Aloe Vera may soothe your skin but obviously check with the dr before using anything.

Wellfuckmeinbothears · 25/05/2018 19:23

I’m so glad you’re ok, just reading it made me feel panicky so god knows how you felt!

Your sister will come round. It sounds as though she’s someone who loves and supports you and I’m sure in time she’ll just be glad you went to a&e.

This once happened to me in a jewellers, have never been so embarrassed in my life! They managed to get it off after an hour using ice, lube and ribbon but my god it hurt. Almost as much as my pride!

MumsKnitters · 25/05/2018 19:37

Glad to hear you're ok OP! One day you will be able to laugh about this. I hope your sister apologises eventually for her shitty behaviour. If not, I suggest you have look through her jewellery box and do this!

Ring stuck on finger!
gingergiraffe · 25/05/2018 20:08

Too late and of no use now, but this may help someone in the future. I once got a ring stuck, placed it on wrong hand. Went to a&e who did the thread trick. It worked and I have done it since on a lad who did a similar thing.

Use a very strong thread about 50 cm long. Push about 3cm under the ring towards the palm of your hand. Hold short bit with thumb, while wrapping the rest of thread tightly and evenly around your finger, starting closest to the ring.

Take the short end and gradually unwind it. This will gradually push the ring off your finger.DO NOT LET THE THREAD SLIP OUT FROM UNDER THE RING.

You may run out of thread before the ring comes off, in which case simply pull the thread back through the ring to where it was at the start and wind again.

You may reach a worrying moment when you think the ring is stuck, at the knuckle, but keep going. It does work. Try it with a normal finger and ‘easy to remove’ ring.

gingergiraffe · 25/05/2018 20:19

Actually, just watched the video. Same principle. I imagine the dental floss would work better than strong thread as less likely to snap. Needs to be done ASAP though to avoid bad swelling.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 25/05/2018 20:22

Glad you’re OK! When I did at least it wasn’t a valuable ring. It was an accident and I’m sure your sister will realise a ring is not worth more than your health. I hope she can get it repaired though.

GruciusMalfoy · 26/05/2018 06:30

Hopefully in time your sister will gain a bit of perspective. Glad you still have all your fingers!

turtletime · 26/05/2018 09:05

Thank you. I know she definitely will get over it, just need to wait for her infamous "red mist" to lift. It does feel like all I do is take from her so that's why I was so hesitant to get it cut off but I know she would never want any permanent harm to come to me.
