To think 'boys just being boys' is not a good enough response to someone being taped to a chair and gagged?

A woman was taped to a chair and her mouth covered with tape at her workplace and when she raised it with her manager, was told it was probably "the boys just being boys".
Wtf?

What! What kind of work place was it? How old were these "boys"

PiggyPlumPie · 24/05/2018 11:50

No - I am appalled at this and can't believe that it happened in 2010 and the woman involved has been suspended on full pay for the past two years! There is a strong possibility that she might lose her job.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 24/05/2018 11:51

Yes, the line about this never happened but if it did it was just lad bantz wasn't the best chosen really, was it?

PiggyPlumPie · 24/05/2018 11:52

Never happened but there is a photo Hmm

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 24/05/2018 11:54

Speechless. This is alleged to have happened in a Civil Service department. Poor woman.

Waggingmyginger · 24/05/2018 11:54

It's not an acceptable phrase unless you're discussing under 18's doing something such as peeing standing up. Even then you're generalizing and talking out of your rear end.

TufVoyaging · 24/05/2018 11:56

The boys being boys excuse has to stop. This is not banter.

Dahlietta · 24/05/2018 11:57

I agree that 'just boys being boys' isn't a good enough response to anything really.

PaulDacreRimsGeese · 24/05/2018 12:04

Maybe to a question about the Ordinary Boys. Not otherwise.

CloudPop · 24/05/2018 14:26

And one of the protagonists not only still works there, but has recently been promoted.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/05/2018 14:32

Horrific,
in particular that their employer didn't view that photographic evidence and immediately sack the men responsible.

That is a criminal offence, committed by a gang of men against one woman, which happened in the workplace

SweetheartNeckline · 24/05/2018 14:44

It's awful. That poor woman.

Bullying misogynists who deserve to be sacked, and pursued with the full force of the law.

"Banter"? Fuck off.

Eastcoastmost · 24/05/2018 14:57

I saw this story last night. Surely she can bring criminal proceedings against the people who did this? Didn’t they effectively kidnap her? There’s photographic evidence of her being tied up. It’s appalling. I wouldn’t just be looking at an internal investigation, and the bullying stuff, I’d be getting a solicitor quick smart and going the line of GBH or similar.

CalF123 · 24/05/2018 15:26

Disgusting- I'd be looking to bring criminal charges for false inorieonment

Staying · 24/05/2018 15:36

I was appalled at this too. It should only be in the media because we hear about sentencing, not because nothing's been done. It's hard to think of anything other than institutionalised misogyny up to the highest level to explain what's happened.

And I'm betting if they did this with impunity, there's a whole list of other things that happened, only no photos of it. Utterly disgusting.

Mamaryllis · 24/05/2018 15:38

I was once rolled in bubble wrap, taped, and carried round like a roll of carpet. And I do vaguely recall being put in a giant wheel dumpster and towed round. I can’t actually remember why, but I was the only woman on the team and it didn’t happen to anyone else.
I can quite believe this. And quite believe people are dismissing it as bantz. There is a fine line between putting up with a bit of japery to secure team cohesion, and accepting abuse. The woman often has a very different line demarcation, and is absolutely entitled to have her line enforced.

colouringinagain · 24/05/2018 15:43

Totally appalling. I really hope she is able to take legal action against these arseholes.

LighthouseSouth · 24/05/2018 15:51

OMD this is so appalling, how is it that criminal charges weren't brought initially?

Mamaryllis - what did you do? I cannot even start saying how sorry I am that you had that experience.

LighthouseSouth · 24/05/2018 15:51

Mamaryllis - I mean what did you do after, sorry, should have been clearer.

kalapattar · 24/05/2018 16:01

"Boys being boys", "Just bantz", banter, locker talk etc etc

All excuses used to excuse such unbelievable behaviour.

Aeroflotgirl · 24/05/2018 16:03

Who took the photo? No excuse, they are not boys fgs, but grown adult men. It is bullying, there should be zero tolerance of it.

RabbityMcRabbit · 24/05/2018 16:04

Boys will be boys is never a good enough excuse for any behaviour, it just excuses shit behaviour and breeds a climate where any behaviour is accepted. They should lose their jobs for this, and their pensions

Eastcoastmost · 24/05/2018 23:04

Does this remind anyone else of the film North Country with Charlize Theron? She’s the only female miner and they stick her in a portaloo and then chuck it around.

Homemenu1 · 24/05/2018 23:18

There are men not boys, I hate boys will be boys, it turns them into children and absolves them of taking responsibility

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 24/05/2018 23:27

Shocking. The feeble denial from the one who’s left just digs a deeper hole.
