To think it's not fluffy 90s pop, but creepy asf?

So, 'You're Gorgeous" (Babybird) was on the radio today in the car. Naturally, I turned it up.
Was singing along, (dc in back) and it struck me that it's actually a very creepy song and not a happy 90s pop tune.. got me thinking, what other songs that were acceptable back in the day probably wouldn't make the cut today?

The 80s song, 'I touch myself', comes to mind... lol

AIBU Or what other old songs do you think are, in retrospect, creepy asf? 🤔🤣

Aerosmith - Walk This Way has extremely dodgy lyrics. Luckily, you generally can’t hear them...

Oh, and Tom Jones - Delilah, which I was surprised about when I heard the proper version for the first time as it is actually about a murder. And not about breakfast cereal.

shakeyourcaboose · 21/05/2018 22:05

There's a Justin Bieber song l don't like
"What do you mean, ooh
When you nod your head yes
But you wanna say no"

Hateloggingin · 21/05/2018 22:06

Mr. Brightside isn’t about paedophilia! Well, not according to the guy who wrote it!!

ThankYouGillian · 21/05/2018 22:08

The Springsteen one has been discussed before on here, daddy is used to mean partner, it was a recognised term.
And the Roy Orbison one - well I'm pretty certain Cindi Lauper did the original...... puts a different spin on it. Plus, my boyfriend when that song was out did drive through the night to see me, and I looked forward to him arriving, waking me up, and so on Wink The song resonated with me, it wasn't inappropriate at all.

Pebblespony · 21/05/2018 22:09

Baby, it's cold outside.
No means no, dude!!

Fififerry1 · 21/05/2018 22:10

The Bruce Springsteen one totally creeps me out. Always have to turn it off.
There’s a Rod Stewart one ‘Tonight’s the Night’ which is equally disturbing.

BeefyCakes · 21/05/2018 22:10

From Brandon Flowers...

Lyrically, it's about an odd girlfriend of mine. All the emotions in the song are real. When I was writing the lyrics, my wounds from it were still fresh. I am Mr. Brightside! But I think that's the reason the song has persisted - because it's real. People pick up on those things. And that goes all the way down to the production; we recorded it in a couple of hours, but it just sounds right, you know? - Brandon Flowers

dontticklethetoad · 21/05/2018 22:11

Oh yeah pebbles that's super creepy.

Tinkletinklelittlebat · 21/05/2018 22:11

Michael Buble, Just Haven't Met You yet - very much a catchy, happy desperate creeper song

And I know that we can be so amazing
And baby your love is gonna change me
And now I can see every possibility mmm
And somehow I know that it'll all turn up
And you'll make me work so we can work to work it out
And I promise you kid I'll give so much more than I get m-m
I just haven't met you yet

There's a probably a reason for that. And no, no self respecting woman will be happy about her job being to 'make you work' in a relationship, since she isn't your bloody mother.

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 21/05/2018 22:11

Yeah I'm not sure your husband is listening to the same song lol

paisleyblue · 21/05/2018 22:14

How about Queen with Tie Your Mother Down?

Get your party gown
Get your pigtail down
Get your heart beatin' baby
Got my timin' right
Got my act all tight
It's gotta be tonight my little
School babe

Your Mamma says you don't
Your Daddy says you won't
And I'm boilin' up inside
Ain't no way I'm gonna lose out this time - oh no

Basically tie your name down and get your dad out of the house so I can have my wicked way with you - to a school girl Shock I take these lyrics in jest as Freddie was gay

notacooldad · 21/05/2018 22:15

Turning Japanese - Vapours

I want a Dr to take a picture so I can look at you on the inside as well

A bit sick imo

I thought it was quite funny and fits in with the tune!

FrangipaniBlue · 21/05/2018 22:18

Mr Brightside by The Killers because he found out that the track was apparently about paedophilia.

Utter tosh. There are recorded interviews of Brandon Flowers explaining that it was the first song they wrote and it's about him catching an old girlfriend cheating on him.

CauliflowerBalti · 21/05/2018 22:19

There's a big difference between creepy and just hypersexualised. Songs where permission isn't respected are creepy - see Blurred Lines. Songs where men want to lick you up and down until you say stop - well, I'm all good with that. Permission is built in, she's presumably enjoying it - crack on...

73kittycat73 · 21/05/2018 22:19

I always thought he was Bi? Well, you learn something new everyday.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/05/2018 22:20

From an interview with NME in 2012....

"It came from this cassette of ideas that Dave gave me, and one of them was the 'Mr. Brightside' riff. I was able to slap a chorus and some lyrics onto it, and I knew I liked it. But it wasn't until we first tried it out with a drummer that I knew it was special. We went to the guy's house and showed him the song, and I got the goosebumps after that.

Lyrically, it's about an odd girlfriend of mine. All the emotions in the song are real. When I was writing the lyrics, my wounds from it were still fresh. I am Mr. Brightside! But I think that's the reason the song has persisted - because it's real. People pick up on those things. RaininSummer · 21/05/2018 22:20

"Where do you go to my lovely " has always bothered me. Bit stalky.

Was Freddie bi?? He had a lifelong female companion but I always thought he was gay and she knew that

Caribou58 · 21/05/2018 22:22

Don't stand so close to me...ooh, that's BAD.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 21/05/2018 22:23

Is he getting his P’s mixed up? Paranoia, not paedophilia? ConfusedGrin

FrangipaniBlue · 21/05/2018 22:24

Was Freddie bi?? He had a lifelong female companion but I always thought he was gay and she knew that

There was a recentish TV programme on around the anniversary of his death, she was on it talking about his long term (male) partner and then all living together

Caribou58 · 21/05/2018 22:24

'Tie your mother down' was written by Brian May.

FrangipaniBlue · 21/05/2018 22:24

As in he was gay but chose to hide it iyswim

VioletCharlotte · 21/05/2018 22:25

@Grammy78

I never thought of 'Hey there Delilah' as creepy, my interpretation was he was singing to his gf who was away at college ( I'm pretty sure they refer to college as school in America)

I'll keep thinking that anyway, as I like the song!
