Overheard a conversation today about how some singers in the charts may have a great voice but aren't really talented because they don't write their own lyrics/melodies.

Made me think, why is this an opinion I've heard a lot but I've not heard the same about violinists or opera singers etc?

AIBU to think it's not fair?

YANBU Its a different talent although it is more impressive when someone writes and sings there own songs.
DH's best friend is a songwriter and has written songs that have appeared in the charts for big singers but he is only a 'good' singer, he wouldnt be as sucessful and he wouldnt make as much money if he was singing them himself, hes talented and the singers her writes for are also talented just at differnent things.

To be honest I’m not bothered, if I like the track and the performer it’s not a dealbreaker if they didn’t write it.

It’s quite rare to find very talented singer songwriters who also have ‘it’ and can perform as well as they write. Or they’d rather write and don’t want to be in the limelight.
