To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?

Talking about both the Duchess of Cambridge and the Duchess of Sussex. And ok, I know IABU, but I thought I'd namechange and put it out there to see if other posters agreed. Putting my tin hat on, as I know I'll get lots of criticism for my gossipy thread. Oh well!

Both Catherine and Meghan are beautiful women with naturally lovely figures. But they are both so so extremely thin! Right now Kate is less thin, I assume because of her recent pregnancy and new baby, but no doubt she'll bounce back to her usual skinniness soon.

Kate was nowhere this thin before getting engaged and married into the RF. Meghan has always been very slim, but is now thinner than ever and I bet she won't gain the weight back. I remember even Diana lost loads of weight as soon as she got engaged and married! And she stayed very thin from then onwards.

Why does it seem like extreme thinness is a prerequisite to be a royal wife?

But formerbabe, is there any possibility that a crumpet and raisins WERE enough for her to warrant missing lunch? I 'naturally' regulate my weight in that way - I just don't need or want that much food and I don't like feeling really full. If I have breakfast I often skip lunch, and vice versa. It's really not an act of denial, it's directly in relation to how hungry I feel.

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 24/05/2018 13:01

Thisisthefirststep you’re consistantly putting people into team thin or team fat. What about all the people in between? Which is most of the population.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 13:04

It's hardly normal eating is it?

formerbabe · 24/05/2018 13:05

underestimation

Well yes. Some thin people may say they stay slim whilst eating whatever they want. Obviously that depends on what you want! My definition of eating what I want would be smoked salmon, bagels, pastries for breakfast, nandos for lunch, Chinese takeaway every night followed by boxes of expensive Belgian chocolates. If I ate what I wanted I'd be the size of a house. Maybe those who say they eat what they want, just don't want much!

Sprinklesinmyelbow · 24/05/2018 13:06

Well the crumpet example is only a snapshot into her life, maybe she was going for a 3 course meal in a restaurant later. But I still maintain, many very thin people claim to eat loads and it’s rarely true.

I’m another who can’t eat when stressed so know exactly what that’s like

Xenia · 24/05/2018 13:07

it would be interesting to analyse it historically. Wallis Simpson - other royal who was divorced first before marriage - slim. Diana and Sarah Ferguson - struggled with weight - so clearly wanting to conform to a slim norm and ditto Sophie Wessex i suppose.

William and Harry were not attracted to obese women or even over weight women so that is not particularly surprising and I suppose their spouses were not either the other way round.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 13:08

I'm the opposite stress makes me hungry.Sad

newdocket · 24/05/2018 13:12

They are not 'too thin'. They both look fine and not unhealthy. FFS.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2018 13:13

'Mumsnet is obsessed with weight and thinness!'

And the content of every single food item. Ate two bananas at once? You will get diabetes, become obese and die. Ate a slice of toast and a bowl of cereal for breakfast? Shame on you! It should have been a bowl of kale with a splash of almond milk and a spoonful of fucking spirulina on top.

It's comical.

Oohjuicy · 24/05/2018 13:14

My god i’m so BORED of all the comments about how “we’ve lost sight of a normal healthy size because we’re so fat nowadays”. Nope - watch a sitcom or a tv drama or a movie, and pay attention to how very, very thin the actresses usually are. People like Amy Schumer and Adele are presented as “fat” celebs which is actually insane. Yes, you might know some overweight people but almost all women in the public eye, and thus the media, are very thin. So, in my opinion, that is what people have become desensitised to. A lot of the reason why the average clothes size has gone up is because people tend to be more overweight than previous generations, yes, but people are also much taller now on average.

Oohjuicy · 24/05/2018 13:16

@expatinscotland spot on! I go on food threads just to see all the “too many carbs! Go low carb!” seagulls sqwawking away at the op who dared to have a slice of toast with ther breakfast Grin

AlbertaSimmons · 24/05/2018 13:16

Too thin for what? As others have said, KM has managed to produce three whoppers babies of good weight in short order so she's clearly not "too thin" to do that. She seems to be able to do her job (such as it is) ok, in the sense that we don't hear of her having a sick day, so she's not "too thin" for that. As far as I can gather, she does the school run for her older children, so she's not "too thin" for that.

