Ouais CNN, NYT and ABC are the first three on my list (followed by wikipedia).

I will be back in the US for my MIL's 91st birthday next week and I am dreading having to set foot on US soil. I just don't want to go there anymore. Sad

I am reading these first-hand accounts of mothers who had their children taken from them, with no word of where they were going or how to contact them, and I'm thinking about someone doing that to me and my kids and I feel a rage so powerful I think I'm gonna pass out.

'Your friendly reminder that President Trump is staying put in Washington this Memorial Day and we are likely in for a looong weekend of tweeting.'
mobile.twitter.com/kaitlancollins/status/1000154203459936256

And he's off:

'Senator Schumer and Obama Administration let phone company ZTE flourish with no security checks. I closed it down then let it reopen with high level security guarantees, change of management and board, must purchase U.S. parts and pay a $1.3 Billion fine. Dems do nothing.'

But as that NBC report says:

'If the administration goes through with this reported deal, President Trump would be helping make China great again. Simply a fine and changing board members would not protect America's economic or national security, and would be a huge victory for President Xi, and a dramatic retreat by President Trump," Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a statement.

And Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., a member of the Intelligence Committee, said this "crushes U.S. companies."

"It is a great deal for ... #ZTE & #China," Rubio tweeted.

A flurry of dire warnings began on Capitol Hill after President Donald Trump tweeted in support of ZTE last week. Both Republicans and Democrats sounded the alarm and backed legislation to put guardrails around the president. Earlier this week, some Republicans even called for an emergency meeting with top administration officials.

“ZTE: Bad, bad," said Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C.'

Hmm Some other 'great deal' is in play, isn't it? Now what was it?

North, I've just listened to Chris Hayes' report, it is heart rendiding. Extract from his show:

So this horror is the 'whatever' Kelly referred to. This scum of the earth has utterly devalued his service and personal loss.

OP posts:
OuaisMaisBon · 26/05/2018 09:32

That Chris Hayes report is horrendous. America is not great at all. I am feeling very sweary about this.

ohmymimi · 26/05/2018 09:34

That was not the 'f' word that I mouthed when I read that Newsweek report lion, Shock

OP posts:
lionheart · 26/05/2018 09:45

No. It wasn't the first word to cross my mind either.

The reports on the abuses, the missing and especially the forced separations add up to a bleak picture of how that Trump rhetoric translates into practise.

Ouais and North, I was thinking, after I listened to Hayes earlier, how, in an innocent ignorance, I loved the US and Israel when I was a child. I wanted to live on a kibbutz, pick oranges, and have all my meals at huge tables surrounded by tanned, happy folk. The GI who was billeted with my Gran during the war sent me fabulous gifts: comics, beautiful books about N.American wildlife/geographical wonders and Disney , sweatshirts, dolls that did stuff no Brit. doll could dream of. I could watch ‘A Tree Grew in Brooklyn’ and ‘She Wore a Yellow Ribbon’ then, because I didn’t know yet know Kazan named names and Wayne was a right wing bigot. The past really is another country.

I've just seen this, it made my day a wee bit better, hope it's not a repeat for you all.

Roussette · 26/05/2018 13:40

Totally agree mini. My view has changed, and I feel so much for all those resisting over in the US.

This child border patrol travesty is beyond words.

Gumpendorf · 26/05/2018 13:55

The child border travesty should ring alarm bells for everyone, everywhere. I'm not seeing it get a huge media coverage atm, but it has to because the next step is what? And what's after that? It's just 🤯🤯🤯

cozietoesie · 26/05/2018 14:01

Good tactics from KJU and Moon. (Albeit, born out of desperation.) Your pushing the process forward means that the optics of attack become too difficult for 45.

ohmymimi · 26/05/2018 14:52

I agree, cozie. And any progress that 45 gets out of any negotiations will be by luck, not design.

It's the complacent non-resisters that bother me, Roussette. I know far too many of them, friends/relatives, the 'comfortably smug', buffered by location/wealth. They 'don't do politics' and their mantra is 'this too shall pass'. They just think this is a temporary abberation; that things will snap back into place and 'normality' will resume.

I seem to recall someone - it may have been Wise - talking about the difference between those who feel 'offended' and those who feel 'affected'. The implication being that those who will actually go out and vote are those who feel affected. (The 'offended' category would not vote for 45 but whether they will actually head out and vote against him is anyone's guess.........

ohmymimi · 26/05/2018 15:25

I don't know what sort of reception Scumbucket got at Annapolis lion, I can't bear to watch him or hear his voice. But, I heard a discussion before the event about showing respect for the office of POTUS, where none is felt for the current incumbent. Not an argument I buy in this case, not for a President of such aberrant and defective character, who infers any mark of respect for the office as a solely conferring glory on his person. As those grads. wrote 'who time and again makes small choices guided by self-interest, ego, impulse and immediate self-gratification, ...... a physical coward, a liar and no leader at all.'

OP posts:
lionheart · 26/05/2018 15:28

Yes, although I did notice some of those who were on the voting drives saying they had registered people in their fifties. These were going to be first time voters.