What is it that she should be doing, or is doing, that she's "too thin" for I wonder? If the people who are saying she's too thin mean that she doesn't fit their personal preferred female aesthetic, then that's something different altogether.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2018 13:19

'My god i’m so BORED of all the comments about how “we’ve lost sight of a normal healthy size because we’re so fat nowadays”. '

It's either that or 'we've lost sight of normal portion sizes'. Rinse and repeat. Tedious in the extreme.

Or 'In the 70s we were all thin.' Yeah, and a lot of us used to smoke, too, a known appetite suppressant.

IreneWinters · 24/05/2018 13:20

I'd never heard of Meghan Markle (autocorrect just changed that to mechanical marble Grin) and i probably wouldn't recognise her if I fell over her even now, but when saw the wedding pictures I was astonished at how wide she looked. I assume it was the cut of the dress, but it was so unflattering.

But in answer to the OP: because, patriarchy.

expatmigrant · 24/05/2018 13:20

They are both slim, healthy and gorgeous.
Good for them, I say!

ThisIsTheFirstStep · 24/05/2018 13:21

I’m not putting anyone into any ‘team’.

Try to stick to the discussion instead of trying to pick on minutae.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 13:21

Anyone remember how Renee Zellwegger gained weight for Bridget Jones? And yet in the by by girl outfit she didn't look overweight she looked normal.

To wonder why both Duchesses are so thin?
GinnyWreckin · 24/05/2018 13:23

Does no one else remember when Fergie put on a few stone she was called the Duchess of Pork?

Not all Duchesses are skeletal!

Fergie has been fat shamed for her entire public life it seems.

He daughters are also criticized for being heavy. To be for their appalling dress sense doesn’t help, as it’s difficult to compliment anyone on how they look if they’re badly dressed. They do seem to opt for the frumpiest and most matronly of outfits that do nothing to highlight their figures.

I think Chelsea and Cressida looked very healthy at the wedding. Cressida’s a dancer so she’s lithely muscular not fat, and Chelsea seems like a normal type of woman not obsessed with looks, who enjoys life and stays fit by doing things she loves, rather than dieting and exercising slavishly.

Meghan has a boxy torso and thin legs. I think she looks underweight because of the strange distribution. She certainly hasn’t a curvy figure. Small rather droopy boobs, no waist, and a flat wide bum, and rather emaciated limbs isn’t the best look, so maybe she keeps herself on the low end of the scale to stop the middle from spreading out too much.
She’d be better off putting on some muscle mass on her arms and legs, toning her waist and to fill out a bit, but, I’m sure she knows all that!

Kate is at the v low end of her BMI ordinarily. I think she looks great when she’s pregnant. I think her weight is nothing to worry about when she’s not. She’s athletic and sporty and has muscle mass and an even distribution of fat.

I think Cressida and Chelsea made a lucky escape.... couldn’t imagine Internet forums discussing them for too long.
I have to admit I’m a bit #TeamChelsea about the whole thing.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 13:23

Bunny girl

StillNoClue · 24/05/2018 13:24

Wills and Harry are fairly slim as well. Maybe it's due to a good diet and the option to exercise.

I think both Kate and Meghan appear naturally slim.

SerenDippitty · 24/05/2018 13:27

The Royals burn up a lot of calories just walking around their vast homes and huge estates.

GinnyWreckin · 24/05/2018 13:31

I agree @IreneWinters. Meghan has a terrible figure.
Very matronly, and a bit middle age spreadish.

She doesn’t look very fertile to me... and that’s her job now in a way.
More spares needed, just in case William abdicates.

Could you imagine how Kate would react if William did abdicate....
who knows, maybe she’d be relieved!

lovetheway · 24/05/2018 13:33

Fuck. Ing. Hell. I don't think I have ever read such a shitty comment about another woman. I really hope it's made you feel better about yourself Angry

BlancheM · 24/05/2018 13:34

Both have lean, athletic figures.
Neither are too thin for their natural frames, otherwise they would look gaunt and unwell in the face.

expatinscotland · 24/05/2018 13:36

'More spares needed, just in case William abdicates.'

Harry's kids won't even be spares, Harry himself is basically like Andrew now, with the possibility of being bumped even further if Will and Kate have another. If William abdicates then his son George will have the throne. And there's nothing stopping Kate from having another baby, she appears to bear children easily.

Of course, Harry and Meghan will soon come up with the requisite boy/girl designer twins just like all the other slebs.
